Bella's POV

"Bella, we haven't really talked since you got out."

Ruby stood by her white car in the hotel parking lot, keys swinging from her finger. Her smile was soft and sweet, the same smile she wore in court five years ago.

"Let's ride together. Just the two of us, okay?"

I looked at Logan. He was buckling Sophia into the back seat of his car.

"Yeah, go with her," he said without looking up. "You two are like sisters. You should talk. We'll take the other car."

"Logan, I don't want—"

"Bella." His voice turned hard. "Ruby is trying. Don't ruin this."

Danny leaned out of the window. "Be nice to Mother, okay?"

I swallowed the words in my throat and got into Ruby's car.

For ten minutes, she said nothing. She just hummed along to the radio. Then she missed the turn to the restaurant.

"Ruby, that was our exit."

"I know." She turned onto a dirt road. Old warehouses stood on both sides, their windows broken and black.

"Where are we going?"

She didn't answer. The car stopped in front of a huge gray building with a rusted sign. Weston Meat Processing. The paint was half gone.

My stomach dropped. I knew this place. Years ago, when Ruby had nothing, I begged a friend to give her a job here.

"Get out," Ruby said.

"No."

She reached under her seat and pulled out a small black stun gun. Before I could move, pain shot through my side. My whole body jerked, and everything went white.

*********

When I opened my eyes, my wrists were tied to a metal pipe. The air smelled of rust and old blood. Right beside me stood a giant steel meat grinder, its wide mouth full of dull, heavy blades.

Ruby stood in front of me with her arms folded.

"Bella," she said sweetly. "Did you really think you could come back and take everything? Dream on."

"Ruby, you psycho!" I pulled at the ropes until my skin burned. "What are you doing?"

"You think you can take back everything?" She laughed. "Logan, Danny, Sophia. I'm the only one they care about now. Not you. Never you again. I won't let you win."

"I never did anything to you! I gave you a home!"

"You gave me *this*." She threw her arms wide. "You made me work in this hellhole. Cutting meat. Smelling blood every day while you danced on a stage and played the perfect wife. I suffered here, Bella." She walked to the wall and put her hand on a big red switch. "Now it's shut down. It's the perfect place to end you."

She pulled the switch.

The grinder roared to life. The blades started turning, slow, then faster. The noise filled the whole building. The floor shook under my feet.

"Ruby, stop! Please!"

Headlights flashed through the broken windows. A car door slammed outside.

Ruby's face changed in one second. She threw herself onto the floor, grabbed her leg, and started to scream.

"Help! Somebody help us!"

The big door slid open. Logan ran in first, the kids right behind him.

"Ruby!" he shouted. "Bella!"

"Godmother!" Sophia cried.

"Mother!" Danny ran past me without stopping. He fell to his knees beside Ruby.

"Logan, my leg," Ruby sobbed. "She dragged me here. She tried to push me in. I fought her, and she tied herself up to make it look like... I can't walk, Logan. I can't walk!"

"That's a lie!" I screamed over the machine. "Logan, she did this! Look at the ropes! How could I tie myself?"

Logan looked at me. Then he looked at Ruby crying on the floor. I watched him choose.

"Bella, you're the strong one," he said. "Wait. Let's save Ruby first. We'll come back for you."

"Logan, no! Turn off the machine! Please, just turn it off!"

He lifted Ruby into his arms. Danny and Sophia held onto her hands like she might disappear.

"Hold on, Mother," Sophia whispered. "We've got you."

Not one of them looked back at me.

Over Logan's shoulder, Ruby opened her eyes. She smiled. Then her hand slipped into her coat pocket, and something small and silver dropped from her fingers.

A lighter.

It hit the oily floor near the door, still burning.

The fire caught at once. It ran along the dirty floor like a living thing, climbing the old wooden crates, licking up the walls. Black smoke rolled toward the ceiling.

"Logan!" I screamed. "Logan, come back!"

The door was already empty.

Smoke filled my mouth. My eyes burned. The heat pressed against my skin. I pulled at the ropes again and again until my wrists were wet with blood. The grinder kept roaring beside me.

They said they would come back for me.

They never did.

The last thing I saw was the orange light swallowing the doorway. Then everything went black.

**********

A soft beeping pulled me awake.

White ceiling. White sheets. The sharp smell of medicine. My wrists were wrapped in bandages, and my throat felt like I had swallowed sand.

A hospital.

I was alive.

The phone on the small table beside my bed buzzed. I reached for it with shaking fingers.

"Hello?" My voice came out as a rough whisper.

"Bella? Where are you? Bella Carter?"

Tears filled my eyes before I could stop them. "Evelyn?"

"Yes, it's me. I called your house, and your maid said you were in the hospital. I got your room number from her.". "Are you all right?"

"I'm alive," I said. "That's enough."

"Listen to me. Bella, I booked your flight. I'll pick you up in a week."

I closed my eyes. One week. Seven more days, and I would be free of all of them.

"Thank you, Evelyn," I whispered. "I'll be ready on time."

The line clicked off.

"Ready for what?"

My heart stopped.

I turned my head slowly. Logan stood in the open doorway, a paper bag of fruit in his hand. His eyes were fixed on the phone in mine.

"Where are you going, Bella?"

