Chapter 3

Autor: Yasmine
We had the family portrait taken at the house. The photographer waved me over. "Stand between your parents."

Spencer spoke up. "Put Celeste in the middle. That's where she stands every year."

My mother hesitated. "But today was supposed to be for Evelyn..."

Celeste stepped back. "It's fine, Mom. I'll stand off to the side."

Every one of them gave me a hard look. In the end, my father pulled Celeste into the middle and settled the matter. "We're all family. What difference does it make where anyone stands?"

I looked at him. "If it makes no difference where anyone stands, why can't she stand at the side?"

My mother looked back and forth between us. She clearly wanted to say something, but in the end, she only took my hand. "Let's do it this way for now. Later, we'll take one with just the two of us. All right?"

The portrait was supposed to be for me in the first place, yet I was still the one asked to step aside.

The old me never let anyone take something from me a second time.

But this was my first family portrait, so I ended up at the far edge while Celeste stood between my parents, with both my brothers gathered around her as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

I got the family portrait I had wanted. But when I looked at the close-knit little family in it and at the person on the edge who did not fit in, something shifted inside me. I looked like an outsider who had wandered into someone else's happy home.

After the photos, we all went to the law office.

The lawyer laid out the documents. "After Evelyn went missing, her share of the assets was transferred to Celeste. Do you want them transferred back to her now?"

My mother barely hesitated. "Transfer them. They were Evelyn's, and they should go back to her."

Julian objected at once. "Mom, she's about to be married off!"

"They'll still be hers after she gets married." This time, my mother didn't give in.

But then Celeste started crying. The firmness drained from my mother's face, and she looked torn.

She turned to me. It took her a long time to speak. "Evelyn, the assets will absolutely be returned to you. It's just... can you give Celeste a few days? I'll sit down with her and sort everything out myself."

I was done listening to her promises. Celeste had felt unwell, so my mother had stayed with her and forgotten to come back for me. She promised we would take a portrait with just the two of us later. She promised to transfer the assets in a few days. Every time, I was the one pushed aside. Every promise came to nothing. This time, I would take back what was mine.

So I had my assistant release a story, and it quickly made the front page of every major news outlet: [Whitmore's Biological Daughter Returns. Will Celeste Lose Her Place in the family?]

Someone followed up with a post about the Celeste Children's Home: [This home was founded to honor the missing biological daughter. Now that Evelyn is back, why does it still bear the adopted daughter's name?]

The story spread faster than anyone expected. People from families like theirs were especially sensitive to this kind of thing.

Within half an hour, the society girls who had been fawning over Celeste had deleted every photo of themselves with her.

Celeste called one of them, only to be told, "We don't associate with a fake heir.

"Don't be stupid. The real daughter is back, and they'll put you out sooner or later. What gives you the right to be in our circle?"

Reporters even cornered them at the law office. "Ms. Whitmore, everyone says you're going to lose your position as heir. Do you have a comment?"

Celeste wiped her eyes. "You all stay with Evelyn. I'll handle the press myself." My mother immediately rose to her feet. "How can you go alone?" My brothers stood up right behind her.

After taking two steps, my mother stopped and looked at the unsigned documents on the table. "Evelyn, maybe I should stay..."

My father cut her off with a frown. "There are reporters everywhere outside, and Celeste isn't well. What good would it do for you to stay?"

My mother struggled with the decision for a few seconds, then went to Celeste. "This won't take long."

The family members who had promised the night before to stay with me through every step of the paperwork were clustered around Celeste in an instant.

"Dad, are you sure you want to leave me behind again?" I asked one last time.

The question stopped him for a second, but then he grew impatient. "Evelyn, don't make a scene. The name change isn't urgent."

In under two minutes, all of them were gone.

I remembered what I had overheard as I passed the medical suite the night before. "She doesn't want this marriage. What if she backs out on the wedding day?" "We could give her a little something beforehand. If she's unconscious, she can't resist."

I had expected at least one person to call her out, but neither of my brothers objected. They only warned her not to get caught.

From beginning to end, I was the one they threw away.

The lawyer watched them leave with his mouth open, then asked carefully, "Evelyn, do we continue?"

"No. Don't change my surname to Whitmore. I don't want to be the heir, either."

I gave my assistant one last instruction: [Don't wait. Have Ross freeze the hotels they pledged.]

While my father was helping Celeste deal with the press, he got a call.

Two of their key hotels had been hit with asset-freeze notices at the same time, and the cash flow they had managed to maintain was about to dry up.

He panicked. He thought the trouble between Celeste and me had shaken the markets and made the public think he would abandon his adopted daughter now that his biological daughter was back.

