Chapter 4

Author: Rosemary
When Mother ended the surveillance feed, the image remained too blurred to prove what had happened. It still showed that my body had not changed position for hours.

She chose the explanation that asked nothing of her.

When the five-day coming-of-age trial ended, Elara was the first candidate out of the arena. Her life mark had stabilized, its silver lines clear around her wrist.

“I passed!” She caught Father’s arm, then looked toward our territory. “My life mark is stable, so the prophecy was wrong. We can go home and let Lyra out now.”

Father’s eyes reddened as he checked her mark and nodded. “Of course. We’ll leave now.”

“She’s been locked up for five days,” Elara said. “She hasn’t eaten or answered a single message. We need to take her to a healer.”

Mother wiped her tears as she entered the car. “I was too harsh. If Lyra apologizes, she’ll receive everything Elara does from now on. Once she recovers, we can complete the blessing at the Temple of the First Moon together.”

For eighteen years, I had waited to hear them promise that they would treat me fairly. Now that the words had finally come, they carried surprisingly little weight.

Only after Elara’s life mark stabilized had they remembered their other daughter needed care. Mother’s promise still came with conditions. I had to apologize, obey, and prove I would never inconvenience Elara before earning a share of their love.

I had no use for it anymore.

At the estate, Elara ran straight to the kitchen. The meat pie she had left in the oven remained untouched, its filling sour and its crust dried hard.

“She didn’t eat anything.”

Elara raced toward the underground level. “Lyra hasn’t come out in five days. Something happened to her!”

Mother followed her into the corridor. Her guilt hardened into anger when she saw the silver door still locked. She struck the panel.

“Lyra, the trial is over. How much longer are you going to continue this?”

My body remained silent behind the door.

“Do you know how worried Elara has been? She couldn’t eat or sleep, and she asked about you after every round. She came home safely, and you’re still punishing her with your silence.”

I had been dead for five days, yet they could still find new crimes in my silence.

Father stepped forward, containing his anger. “You have disappointed me. We worried about you, while you chose to hide here and waste everyone’s time. Do you feel any remorse?”

Elara moved between them and the door. “She wouldn’t ignore us without a reason. She hasn’t opened my messages or moved on the surveillance feed. Why do you still think she’s pretending?”

Their expressions froze, and the corridor fell quiet.

Ronan hurried down the stairs with his phone. “I called Lyra’s trial instructor to ask whether an exception could be made. He confirmed she missed the trial and filed an emergency report. Mooncrest wants to know whether anyone prevented her from leaving the territory.”

He turned toward the silver door. “Did you contact him beforehand, Lyra? Why did you make this a formal investigation? Academy intervention could freeze Elara’s result.”

Mother’s hesitation vanished. “We raised you for eighteen years, and this is how you repay us? You missed your trial, so now you want the academy to invalidate Elara’s result?”

Father’s voice went cold. “Elara has always defended you, and you keep trying to drag her down. We returned immediately and planned to include you in the Temple of the First Moon blessing. What else do you want from this family?”

I had never contacted my instructor or requested a review. He had noticed that his student was missing and responded as a responsible adult should.

My parents had already written the accusation and delivered the verdict. They had practiced that skill for eighteen years.

Elara alone refused to join them. She grasped the silver handle and looked up at the unchanged green status light.

“Lyra hasn’t replied in five days,” she said. “She hasn’t moved on the surveillance feed, and I still can’t feel her through our twin bond. Open the door.”

“Enough!”

Mother yanked Elara away and pulled her behind her, as though I remained the danger in that room.

“We told her where the spare key was. She could have opened the door from inside. If she refuses to come out, she is deliberately delaying us.”

Elara struck the wall but regained her balance. Her gaze returned to the locked door.

