Chapter 4

Author: Yasmine
The next morning, the Whitmore family held an emergency press conference that was streamed everywhere.

My father made his position clear. "Evelyn's return doesn't change Celeste's place in this family. She grew up with us, and a DNA report doesn't change that."

My mother held Celeste's hand. "Celeste has always been good. She will always be ours. Evelyn is my daughter too, of course, and I don't want anybody attacking either of them."

For once, my brothers all said the same thing. According to them, Celeste was well-mannered and never embarrassed her parents. As for me, I'd come home, started trouble, and turned the house upside down.

At the end, my father looked into the camera. "I would like the speculation to stop. Whether Evelyn is back or not, Celeste's place in the Whitmore family will not change."

The comments poured in.

[Celeste is the one the Whitmore family actually raised.]

[The birth daughter was missing all those years. Who knows what she went through or what she turned into.]

Watching that family stand behind Celeste on a live stream, I understood every choice they had made. My father and brothers backed their princess without wavering. My mother loved me, but she loved someone else more. I had never been the only one.

Less than five minutes after the press conference ended, the Vail Group completed its purchase of the Whitmore estate.

The mortgage on the house had been overdue for a long time, and the bank was ready to sell it. I had put the sale on hold because I wanted my parents to feel secure. There was no need for that anymore.

That evening, when my parents' car pulled up, they found that every guard at the iron gates had been replaced.

My father rolled down the window. "Open the gate."

The guard didn't move. "I'm sorry, Mr. Whitmore. This property belongs to the Vail Group now. The new owner has given you twenty-four hours to vacate."

My father shoved the door open and got out. "Impossible! When did this house ever go up for sale?"

The guard said nothing else. My father called the bank and was told, "The mortgage payments were overdue, so the property went to auction, and the Vail Group bought it."

They all went quiet. Celeste was the first to speak. "Vacate? Then where do we live?"

My mother had an arm around her at once. "Don't be scared. Mom will work something out."

My father took another call. "Sir, two of our long-term partners have terminated their contracts, too. They say they don't dare cross the Vail Group."

The family was at its lowest point, and that was when the Vail Group came for them.

My father clenched his fist. "Get Evelyn married to Ross first. At least then we can buy some time on that billion-dollar debt. But tomorrow morning, we're going to the Vail Group. Whoever runs it is a lunatic who's expanding at any cost. If we don't sort this out, the family is finished."

He spent the night calling every contact he had left and finally got a meeting request through to the Vail Group.

In a single year, the Vail Group handled acquisitions worth dozens of times the Whitmore family's total assets.

The most powerful people on the East Coast waited months for a meeting with its mysterious young chairman.

So when Vail agreed to see him, my father actually thought the Whitmore family had finally caught a break.

Early the next morning, they arrived at Vail headquarters.

Celeste smoothed her dress, looking hopeful. "They say the founder of the Vail Group is young."

My mother smiled. "You've always been exceptional. You might be our family's way into Vail."

Celeste nodded shyly.

Spencer snorted. "Celeste is the one who delivers. Not like Evelyn, who doesn't understand the most basic rules."

An assistant showed them into the office. They walked in, visibly tense. The chairman sat facing away from them. My father said respectfully, "Mr. Vail, thank you for agreeing to see us."

When the chair turned and the chairman looked up, every one of them froze.

A split second later, the Wardens stationed throughout the venue moved as one.Every exit was sealed. Several people who hadn't even gotten close to me were restrained on the spot.Armed Wardens surrounded the hall.Marcus ordered them to move, but nothing happened. His expression changed. "What is this?"He turned to leave, but several Wardens seized him, beat him, and shot him in both legs.Pinned to the floor, he still lifted his head and glared at me. "You little brat. I never thought you'd get this far. I should have killed you back then."As a child, I would instinctively take a different route to avoid walking past him.If I displeased him or returned without finishing a job, I knew I'd be beaten and locked in the dark. Now he lay on the floor at my feet. "I never thought that six years later, I'd get to round up everyone who slipped away back then. Welcome back, Marcus. The law is waiting for you."On the other side of the room, Wardens were holding my father, both my brothers,

