THIRD WEDDING, RIGHT GROOM

PART ONE: THE ALTAR

CHAPTER 1: THE THIRD TIME

"Miles Morretti, do you take Lila Clement to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

Miles opened his mouth to answer.

The chapel doors banged open behind us.

Two hundred heads turned at once. I didn't have to. I knew the sound of that door. I'd heard it twice before, at two other weddings, in two other white dresses.

The first time, a wedding coordinator had knocked on the bridal suite fifteen minutes before the ceremony. Valeria had fallen. There was blood. She was alone at the hospital. It had turned out to be a paper cut.

The second time, I'd made it halfway down the aisle on my father's arm before a waiter whispered in Miles's ear. Valeria was on a hotel balcony, threatening to jump. Miles had turned to two hundred guests, said the wedding is canceled, and run.

This was the third time. I'd known it was coming from the moment the hinges hit the wall.

"Mr. Morretti!" His assistant, Paul, came down the aisle at a half-run, tie crooked, face gray. "Sir, I'm sorry. We have an urgent situation."

Miles's hands were still holding mine. I felt the exact moment they changed—the fingers going loose, the pulse jumping under my thumb. When I looked up, his face was already doing what it always did: concern first, then panic, then that strange guilt that never seemed to be aimed at me.

"What is it?" he asked.

Paul's eyes flicked to me and away. "It's Miss Valeria, sir. She's packed her bags. She's on her way to the airport."

He was holding his phone out in front of him, and a thin, broken voice was coming out of the speaker loud enough that the first three rows could hear it.

"—is he there? Paul, is he there? Tell him I'm at the terminal. Tell him I'm sorry. I just can't watch it, I can't—"

Paul fumbled to take it off speaker. The sobbing went on, smaller and tinnier, against his ear.

"The airport?"

"She says she can't bear to watch you get married. She says she's leaving the country and she isn't coming back. She says—" He swallowed. "She says she'll have nothing left here once you abandon her."

Abandon her. As if marrying me were a crime committed against his stepsister.

Miles let go of my left hand. He started to turn.

I caught his wrist.

I held on hard enough that my knuckles went white, hard enough that I could feel his heartbeat racing under my fingers, and I kept my voice low, for him only. "Don't."

"Lila—"

"Don't you dare leave me here again."

He looked down at me, and for a second I saw it: real pain in his brown eyes, real conflict. Three years ago, that look would have been enough. I'd have let go and told him I understood.

"Lila, I'm sorry. I have to—"

"If you walk out that door," I said, and my voice rose no matter how hard I tried to hold it down, "I will never forgive you. Do you understand me, Miles? Never. This is your last chance."

Somewhere in the front row, my mother gasped.

"Valeria has no one else." Miles said it gently, the way you explain something to a child. "You know that. Our parents died six years ago. It's been just the two of us since then. I promised my father before he died that I'd take care of her."

"What about me?" It came out as a whisper. "What about the promises you were about to make to me?"

He touched my face with his free hand. I hated how my body still leaned into it.

"You should be more magnanimous, Lila." His thumb brushed my cheek. "She's going to be your sister-in-law. Your family. You should care about her too. I'll make this up to you. We'll have a bigger wedding. A better one. Whatever you want. I'll make sure Valeria apologizes for all of this. But right now, she needs me."

"She always needs you."

"Lila—"

"Every time. Every single time I put on a white dress."

He pulled his wrist free.

He walked back down the aisle, his dress shoes clicking on the marble, Paul hurrying behind him. He didn't run, the way he had the second time. He walked like a man doing something difficult and noble. The doors swung shut behind him, and the sound echoed off the stone walls for a long time.

The whispers started at the back of the chapel and rolled forward.

"Poor thing."

"Can you believe this?"

"Three times. That's not normal."

"That sister has him wrapped around her finger."

"She should have left him after the second time."

"Why does she keep trying?"

I stood at the altar in a silk gown I'd spent four months choosing, holding a bouquet of white peonies, and I listened to two hundred people say out loud the things I'd been refusing to say to myself.

Something in my chest gave way, the last support of a structure that had been cracking for years.

Reverend Hollis cleared his throat behind me. "Miss Clement. Would you like me to make an announcement?"

"Give me a minute."

"Of course. Take all the time—"

"One minute," I said.

My mother was crying into my father's shoulder. My father was staring at the doors Miles had walked through with an expression I'd only seen on him once before, when a business partner had embezzled from him and lied about it to his face. Miles's groomsmen were looking at their shoes.

And Jessica, my maid of honor, was already halfway up the steps toward me in her emerald gown.

"Lila." She grabbed both my hands. "Honey. Look at me. Do you want me to get you out of here? There's a back door by the vestry. I'll get the car—"

"Do you have my phone?"

She blinked. "What?"

"My phone, Jess. You said you'd hold it during the ceremony."

"Lila, if you're about to call him—"

"I'm not calling Miles."

She stared at me. Then she reached into the hidden pocket of her gown, pulled out my phone, and put it in my hand.

I unlocked it. My thumb was shaking. I scrolled past Miles's name at the top of my favorites, past my mother, past my father, to the name I'd been carrying in my head since two o'clock that morning, when a voice on the phone had said If he doesn't show, I'll be there. You just have to call.

Alexander Calvert.

I pressed call.

