Chapter 1

The thugs were scared out of their wits. Their steel pipes clattered to the floor.

My punch had sent Isaac into one of the meat hooks. Half his face was already swelling, and blood ran from the corner of his mouth.

He stared at me, still trying to process what had just happened.

"Who... who are you? You dare lay a hand on me in Blackhaven?"

I didn't bother answering. I walked deeper into the slaughterhouse, one step at a time.

A few thugs scrambled to stop me. I flung them aside, and they staggered into the wall.

Marcella lay beside the pool of blood.

She was painfully thin, almost gaunt, her face black and blue and covered in cuts.

Her eyes were just as blue as they had been five years ago, and she still clung stubbornly to the last of her dignity.

She looked at me, and a spark returned to her clouded eyes.

"Gi... Gian?"

"It's me, Marcella."

Before I could say more, she struggled to get up, but her injured leg gave out and she fell back hard.

The light in her eyes died, and she turned her face away in shame.

"What... what are you doing back here?

"Don't look at me... I look awful."

Five years ago, her father had humiliated me with a suitcase full of cash and forced me to leave. Then I'd vanished.

I thought she would have married someone else by now and settled into the steady life she deserved.

I never imagined she'd end up like this, all to protect a lighter I'd left behind.

My chest tightened at the thought.

I hurried over, crouched in front of her, and reached toward the cuts on her face.

She flinched away from my hand.

"Gian, you shouldn't have come back.

"The Leoni family owns Blackhaven. I don't want to drag you down with me. Get out of here!"

I didn't go. I took her cold hand and rubbed my thumb over the dried blood on the back of it.

"Marcella, I'm back. No one is ever going to mistreat you again.

"Today, no one touches a hair on your head."

Isaac, holding his face, finally got to his feet and staggered a few steps toward me.

"Well, well. I thought you looked familiar. Isn't this the broke little punk who got cash thrown in his face and hopped a freight train out of Blackhaven in the night?"

He circled me. His gaze lingered on my leather jacket, which had no visible logo, and his eyes filled with contempt.

"What happened? Your sugar mama out there get bored of you? So you ran back to beg scraps off this stray?"

The spoiled rich boys behind him burst out laughing.

"Marcella, you're defying Mr. Leoni over a piece of trash like this? I think you've lost your fucking mind."

He walked over to Marcella and bent down, but kept his eyes on me, taunting me.

He stroked her cheek with an insolent finger.

"Well? Have you thought it over? I know a lot more tricks than that loser. I'll make you see stars.

"While I'm in a good mood, I might even let this guy leave Blackhaven in one piece. Otherwise..."

He raised a hand and snapped his fingers. The thugs closed in and surrounded me.

Marcella went white.

"Isaac, come at me! He doesn't know anything. Let him go!"

She struggled to get up and shield me, but a thug kicked her in the stomach. She curled up on the floor.

"Mr. Leoni, if you'll let him go, I... I'll do anything..."

She was about to give up the last of her dignity and give in completely.

I stepped forward, moved her behind me, and looked up at Isaac with a cold smile.

"A few lowlifes like you can't make her bow to anyone."

At last, only the two of us remained in the wrecked slaughterhouse.Marcella stood in the middle of the mess with her back to me, her shoulders trembling."Gian, who are you, really? What happened to you these past five years?"I walked over and stood in front of her.Her eyes were empty and dazed."Five years ago, you vanished. I searched everywhere I could think of, but I couldn't find you."Everyone said you betrayed the family and ran away. I didn't believe them... but I still couldn't find you."I put my hands on her shoulders and spoke softly."It's a long story. But I'm back, Marcella. I came back to reclaim everything that belongs to us."After I left, I planned to find work in Europe. Instead, a group of men grabbed me at the port."The man behind it was the former head of the Raven Group, a reclusive old man with no heirs and little time left."He put countless young men like me through the cruelest tests imaginable. We had nothing and wanted everything. I was the only one wh