My mother's head snapped up. "What did you just say? You've lost your mind!"My father gestured around the room. The window wouldn't even close. "Look at this. We don't even know where we'll be living next month. And Evelyn? She's twenty-two years old and controls the entire Vail Group!"Julian slowly raised his head.My father continued. "We're her only next of kin! If she dies, the Whitmore family will inherit at least part of the Vail Group!"My mother came to her feet. "Have you lost your mind?"The more he spoke, the calmer he became. "We won't do it ourselves. Plenty of other people want her dead."Julian was quiet for a moment before saying, "If they do it, nothing will lead back to us."Spencer followed his lead. "Vail's old enemies must know her weaknesses better than we do."My mother went rigid."Enough!" She slapped my father hard across the face."She's your daughter! She suffered out there for sixteen years and barely made it back alive."Her voice grew hoarser as she con

"And whose idea was it to drug me on my wedding day?"Celeste's eyes went wide. "Evelyn, what are you talking about?"I played the recording, and the color slowly drained from her face.My mother's head snapped around. "Celeste, how could you be so vicious? She's my own daughter. It took me years to get her back, and you were going to drug her!"My father looked equally grim. He turned to his two sons and Celeste. "Apologize."My father forced all three of them to their knees and made them apologize to me in front of everyone. Their reluctance was plain on their faces."Evelyn, the assets have been transferred, the children's home has been renamed, and they've apologized. Now you can help us with the debt, right?" my father asked, rubbing his hands together.I shook my head. "So your sincerity comes with a price tag. Those things were mine to begin with. And you think a few million is enough to cover a billion-dollar debt? Do I look stupid to you?"It was time they got a taste of the l

They arrived at the venue early that evening but couldn't even get onto the main floor.People who used to walk up and toast them at Whitmore parties now passed them without stopping.Celeste stood outside the barrier in a carefully chosen gown.I walked in surrounded by people, and the compliments and flattery never stopped. They finally saw what the Whitmore family's so-called old-money status had really been worth all those years. Next to the Vail Group, it counted for nothing. After the signing, I walked out, and my father called after me. "Evelyn."The room went quiet. I motioned to the crowd, and they opened a path."What happened before was our fault. But give your father a chance to make it right."The next day, he came to my office with a lawyer. The Whitmore family was nearly bankrupt, and by then, neither the title of heir nor shares in the family business were worth anything. The only assets I actually took back were the last two properties that had been transferred out of

This time there was nothing on Celeste's face but despair. My father and brothers looked increasingly grim.I sat back in the chair. "You saw for yourselves. It isn't that I won't help. The creditor won't agree. It looks like there won't be any relief from that billion-dollar debt for now."His face changed. He'd been the head of the family for so long that even now, he wanted to pull rank on me as my father."Evelyn, I know now that you're capable. However big Vail gets, you still have Whitmore blood in your veins."Beneath it all was the same old lecture, and it made me sick.I pointed at the door. "Are you finished? Then get out!"My brothers' faces went gray, and they clenched their fists, but neither of them moved. It was the first time I had seen that look on their faces. They were dying to come at me and scream in my face, but now that they knew who I was, they had to hold themselves back.So they did know how to tread carefully when someone else held the power. The Wardens came

My father reacted first, his expression hardening with anger. "Evelyn? What are you doing here?"Spencer took a step forward. "Have you lost your mind? That's the Vail chairman's chair. Get out of it now!"Celeste put a hand over her mouth. "Evelyn, did you sneak in here? This is Vail headquarters. You're going to cause trouble for Dad."My father clearly thought the same thing. He rushed at me to drag me out of the chair! But my assistant stopped him.My assistant addressed me respectfully. "Ms. Vail, the Whitmore family is being disrespectful. Would you like me to have them removed?"My father struggled to get the words out. "What... did you just call her?""This is Ms. Vail, chairman and founder of the Vail Group."I couldn't be bothered to explain. I lifted a hand. "Send them in."A dozen or more Wardens dressed in black rushed in.My father's face changed.Everyone on the East Coast knew the Vail Group had a private security unit that never worked for outsiders. No politician or b