  • Third Wedding, Right Groom    CHAPTER 45: NEW BEGINNINGS

Three years after our wedding day, Alexander and I stood in what would become the nursery."So we're really doing this?" he asked, his hand warm in mine as we surveyed the empty room."We're really doing this," I confirmed, feeling a flutter of nervous excitement. "Turning your home office into a nursery. Buying tiny clothes and researching cribs. Becoming parents.""Our home office," he corrected gently. "This has been our home for three years, Lila. Not mine. Ours."He was right. The villa had transformed from Alexander's bachelor pad into our shared space. My books filled the shelves. My coffee mug had a permanent spot in the kitchen. My color choices influenced the décor. It was ours, completely. And now we were making room for more.We weren't pregnant yet—just preparing, planning, getting ready for this next chapter. But the decision had been made, and with it came a sense of possibility that felt both terrifying and exhilarating."I was thinking midnight blue for the walls," I

  • Third Wedding, Right Groom    CHAPTER 44: FULL CIRCLE

Two and a half years after the foundation launched, I ran into Miles at a coffee shop. Not the café where Alexander and I used to meet, thankfully. A new place I'd discovered near the foundation's office, somewhere that had no history, no memories. I was picking up lattes for a staff meeting when I heard a familiar voice behind me."Lila?"I turned and saw him. Miles looked different—healthier, calmer, more grounded than I'd ever seen him. He wore jeans and a casual shirt, carried a well-worn backpack, and looked more like a grad student than a former CEO."Miles," I said, keeping my voice neutral. "Hi.""Hi," he said, then seemed at a loss for what to say next. We stood there awkwardly, other customers navigating around us. "I was just—I heard you'd opened a foundation office in this area. I wasn't looking for you or anything. I just moved nearby and—" He stopped. "Sorry. I'm rambling.""It's okay," I said. "How are you?""Good," he said, and something in his voice made me believe hi

  • Third Wedding, Right Groom    CHAPTER 43: THE FOUNDATION THRIVES

One year after launch, The Clement Foundation for Healthy Relationships was featured in a major profile in Psychology Today."This is incredible," Jessica said, reading the article on her phone during our weekly coffee date. "'Lila Calvert is redefining how we think about relationship abuse by highlighting the emotional manipulation that doesn't leave visible scars.' They're calling you a pioneer in the field.""That feels excessive," I said, but I couldn't help smiling. The foundation had grown beyond my wildest expectations. What had started as a personal project born from pain had become a legitimate organization helping thousands of people. We'd expanded from our initial educational materials to offering support groups, both in-person and virtual. Women—and some men—who were in relationships where they felt constantly diminished, constantly accommodating, constantly second choice, now had a place to share their experiences without judgment."The thing that gets me," one woman said

  • Third Wedding, Right Groom    CHAPTER 42: AFTERMATH AND HEALING

The psychiatric evaluation concluded that Valeria was not competent to stand trial."She's been diagnosed with severe attachment disorder, major depressive disorder, and shows signs of delusional thinking," our lawyer explained over the phone. "The court has ordered her committed to a state psychiatric facility for treatment. She'll remain there until doctors determine she's no longer a danger to herself or others.""How long will that be?" I asked."Minimum eighteen months. Potentially longer depending on her progress." He paused. "Mrs. Calvert, she won't be able to contact you. She won't be released without extensive evaluation. You're safe."Safe. The word felt foreign. I'd spent months feeling unsafe, looking over my shoulder, jumping at every unexpected sound. Could I really just... relax now?The nightmares started two weeks after the attack.I'd dream I was back in the garden, but this time security didn't come. This time, Alexander didn't arrive. This time, it was just me and

  • Third Wedding, Right Groom    CHAPTER 41: THE BREAKING POINT

It happened on a Saturday afternoon.Alexander had a last-minute emergency client call—something about the Chen Corporation deal threatening to fall apart. I'd encouraged him to take it, assured him I'd be fine for a few hours. We had security outside. The restraining order was in place. Valeria's court date was Monday. Just two more days.I should have been more careful.I was in the garden, working on the flower beds. It was therapeutic, grounding, something that helped quiet my anxious mind. I'd been out there for maybe twenty minutes when I heard the gate open. Not the front gate—the side gate that led from the neighbor's property to ours. The gate was supposed to be locked, but sometimes didn't latch properly.I looked up and saw her.Valeria looked worse than she had in the parking garage. Wild-eyed, unkempt, her clothes stained and wrinkled. But what made my blood freeze was what she was holding—a knife from our own outdoor kitchen, where we sometimes grilled. She must have tak

  • Third Wedding, Right Groom    CHAPTER 40: THE ESCALATION

Valeria was released on bail pending her court date."What?" I said when Alexander told me. "How is that even possible? She threatened me directly. In front of witnesses.""Her lawyer argued she wasn't a flight risk, that she had no prior criminal record, and that her threats were born of emotional distress, not genuine intent to harm." Alexander's voice was tight with frustration. "The judge granted bail with conditions—she has to wear an ankle monitor, she can't come within 500 feet of you or our home or your workplace, and she has to check in with a court officer daily.""That doesn't make me feel safe," I said."I know. We're keeping the security detail. And the restraining order is officially in effect. If she violates it, she goes straight to jail."For two weeks, Valeria stayed away. The ankle monitor kept her away from our home and my office. The calls and texts stopped. I started to relax, to believe that maybe the arrest had scared her into compliance.I should have known be

The emergency room had been busy, full of people with actual emergencies. We'd found Valeria sitting in a chair in the waiting area, perfectly calm, with a small white bandage on her index finger. She wasn't in a hospital bed. She wasn't being attended to by doctors. She was sitting there, scrollin