A split second later, the Wardens stationed throughout the venue moved as one.Every exit was sealed. Several people who hadn't even gotten close to me were restrained on the spot.Armed Wardens surrounded the hall.Marcus ordered them to move, but nothing happened. His expression changed. "What is this?"He turned to leave, but several Wardens seized him, beat him, and shot him in both legs.Pinned to the floor, he still lifted his head and glared at me. "You little brat. I never thought you'd get this far. I should have killed you back then."As a child, I would instinctively take a different route to avoid walking past him.If I displeased him or returned without finishing a job, I knew I'd be beaten and locked in the dark. Now he lay on the floor at my feet. "I never thought that six years later, I'd get to round up everyone who slipped away back then. Welcome back, Marcus. The law is waiting for you."On the other side of the room, Wardens were holding my father, both my brothers,

My mother's head snapped up. "What did you just say? You've lost your mind!"My father gestured around the room. The window wouldn't even close. "Look at this. We don't even know where we'll be living next month. And Evelyn? She's twenty-two years old and controls the entire Vail Group!"Julian slowly raised his head.My father continued. "We're her only next of kin! If she dies, the Whitmore family will inherit at least part of the Vail Group!"My mother came to her feet. "Have you lost your mind?"The more he spoke, the calmer he became. "We won't do it ourselves. Plenty of other people want her dead."Julian was quiet for a moment before saying, "If they do it, nothing will lead back to us."Spencer followed his lead. "Vail's old enemies must know her weaknesses better than we do."My mother went rigid."Enough!" She slapped my father hard across the face."She's your daughter! She suffered out there for sixteen years and barely made it back alive."Her voice grew hoarser as she con

"And whose idea was it to drug me on my wedding day?"Celeste's eyes went wide. "Evelyn, what are you talking about?"I played the recording, and the color slowly drained from her face.My mother's head snapped around. "Celeste, how could you be so vicious? She's my own daughter. It took me years to get her back, and you were going to drug her!"My father looked equally grim. He turned to his two sons and Celeste. "Apologize."My father forced all three of them to their knees and made them apologize to me in front of everyone. Their reluctance was plain on their faces."Evelyn, the assets have been transferred, the children's home has been renamed, and they've apologized. Now you can help us with the debt, right?" my father asked, rubbing his hands together.I shook my head. "So your sincerity comes with a price tag. Those things were mine to begin with. And you think a few million is enough to cover a billion-dollar debt? Do I look stupid to you?"It was time they got a taste of the l

They arrived at the venue early that evening but couldn't even get onto the main floor.People who used to walk up and toast them at Whitmore parties now passed them without stopping.Celeste stood outside the barrier in a carefully chosen gown.I walked in surrounded by people, and the compliments and flattery never stopped. They finally saw what the Whitmore family's so-called old-money status had really been worth all those years. Next to the Vail Group, it counted for nothing. After the signing, I walked out, and my father called after me. "Evelyn."The room went quiet. I motioned to the crowd, and they opened a path."What happened before was our fault. But give your father a chance to make it right."The next day, he came to my office with a lawyer. The Whitmore family was nearly bankrupt, and by then, neither the title of heir nor shares in the family business were worth anything. The only assets I actually took back were the last two properties that had been transferred out of

This time there was nothing on Celeste's face but despair. My father and brothers looked increasingly grim.I sat back in the chair. "You saw for yourselves. It isn't that I won't help. The creditor won't agree. It looks like there won't be any relief from that billion-dollar debt for now."His face changed. He'd been the head of the family for so long that even now, he wanted to pull rank on me as my father."Evelyn, I know now that you're capable. However big Vail gets, you still have Whitmore blood in your veins."Beneath it all was the same old lecture, and it made me sick.I pointed at the door. "Are you finished? Then get out!"My brothers' faces went gray, and they clenched their fists, but neither of them moved. It was the first time I had seen that look on their faces. They were dying to come at me and scream in my face, but now that they knew who I was, they had to hold themselves back.So they did know how to tread carefully when someone else held the power. The Wardens came

My father reacted first, his expression hardening with anger. "Evelyn? What are you doing here?"Spencer took a step forward. "Have you lost your mind? That's the Vail chairman's chair. Get out of it now!"Celeste put a hand over her mouth. "Evelyn, did you sneak in here? This is Vail headquarters. You're going to cause trouble for Dad."My father clearly thought the same thing. He rushed at me to drag me out of the chair! But my assistant stopped him.My assistant addressed me respectfully. "Ms. Vail, the Whitmore family is being disrespectful. Would you like me to have them removed?"My father struggled to get the words out. "What... did you just call her?""This is Ms. Vail, chairman and founder of the Vail Group."I couldn't be bothered to explain. I lifted a hand. "Send them in."A dozen or more Wardens dressed in black rushed in.My father's face changed.Everyone on the East Coast knew the Vail Group had a private security unit that never worked for outsiders. No politician or b
