Chapter 2

Author: Yasmine
When I got back to the Whitmore estate, Celeste was lying in the private medical suite on oxygen.

The room was fit for a palace and filled with her belongings. It had been built just for her.

My mother sat beside the bed, holding Celeste's hand. My brothers were gathered around her.

My mother stood as soon as she saw me. "Evelyn, I promised I'd come back for you last night, but Celeste kept feeling unwell, and I was busy until late. I'm sorry. I've removed everyone who said those things about you from the Whitmore guest list."

That was the first time since I had returned that anyone had apologized for leaving me behind.

Then she looked at Celeste in bed and lowered her voice. "But last night was a shock for Celeste. Please don't fight with each other like that again."

Spencer's face hardened. "She has a heart condition, and you deliberately used the engagement to trigger an attack."

"That's enough from you, too. Evelyn just got back. Don't take that tone with your sister."

Celeste slowly sat up. "Once you marry into the Ross family, Evelyn, you'll see how good life can be."

Mom, I like it when you choose me. But this tiny bit of your love won't stop your adopted daughter from digging her own grave.

I gave her a knowing smile. "Yes. I'm so happy. I can't wait."

Then I texted my assistant: [Tell Ross the grace period on the Whitmores' billion-dollar debt is over. Start collection today.]

If she wanted me married off to clear the debt that badly, I would make the debt even worse. I wanted to see what my family would choose under that much pressure.

When I left the medical suite, I found my father pacing the living room with his phone to his ear. "We agreed on another month."

I couldn't hear what the person on the other end said, but my father's expression changed abruptly. "Twenty-four hours? Where am I supposed to get a billion dollars?"

My mother hurried over. "What is it?"

He hung up. "Ross canceled the grace period. They're going after the assets we pledged."

I left them to deal with it. For the first time, I took a real look at the house where I had been born. The hallway was lined with family photographs: my parents' wedding, both of my brothers' graduations.

There were photos of Celeste on a horse for the first time, at her first ball, and at her debut when she turned eighteen...

Not one photograph of me. Not even a baby picture.

My mother followed me out, looking uncomfortable. "There used to be a lot of pictures of you, but Celeste is fragile and has always felt like a stand-in, so we put them away. I'll arrange for a photographer tomorrow, and we'll take a new family portrait."

I looked at her. "All right."

Her relief was obvious.

Then a news alert popped up on my phone: [The Celeste Children's Home marks its sixteenth anniversary next month.]

I had seen an article about that home in an old newspaper not long after the ring took me.

My father had told a reporter, "When my daughter comes home, this place will be named after her. It's a gift for her."

I held the phone out to her. "Mom, wasn't that home built for me? When will you change the name?"

A few seconds passed in silence. "It was originally built for you, yes. Your father and I didn't think it through. I'll talk to him about changing the name back. But can we wait until Celeste is a little stronger?"

Celeste came out of the medical suite just then. "Mom, if Evelyn wants the name changed, change it. I've had it all these years. It should go back to her."

Julian started in on me. "Says who? Celeste has run it for years, and you've only been back for five minutes, but you already want the name changed!"

Suddenly, everything became clear.

My people had told me the Whitmore family had found me long ago but had never come to get me. Now I knew why: they already had a favorite daughter at home.

They had let her remove my photographs, erase every trace of me, take over the charity that was meant for me, and even take my place as the Whitmore daughter.

My mother truly wanted to make it up to me, but every time Celeste looked hurt, she rushed to her without a second thought and forgot about me.

Later, my father came out of the study and handed me a document. "The family lawyer will officially change your surname to Whitmore tomorrow."

I had asked many times when I could change my surname back to Whitmore.

He had always said the family paperwork was complicated. My mother had told me to settle into the house first.

After a month of delays, the moment my engagement to Mr. Ross was settled, everything could suddenly be done at once.

I pretended to be puzzled. "That fast this time?"

He looked at me. "Mr. Ross is marrying a Whitmore daughter, so your status has to be restored. Now you need to marry him as soon as possible, before the Ross family makes things difficult for us."

Afraid I would refuse, my mother took my hand. "The whole family will go with you tomorrow."

Seeing how badly they wanted me gone, something tightened in my chest. All I wanted was to be back with my parents and know what it felt like to have a family. Yet the family I had ached for remembered I was a Whitmore only when there was a debt to clear.