Logan's POVI had a terrifying feeling in my chest, like a hand was squeezing my heart and wouldn't let go."Drive faster!" I shouted at the driver. "Faster, damn it!"The car flew down the dark road. Trees whipped past the windows. In the back seat, Sophia held her phone so tight her knuckles were white."Mom will be fine," Danny said. He kept saying it, over and over. "They must have made a mistake. It has to be someone with the same name. Or maybe she dropped her passport, and someone else picked it up.""Yes." Sophia nodded too fast. "That has to be it. The police made a mistake.""It can't be her," Danny said. "It absolutely can't be her."I pressed my forehead to the cold window and closed my eyes.*God, I am begging you. Please don't let Bella die. Take anything from me. Just not her.*Red and blue lights flashed ahead of us. Fire trucks. Police cars. Yellow tape across the road. The car hadn't even stopped before I threw the door open and ran.The smell hit me first. Logan's POV"The voices on that recording are clearly yours and Bella's." I stepped closer to Ruby. "How dare you still deny it?""Logan, please—""She is the love of my life!" My shout rang off the stone walls. "How dare you? How dare you destroy her like this?"Ruby flinched. Behind her, the guests went completely still."Five years." My voice cracked. "She lived through something worse than death for five years, while you played our whole family for fools. You made me send her to prison with my own hands. I stood in that courtroom and swore against my own wife." I pressed my fist to my chest. "I dirtied my soul for you so badly that I'll never be clean again. Not for as long as I live.""No! I was framed!" Ruby shook her head wildly. "I didn't do it! Logan, I swear I didn't do it!"I turned away from her."Security!"Two men in black suits ran down the aisle."Hold her until the police get here," I said. "I want her in prison. Tonight."They grabbed Ruby's arms. She twisted and kic

Logan's POV"Logan, none of this is true."Ruby grabbed the front of my jacket with both hands. Her whole body was shaking."How could I ever do something so horrible? She's lying!" She spun toward Rhonda and pointed a trembling finger. "You're just a convict! Why should anyone believe a single word you say?"For a second, nobody moved. Then Danny stepped forward."Exactly." His voice was shaky, but he made it loud. "Dad, if you told me Mom did something this evil, I'd actually believe it. But Aunt Ruby? She could never do something so disgusting."I stared at my son. Five minutes ago, he heard Ruby wish him dead. And still, he was standing in front of her like a shield."Logan, do you hear that?" Ruby sobbed. "They believe me. Our children believe me. I'm being framed!"Sophia wiped her wet face and moved to Ruby's other side."Dad, you know how kind Auntie is. She wouldn't even step on an ant. It's impossible for her to do this.""Yeah," Danny said. "Mom just had to bite back one la

Logan's POV"Oh, darling, it's been far too long."Big Rhonda spread her arms wide like she wanted a hug. Ruby stepped back so fast she nearly tripped over her own gown."Thanks to that massive pile of cash you gave me," Rhonda said, "my life in prison these past few years was a total breeze."The guests began to murmur."Cash?" I heard my own voice, rough and strange. "What cash?"Rhonda turned to me and raised one thick eyebrow. "Oh? She didn't tell her family?" She looked at Danny and Sophia and grinned. "Five years ago, your mother... wait, sorry. I mean your *stepmother*." She pointed at Ruby. "She paid me a fortune to torture her enemy in prison. Your real mother. Bella Carter."Sophia's hand flew to her mouth."You're lying!" Ruby screamed. "I don't even know who you are!""You don't know me?" Rhonda laughed. "It hasn't been that long, sweetheart. Have you also forgotten how you humiliated Bella in there?"She pulled out her phone and walked straight to the big screen behind th

Bella's POVThe rain in London was soft and gray, nothing like the fire I had left behind.Evelyn led me into a bright dance studio with tall mirrors and a wooden floor that shone like honey. A tall man in a black sweater stood by the window. He turned when we walked in."Bella, this is my brother, Sebastian Fernandez," Evelyn said. "He runs a dance company here in the UK."Sebastian came forward and took my hand in both of his."Bella, your dancing has been the greatest inspiration of my career," he said. "I watched every recording of you I could find. It's an honor to finally meet you."My throat tightened. Nobody had looked at me like that in five years. Like I was worth something."Thank you," I whispered.Evelyn handed me a brown envelope. "This is your new identity, just like you asked."I opened it. A new passport. A new birth certificate. A new name printed in neat black letters."Good." I closed the envelope and lifted my chin. "Starting today, Bella Carter no longer exists.

  • They Regret Losing Me Too Late    Chapter 05

Bella's POV This was my last night in this house. I sat on the edge of my bed and looked around the room. Ten years of my life lived inside these walls. Now everything I owned fit into one small suitcase. My phone buzzed. I answered on the first ring. "Bella, your flight is at eight tomorrow night," Evelyn said. "Do you want me to pick you up?" "No. I'll get there myself." "Are you sure?" "Very sure." I looked at the door. "There's something I have to finish first." I had just hung up when the door swung open without a knock. Ruby walked in holding a long white gown against her body. Blue stones covered the bodice and caught the light like a thousand tiny stars. In her other hand was the wooden music box. "Bella, look." She turned in a slow circle. "Your daughter ordered this gown for me. Beautiful, right?" I smiled. Her face twisted. "What are you smiling at? The man you've loved for over twenty years is marrying me tomorrow." I said nothing. She lifted the music box a
