Chapter 1

“Well, Mr. Valenti? Two choices. That seems fair enough, doesn’t it?”

Soren casually toyed with the gun in his hand.

The agreement he had thrown onto the floor was still lying open at my father’s feet.

The computer screen on the table displayed all of the Valenti family’s accounts.

His greedy gaze settled on Vera, who was huddled beside the sofa.

“Come back to the Greco estate with me and keep me happy, and I might let your family live a little longer.”

He laughed arrogantly and added, “Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.”

Luca, my second brother and the most hot-tempered of the four, roared as he charged forward. “You bastard! In your dreams! Just try laying a hand on her!”

Two of Soren’s men were ready for him and immediately seized Luca by the shoulders from either side, pinning him firmly in place.

Soren did not even raise his eyes as he slowly smoothed a crease from his cuff and walked toward Vera.

As he approached, Vera did not retreat and instead took half a step forward.

She planted herself between Soren and me, shielding me with her own body.

I would have been lying if I said I was not moved, especially when there was not even any blood between us.

But I did not move.

I glanced toward the shadows beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows and counted twelve snipers concealed around the estate.

He had certainly come prepared.

At that moment, all Soren had to do was give the order, and those snipers could kill everyone in the room.

That was why I could not make a reckless move yet, at least not now.

I was the biological daughter the Valenti family had lost many years ago.

During the years I spent on the streets, I had clawed my way out of one pile of bodies after another.

To survive, I learned how to modify firearms, build weapons, forge documents, and reproduce high-end works of art.

Eventually, I became the woman Sicily knew only as C—a name that could silence an entire room.

With my eyes closed, I could strip and reassemble even the most sophisticated sniper rifle within seconds, while the sculptures and paintings I reproduced could fool even the world’s finest authenticators.

Then, during an operation, my vocal cords were severely burned by smoke.

I used the surgery as an opportunity to fake my death, intending to disappear and live under a new identity.

Before I had even managed to settle down, however, my biological father, Massimo Valenti, found me and brought me back to the family.

The doctor had ordered me not to speak for three months after the surgery.

That gave me a convenient reason to remain silent and spared me from whatever probing or scrutiny might otherwise have followed.

By instinct, I quietly observed them, kept my guard up, and habitually searched for their weaknesses.

The problem was that no matter how carefully I watched the Valentis, they never gave me a reason to turn on them.

My father, a Don whose word was law outside the house, secretly wiped away tears because of me when no one was looking; my mother had gone to Florence that week to take care of my grandmother, but before leaving, she had baked an entire box of pastries for me; my brothers constantly searched for unusual gifts just to earn a single smile from me; and Vera had stayed up learning sign language simply so she could communicate with me more easily.

For the first time in my life, no one was forcing me to risk my life in exchange for intelligence.

They protected me simply because I was family.

Aldo, my third brother, had gone to the docks that night to deal with one of our shipping routes, and no one had been able to reach him since.

I should have realized sooner that someone had deliberately gotten him out of the way.

“Mr. Valenti, the Eight Families have joined forces against you, so I’m afraid no one is coming to save you tonight.”

Soren stood in front of my father and lightly tapped his face with the grip of his gun.

“It looks like your days as Don are finally over.”

Behind her back, Vera’s fingers were trembling uncontrollably, but she still signed to me as quickly as she could.

[Don’t be afraid. When you get the chance, run to the hidden passage upstairs.]

The movement caught Soren’s attention.

His gaze passed over Vera’s shoulder and landed on me, curled up in the corner of the sofa.

When he got a clear look at my face, he ran his tongue over his lips and said, “Well, the Valenti family has been hiding quite a beauty.”