Isaac lay on the floor, his shin bent at an unnatural angle and pouring blood. He looked up at me, his lips trembling."I..."Isaac crawled toward me in a panic and slammed his forehead against the floor again and again. It split open and bled, but he didn't dare stop.I watched it all coldly."Did you just say you'd make my woman your plaything?"Isaac trembled with fear. He looked up at me. "Don, I was blind. I judged you by your clothes. I..."I looked down at him as if he were a dead dog."I'm going to make her the most honored woman in the underworld. And a bug like you had the nerve to want her..."I raised my gun and shot Isaac between the legs. He screamed and rolled on the floor in agony. Luna kicked him aside. He hit the wall and passed out.Vito had seen everything, but he didn't dare breathe."Sign."Vito signed every document with shaking hands.Luna took the tablet, contacted lawyers around the world, and had the documents notarized online."Done. As of now, all Leoni fam

The thugs shouted obscenities, murder in their eyes.I glanced at Luna.Luna nodded and spoke into the microphone on her collar. "Clear the room."The ventilation ducts overhead burst open.Dozens of ropes dropped, and a squad of heavily armed mercenaries in tactical masks rappelled down like soldiers falling from the sky.At the same moment, hidden doors around the building were kicked open, and tactical floodlights lit the place like daylight. Before the thugs could react, red laser dots appeared on their foreheads.Their leader, a thug called Leopard, had barely raised his machete when a mercenary shattered his knee with a kick. His scream filled the building. It was a one-sided slaughter. In less than 10 seconds, dozens of hardened gang thugs were pinned in the mud like dead dogs, moaning and unable to fight back.Marcella's aunt crawled under an abandoned truck and huddled there with her arms over her head, barely daring to breathe. Her uncle slid down the wall in a dead faint, hi

"The consolidation of every underworld faction in Blackhaven is complete. The Butcher you mentioned has voluntarily retired."We now have effective control of every Leoni asset."She paused, then looked up at me with fierce intensity."Sign this authorization, and within the hour the Leoni family will vanish from the face of the earth."I gave Isaac a cold smile. All the color drained from his face.Luna's arrival and her news silenced everyone in the slaughterhouse.Marcella covered her mouth and stared at me in disbelief.Marcella's aunt and uncle collapsed to their knees in the blood.Isaac's lackeys stood stunned, then stumbled backward, knocking over the junk behind them.Isaac lunged forward and grabbed Luna by the collar of her coat."What fucking movie set did you wander off from? Nice acting for an extra!"But you dare run a scam on the Leoni family, on Leoni territory!"Don't think I won't make one call and put every one of you at the bottom of the Hudson!"Luna glanced at he

Marcella's brief hope vanished, and she sagged against me.My expression hardened. I said nothing, only looked down and sent another message."If they want bullets to do the talking, buy Blackhaven's entire underworld."Isaac didn't notice. He thought he had won again, and strolled over to me."Gian, you did come up with thirty million. I'll admit you've got something."Too bad. In Blackhaven, money alone doesn't cut it. You have to live long enough to spend it."He picked up the agreement from the floor and flung it in Marcella's face triumphantly."Marcella, this is your last chance."Sign this, sell yourself to me, and I'll clean up the Franco family's mess. Then you'll be mine."Otherwise, one call from me and you two dogs end up dead in the street, or rotting in a cell for life."Her uncle grabbed a pen and forced it into Marcella's hand."Marcella, what good is his money? It's all come to nothing. He's still useless!"Marcella's aunt clutched her hand, weeping."Marcella, I'm beg

Isaac stood holding the phone, his smile frozen."Dad, what did you say?"Vito Leoni's voice was shaking."Every one of our docks has been seized. Every shipping partner cut us off at the same time, without consulting us!"Our territory is in chaos! If you, you wretch, didn't cause some catastrophe out there, what else could explain it?"Isaac glanced around the room and fought to steady his shaking hands. "Dad, I didn't provoke anyone. I'm just at the Franco family's old slaughterhouse, teaching that Gian a lesson.""Gian? Which Gian?"Isaac pressed a hand to his chest to steady his breathing."Marcella Franco's shameless ex-boyfriend."Vito exploded."Bullshit! Whoever this is can mobilize the entire East Coast underworld in an instant and tear our whole network apart. He's a fucking heavyweight!"You wretch, you've crossed someone you should never have messed with!"After the call ended, everyone looked at Isaac, unsure what to think.Antonelli hurried over and murmured, "Don't pani
