Bella's POV

"Where am I going?" I put the phone down on the table. "Is it any of your business?"

Logan's face went dark. He dropped the bag of fruit on the chair.

"Since when did you get this twisted, Bella? You dragged Ruby to a meat grinder. A damn meat grinder! She could have died."

I turned my face to the window.

"I'm talking to you."

I said nothing. My wrists throbbed under the bandages. He didn't even look at them.

Logan sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. "After all the years we've been together, you should trust me. Ruby is like family. Please don't get jealous anymore, okay?"

His phone buzzed. He read the screen, and his whole face changed. He stood up at once.

"I've got something more important to do, so I can't check you out today. Go home yourself."

"Something more important?" I laughed, and it hurt my throat. "Really?"

He was already out the door.

***********

An hour later, a young nurse knocked and came in with a wheelchair.

"Bella, let's go downstairs for some fresh air. It'll do you good."

She pushed me down the long hallway. At the end of it was a big room with a gold sign on the door. VIP Suite. The door was open.

Ruby sat up in a wide bed full of pillows. Her arm had one small bandage on it. Flowers covered every table.

"For you, Mother." Danny handed her a box of chocolates.

"And this one's from me!" Sophia gave her a drawing with a big red heart on it.

Ruby hugged them both. Then she put on a sad face.

"Your mother's always loved you both, you know. Now she's in the hospital too. Are you sure you won't go visit her?"

"She deserved it," Danny said.

"Yeah." Sophia climbed onto the bed. "We like you more than her."

The nurse's hand froze on my wheelchair.

Two other nurses walked past us, whispering.

"Look at that. The woman in that VIP room just got a scratch, but her husband and kids are freaking out."

"They even brought in the best specialists from the city. For a scratch!"

The young nurse bent down beside me. Her eyes were kind and confused. "Excuse me, ma'am. Where is your family?"

I looked through that open door. Logan was fixing Ruby's pillow. My children were laughing on her bed.

"Those people," I said quietly. "They're my family."

********

I took a taxi home alone.

That evening, Ruby came back too. Logan carried her through the front door like a bride. The kids danced around them.

Ruby sat on the sofa and slipped her feet into her house shoes.

Then she screamed.

"Ruby!" Logan dropped to his knees and pulled the shoe off. Three shiny thumbtacks fell onto the floor. A small drop of blood sat on her heel.

He held one tack up in front of my face.

"Thumbtacks. Did you put them there, Bella?"

"No."

"Stop lying!" Danny shouted. "Who else would do it?"

Logan stood up slowly. "Are you getting back at Ruby just because we got her out of that factory first?"

"I said it wasn't me."

"Bella, you didn't hear a word I said at the hospital, did you?" He shook his head. "I am disappointed in you."

"I said it wasn't me," I repeated. "That's all."

"Dad!" Danny grabbed his arm. "How much longer are we gonna let her get away with this? She's gonna kill Mother someday!"

Logan looked at me for a long moment. "Hopeless."

"Throw her out!" Sophia cried. "Don't let her back in until she says what she did!"

Logan opened the front door and pointed at the cold night.

I walked out. The door shut behind me.

I sat down on the porch steps and looked at my bandaged wrists. Years ago, I cut my finger slicing apples for the kids. Just a tiny cut. Logan ran for the first-aid box like the house was on fire. Danny and Sophia cried and kissed my hand.

"Mommy, you're our heart," Sophia had said. "Just stay home and be our queen."

I laughed at them that day. "I'm fine, really. If you took any longer to bandage it, it would have healed on its own."

Now all their trust and all their love belonged to Ruby.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand.

"Logan. Danny. Sophia," I whispered into the dark. "I swear to you, this is the last time I cry for you."

*******

Near midnight, the door opened.

"Up," Logan said.

I stood and walked past him without a word. He followed me to the bedroom and watched me with a frown.

"Since when did you get so cold?" he muttered. He held out a glass of water and two pills. "Here. Take your meds."

"A carrot after the stick?" I didn't reach for them. "I don't need it."

He set the glass down hard. "I asked the staff. They saw Ruby step on the tacks by accident. They fell from the notice board in the hall. Don't be mad at her anymore."

I stared at him. "You threw me out. And now you tell me not to be mad at her?"

"Bella, there's something you don't know." He rubbed his face. "Back when the company was running out of money, Ruby gave up her family heirloom as collateral so we could get the loan. I owe her."

"What?" My breath caught. "She did?"

"Without her, we'd have gone broke. That's a debt I can never repay." He stepped closer. "So I want you to be reasonable. Even after that big mistake you made, I didn't divorce you. You know how much I value our marriage."

"I wish you didn't."

"See? You're still talking out of anger." He touched my cheek. "You are the love of my life, Bella. As long as you behave, I'm not going to divorce you."

I moved his hand away.

"But I am done with you."

His eyes went wide.

Then a scream tore through the house.

"Dad! Hurry! Something's wrong with Mother!"

Logan ran.. Ruby lay on the floor of the guest room, her eyes closed, her body still. Danny shook her shoulders.

"Mother, wake up! Wake up!"

"Mother!" Sophia sobbed.

Logan pushed through them and fell to his knees.

"Ruby!"