A split second later, the Wardens stationed throughout the venue moved as one.Every exit was sealed. Several people who hadn't even gotten close to me were restrained on the spot.Armed Wardens surrounded the hall.Marcus ordered them to move, but nothing happened. His expression changed. "What is this?"He turned to leave, but several Wardens seized him, beat him, and shot him in both legs.Pinned to the floor, he still lifted his head and glared at me. "You little brat. I never thought you'd get this far. I should have killed you back then."As a child, I would instinctively take a different route to avoid walking past him.If I displeased him or returned without finishing a job, I knew I'd be beaten and locked in the dark. Now he lay on the floor at my feet. "I never thought that six years later, I'd get to round up everyone who slipped away back then. Welcome back, Marcus. The law is waiting for you."On the other side of the room, Wardens were holding my father, both my brothers,

My mother's head snapped up. "What did you just say? You've lost your mind!"My father gestured around the room. The window wouldn't even close. "Look at this. We don't even know where we'll be living next month. And Evelyn? She's twenty-two years old and controls the entire Vail Group!"Julian slowly raised his head.My father continued. "We're her only next of kin! If she dies, the Whitmore family will inherit at least part of the Vail Group!"My mother came to her feet. "Have you lost your mind?"The more he spoke, the calmer he became. "We won't do it ourselves. Plenty of other people want her dead."Julian was quiet for a moment before saying, "If they do it, nothing will lead back to us."Spencer followed his lead. "Vail's old enemies must know her weaknesses better than we do."My mother went rigid."Enough!" She slapped my father hard across the face."She's your daughter! She suffered out there for sixteen years and barely made it back alive."Her voice grew hoarser as she con

"And whose idea was it to drug me on my wedding day?"Celeste's eyes went wide. "Evelyn, what are you talking about?"I played the recording, and the color slowly drained from her face.My mother's head snapped around. "Celeste, how could you be so vicious? She's my own daughter. It took me years to get her back, and you were going to drug her!"My father looked equally grim. He turned to his two sons and Celeste. "Apologize."My father forced all three of them to their knees and made them apologize to me in front of everyone. Their reluctance was plain on their faces."Evelyn, the assets have been transferred, the children's home has been renamed, and they've apologized. Now you can help us with the debt, right?" my father asked, rubbing his hands together.I shook my head. "So your sincerity comes with a price tag. Those things were mine to begin with. And you think a few million is enough to cover a billion-dollar debt? Do I look stupid to you?"It was time they got a taste of the l

They arrived at the venue early that evening but couldn't even get onto the main floor.People who used to walk up and toast them at Whitmore parties now passed them without stopping.Celeste stood outside the barrier in a carefully chosen gown.I walked in surrounded by people, and the compliments and flattery never stopped. They finally saw what the Whitmore family's so-called old-money status had really been worth all those years. Next to the Vail Group, it counted for nothing. After the signing, I walked out, and my father called after me. "Evelyn."The room went quiet. I motioned to the crowd, and they opened a path."What happened before was our fault. But give your father a chance to make it right."The next day, he came to my office with a lawyer. The Whitmore family was nearly bankrupt, and by then, neither the title of heir nor shares in the family business were worth anything. The only assets I actually took back were the last two properties that had been transferred out of

This time there was nothing on Celeste's face but despair. My father and brothers looked increasingly grim.I sat back in the chair. "You saw for yourselves. It isn't that I won't help. The creditor won't agree. It looks like there won't be any relief from that billion-dollar debt for now."His face changed. He'd been the head of the family for so long that even now, he wanted to pull rank on me as my father."Evelyn, I know now that you're capable. However big Vail gets, you still have Whitmore blood in your veins."Beneath it all was the same old lecture, and it made me sick.I pointed at the door. "Are you finished? Then get out!"My brothers' faces went gray, and they clenched their fists, but neither of them moved. It was the first time I had seen that look on their faces. They were dying to come at me and scream in my face, but now that they knew who I was, they had to hold themselves back.So they did know how to tread carefully when someone else held the power. The Wardens came

My father reacted first, his expression hardening with anger. "Evelyn? What are you doing here?"Spencer took a step forward. "Have you lost your mind? That's the Vail chairman's chair. Get out of it now!"Celeste put a hand over her mouth. "Evelyn, did you sneak in here? This is Vail headquarters. You're going to cause trouble for Dad."My father clearly thought the same thing. He rushed at me to drag me out of the chair! But my assistant stopped him.My assistant addressed me respectfully. "Ms. Vail, the Whitmore family is being disrespectful. Would you like me to have them removed?"My father struggled to get the words out. "What... did you just call her?""This is Ms. Vail, chairman and founder of the Vail Group."I couldn't be bothered to explain. I lifted a hand. "Send them in."A dozen or more Wardens dressed in black rushed in.My father's face changed.Everyone on the East Coast knew the Vail Group had a private security unit that never worked for outsiders. No politician or b