A month later, Soren had been completely cast out of the Greco family, and within days, several of his old enemies found him and broke both of his legs. Before long, he lost his mind entirely and spent his days begging in dark, damp street corners while muttering the same sentence over and over again.“C, I’m going to kill you...”As for the Greco family, Vincent knew exactly how to handle the aftermath. He not only returned every piece of territory and every shipping route they had taken, but also handed over thirty percent of the revenue from their docks as compensation. In the end, I agreed to renew our arrangement for another three years, although this time, I alone decided the rules and the price. The gifts sent by the other seven families as apologies piled up outside the gates of the estate.I refused to meet any of them, so they could only leave their gifts behind and depart nervously. My mother returned from Florence overnight and held me in her arms as she cried over everythi

There was a new restraint in the way they looked at me, as if they were suddenly unsure how to act around me.Vera’s eyes were still red, and she gripped the hem of her coat tightly with both hands before taking a small, uneasy step backward. She probably thought that I had become far stronger than she had ever imagined and no longer needed an older sister standing in front of me to protect me.Seeing how tense everyone was, I simply stretched my arms in front of them and let out a lazy yawn. Then I took Vera by the hand and pulled her down onto the sofa with me.Leaning against her side, I murmured weakly, “Vera, talking is exhausting, and dealing with all this trouble is even worse.”“Now that I’m home, can’t I just leave C behind?”I tilted my head toward them, blinked, and softened my voice in a deliberately pleading tone. “Dad, Gabriel, Luca, Aldo, Ezio, and Vera... you’re not going to throw me out just because I happened to be good at fighting when I was away, are you?”The tensi

“This is impossible... How could this happen? I don’t believe it!”Soren pulled out his phone with trembling hands and frantically began calling the uncles and allies who had always treated him like one of their own.“Uncle, it’s me, Soren! You have to help me and send your men over here.”Before he could even finish, an angry voice exploded through the phone. “Soren, you brainless idiot! If you want to get yourself killed, don’t drag the rest of us down with you!”The call was immediately disconnected.Soren quickly dialed another number. “Riccardo, we agreed that we were going to bring down the Valenti family together! We’ve spent so long setting this up, so we can’t just give up now!”The answer he received was just as cold. “Soren, for the sake of what we once had, I’ll give you one piece of advice: you’re on your own now.”He kept dialing numbers like a madman, calling a third person and then a fourth, but each call either went unanswered or ended with someone cursing him out.In

On the other end of the video call, Vincent’s face had turned livid with rage as he shouted, “Get the jet ready right now! I’m going over there myself, and I’ll skin that idiot alive with my own hands!”If there had not been a screen between them, Soren would probably have already taken a slap across the face.I casually rubbed my ear and said, “Vincent, your son really is noisy.”Still being held down on the floor, Soren stared fixedly at the computer screen on the table. The screen displayed the page for transferring the Valenti family’s assets, with every preliminary step already completed and only the final confirmation left. The moment he pressed that button, all of the Valenti family’s funds would be transferred into the Eight Families’ joint account. It was his last chance to turn the situation around.I saw exactly what he was thinking and said, “Let him go and let him press it.”The men released him, and Soren scrambled toward the computer.I walked over and stopped beside him

The moment Vincent gave the order, every man Soren had brought with him threw his weapon to the floor. One after another, they dropped to their knees.Soren was forced down by the men restraining him, and both knees struck the floor hard.He seemed so shaken by what his father had just said that, for a moment, he even forgot to struggle.Gabriel helped my father back to his feet, but disbelief was still written all over his face, and he could barely get the words out when he looked at me.“You... you really are C? The C whose codename alone is enough to scare people?”“How could you...”That was it. There was no hiding it anymore.Feeling slightly guilty, I forced an awkward smile and said, “Ahem, it’s really not as impressive as it sounds.”“I just happen to like tinkering with guns and know a few people, so you really don’t have to react like this.”“Where did you learn to do all that? That was incredible,” Luca asked as he moved closer, unable to contain his curiosity.“Maybe... I w

Soren still refused to believe it, and with his face flushed red, he shouted at the top of his lungs, “It’s fake! That voice has to be synthesized! You think you can scare me with a fake recording of my father?”I ignored him and spoke into the phone. “Vincent, I called because I wanted to let you know in advance that I’m not dead, but I don’t intend to renew our agreement.”The man on the other end immediately panicked. “No, you can’t do that, C! Did we do something wrong? Just tell me what you want, and I’ll give you anything!”“I’m at the Valenti estate right now,” I said. “Massimo Valenti is my father.”The other end of the line suddenly went silent.“As for why I don’t want to renew it,” I continued with a cold laugh, “call your son on video and see for yourself what he’s doing.”It took Vincent a long moment before he finally stammered, “I-I didn’t know. I swear I had no idea the Valentis were your family! If I had known, how could I possibly have let this happen?”“I was a fool,