Logan's POVI had a terrifying feeling in my chest, like a hand was squeezing my heart and wouldn't let go."Drive faster!" I shouted at the driver. "Faster, damn it!"The car flew down the dark road. Trees whipped past the windows. In the back seat, Sophia held her phone so tight her knuckles were white."Mom will be fine," Danny said. He kept saying it, over and over. "They must have made a mistake. It has to be someone with the same name. Or maybe she dropped her passport, and someone else picked it up.""Yes." Sophia nodded too fast. "That has to be it. The police made a mistake.""It can't be her," Danny said. "It absolutely can't be her."I pressed my forehead to the cold window and closed my eyes.*God, I am begging you. Please don't let Bella die. Take anything from me. Just not her.*Red and blue lights flashed ahead of us. Fire trucks. Police cars. Yellow tape across the road. The car hadn't even stopped before I threw the door open and ran.The smell hit me first. Logan's POV"The voices on that recording are clearly yours and Bella's." I stepped closer to Ruby. "How dare you still deny it?""Logan, please—""She is the love of my life!" My shout rang off the stone walls. "How dare you? How dare you destroy her like this?"Ruby flinched. Behind her, the guests went completely still."Five years." My voice cracked. "She lived through something worse than death for five years, while you played our whole family for fools. You made me send her to prison with my own hands. I stood in that courtroom and swore against my own wife." I pressed my fist to my chest. "I dirtied my soul for you so badly that I'll never be clean again. Not for as long as I live.""No! I was framed!" Ruby shook her head wildly. "I didn't do it! Logan, I swear I didn't do it!"I turned away from her."Security!"Two men in black suits ran down the aisle."Hold her until the police get here," I said. "I want her in prison. Tonight."They grabbed Ruby's arms. She twisted and kic

Logan's POV"Logan, none of this is true."Ruby grabbed the front of my jacket with both hands. Her whole body was shaking."How could I ever do something so horrible? She's lying!" She spun toward Rhonda and pointed a trembling finger. "You're just a convict! Why should anyone believe a single word you say?"For a second, nobody moved. Then Danny stepped forward."Exactly." His voice was shaky, but he made it loud. "Dad, if you told me Mom did something this evil, I'd actually believe it. But Aunt Ruby? She could never do something so disgusting."I stared at my son. Five minutes ago, he heard Ruby wish him dead. And still, he was standing in front of her like a shield."Logan, do you hear that?" Ruby sobbed. "They believe me. Our children believe me. I'm being framed!"Sophia wiped her wet face and moved to Ruby's other side."Dad, you know how kind Auntie is. She wouldn't even step on an ant. It's impossible for her to do this.""Yeah," Danny said. "Mom just had to bite back one la

Logan's POV"Oh, darling, it's been far too long."Big Rhonda spread her arms wide like she wanted a hug. Ruby stepped back so fast she nearly tripped over her own gown."Thanks to that massive pile of cash you gave me," Rhonda said, "my life in prison these past few years was a total breeze."The guests began to murmur."Cash?" I heard my own voice, rough and strange. "What cash?"Rhonda turned to me and raised one thick eyebrow. "Oh? She didn't tell her family?" She looked at Danny and Sophia and grinned. "Five years ago, your mother... wait, sorry. I mean your *stepmother*." She pointed at Ruby. "She paid me a fortune to torture her enemy in prison. Your real mother. Bella Carter."Sophia's hand flew to her mouth."You're lying!" Ruby screamed. "I don't even know who you are!""You don't know me?" Rhonda laughed. "It hasn't been that long, sweetheart. Have you also forgotten how you humiliated Bella in there?"She pulled out her phone and walked straight to the big screen behind th

Bella's POVThe rain in London was soft and gray, nothing like the fire I had left behind.Evelyn led me into a bright dance studio with tall mirrors and a wooden floor that shone like honey. A tall man in a black sweater stood by the window. He turned when we walked in."Bella, this is my brother, Sebastian Fernandez," Evelyn said. "He runs a dance company here in the UK."Sebastian came forward and took my hand in both of his."Bella, your dancing has been the greatest inspiration of my career," he said. "I watched every recording of you I could find. It's an honor to finally meet you."My throat tightened. Nobody had looked at me like that in five years. Like I was worth something."Thank you," I whispered.Evelyn handed me a brown envelope. "This is your new identity, just like you asked."I opened it. A new passport. A new birth certificate. A new name printed in neat black letters."Good." I closed the envelope and lifted my chin. "Starting today, Bella Carter no longer exists.

  • They Regret Losing Me Too Late    Chapter 05

Bella's POV This was my last night in this house. I sat on the edge of my bed and looked around the room. Ten years of my life lived inside these walls. Now everything I owned fit into one small suitcase. My phone buzzed. I answered on the first ring. "Bella, your flight is at eight tomorrow night," Evelyn said. "Do you want me to pick you up?" "No. I'll get there myself." "Are you sure?" "Very sure." I looked at the door. "There's something I have to finish first." I had just hung up when the door swung open without a knock. Ruby walked in holding a long white gown against her body. Blue stones covered the bodice and caught the light like a thousand tiny stars. In her other hand was the wooden music box. "Bella, look." She turned in a slow circle. "Your daughter ordered this gown for me. Beautiful, right?" I smiled. Her face twisted. "What are you smiling at? The man you've loved for over twenty years is marrying me tomorrow." I said nothing. She lifted the music box a