Many years later, early summer settled over Cedarvale.Sophie was six. Danielle had been born only seven minutes before her, yet she considered herself the responsible older twin. Every afternoon, she waited on the steps of the young wolves’ school until Sophie came racing out of the next classroom.“Danielle!”Sophie bounded down the steps, her braids and blue training ribbons flying behind her. She threw herself against Danielle’s back so enthusiastically that they nearly fell into the dandelions.Danielle steadied them and wiped a honey-biscuit crumb from Sophie’s mouth. “If you scrape your knees again, Mom will inspect both of us for injuries.”“You always catch me,” Sophie replied, grinning through the gap left by a missing front tooth. She seized her sister’s hand and pulled her toward their parents beyond the school gates. On the walk home, Sophie announced that she had been the first student in spirit-rune class to make her moonstone glow.Their mother retied one of her ribbons

That night, Danielle fell asleep beneath the alcove at the recovery lodge, with one hand resting against my urn and the unfinished protection petitions spread across her lap.For the first time since my death, our twin bond opened without pain. She found herself in the summer meadow where we had trained as children. I stood beneath the rowan trees in a clean academy cloak. The wound on my forehead was gone, and frost no longer covered my hands.Danielle stared at me before running across the grass and pulling me into her arms.“Sophie, I came back too late.”She touched my face, my shoulders, and finally my fingers, checking every place the cold had marked.“Did you hear me searching for you?”“I heard you,” I said. “I heard every time you argued with them, every appeal you tried to file, and every time you called through our bond.”Her grip tightened. “I should have abandoned the trial sooner. I should have taken the key before they could stop me.”“You were a child trying to fight th

Northreach Academy released its final rankings three days after my funeral. Ethan had placed second and earned direct admission. He stared at the embossed acceptance seal for a long time, then returned the packet unsigned. The following morning, he went to the eastern rail terminal carrying two travel cases. He placed my practice map on the seat beside him and sent a message to my silent phone.Platform four. I saved you the window seat. We can still arrive before registration closes. His mother found him there after sunset and told him again that I had been buried. Ethan answered that the pathologist must have made a mistake. He returned the next day. On the third, he called Northreach and demanded that the registrar restore my name to the class.“Sophie Campbell qualified years ago,” he insisted. “Her token was taken from her. That cannot erase what she earned.”The registrar ended the call, yet Ethan kept his phone pressed to his ear until the station emptied. Whenever the doors ope

Mother turned to the next recovered entry. The examination rankings came out today, but I cannot feel happy. Elara scored lower than I did, so I am afraid to go home. I do not know what to say when Mom asks. I am afraid she will lock me in the winter store again. The following entry had been written the next night.I was locked inside again, just as I expected. Mom slapped me several times and kept asking why I wanted to ruin Elara’s life. Everything hurts.I swear I did not do it on purpose. It is so cold here, and I am hungry. Elara hid some chocolate inside my stuffed wolf. Something sweet might make the pain easier to bear, right?Mother’s fingers tightened around the printed pages. The third entry read:Today was the first day of the new school term. My instructor wanted me to serve as cohort captain, but I refused. The last time I accepted that position, Mom ignored me for three days because I was not supposed to stand above Elara.I obey everything Mom and Dad tell me. I only wi

The alarm and shouting from the lower level soon drew estate staff and neighboring pack members. Someone called the territorial police, and within half an hour, officers had sealed the underground corridor with warning tape.A forensic pathologist examined my body before it was carried away. Several days later, Father and Mother sat across from the lead investigator with the official report between them. They read the same lines repeatedly, as if the words might change.“Lyra Blackwood died of hypothermia. Her estimated time of death was approximately five days before discovery, during the morning of the first day of the Mooncrest Academy Selection Trial. Prolonged exposure to silver suppressed her wolf spirit and prevented natural healing.”Father’s eyes remained fixed on the date.“Five days ago,” he murmured. “That was the morning of the trial.”The memory returned with terrible clarity. I had knelt before him and begged for my selection token while blood ran from my forehead. He ha

Mother dropped to her knees in the water as she caught me. My body had frozen against the silver door with my right arm raised before my chest, and my curled fingers still seemed ready to finish one last knock. Frozen blood covered half my face, while fine crystals clung to the other side. Even my training cloak had hardened around me.She tried to lower me, but my limbs would not bend, leaving her to hold me against her chest. When she wrapped her fingers around my right hand, my skin felt as cold and unyielding as stone.“Lyra, Mom is here.” She rubbed the back of my hand, her voice shaking. “Open your eyes. We’re leaving this place now.”Her wolf spirit released a broken howl through the pack link, yet I remained motionless in her arms. When Mother looked past me into the winter store, she saw the internal cooling panel. The red display read −22°F, and a system failure light flashed beside it. The green light outside had shown standby for five days, while the failed relay inside had
