Chapter 1

I still stopped by the grocery store the next day after work. I pushed the shopping cart as I slowly made my way through the aisles, grabbing the ingredients that I needed to prepare a meal as always.

When I passed by the candle rack, I hesitated. In the end, I still grabbed a box.

Truth be told, I didn't have to celebrate my birthday. It was just that when I was 24, my boyfriend, Thomas Sheridan, had shown up outside my office with a bouquet of flowers. He sounded utterly serious when he said, "I'll celebrate your birthday with you every year from now on."

I had believed him at that time.

After getting home, I bustled about in the kitchen until the sun went down. I placed the cake in the middle of the dining table. The entire apartment seemed a little more lively after I lit the candle.

Then, I sat down and waited. I continued waiting even as the sky beyond the window gradually turned from light to dark.

It was almost 8:00 pm when I finally received a message in the group chat.

"Almost home. There's traffic downstairs," Thomas wrote.

I stared at the message for a few seconds before placing my fork down. I didn't mind waiting a little longer since Thomas said that he was almost home.

However, there were no sounds of movement beyond the front door even after ten minutes had passed.

I looked down and scrolled through my phone. The first thing I came across was my best friend Lydia Wakeford's new post on her social media account.

There were two movie tickets in the photo. The caption read, "Entered the wrong hall and accidentally watched a romance flick. But it was good! Five stars and highly recommended."

My fingers slowly turned cold as I read the caption.

Although Thomas was so against the idea of watching a romance movie with me, he was more than willing to do so with Lydia.

I barked out a self-deprecating laugh and placed my phone on the table. I then looked down and cut the cake. I used a tissue to wipe the cream that got smudged on my fingers before picking up my fork and digging into the dishes on the table that had already gone cold by myself.

The front door finally swung open at around 9:00 pm.

Thomas walked into the apartment with Lydia trailing behind him with a big smile, holding a cup of bubble tea and some movie merchandise.

His expression darkened slightly when he realized that I had already started eating. "Why did you start eating by yourself?" he asked.

I looked up at him and retorted, "You told me that you were already downstairs an hour ago."

Thomas tossed his keys on the cabinet and said lightly, "There was a traffic jam. It's perfectly normal for us to be a little late."

"He's right," Lydia chimed in with a smile. "We weren't late on purpose."

As I looked between the cup of bubble tea that she was holding and the candle that had nearly burned out on the table, I suddenly lost the energy to even be angry at them.

"Do you remember what day it is today?" I asked Thomas.

He frowned. It seemed as if he had truly forgotten. However, a few minutes later, his expression stiffened when he finally recalled what day it was—my birthday, the same day that he had confessed to me years ago.

"Do you still remember what you told me?" I asked quietly as I looked at him.

Thomas said nothing.

Noticing that something was amiss, Lydia hastily tried to smooth things over. "It probably slipped Thomas' mind because work's been crazy recently. The two of you have been together for so long. He definitely didn't mean to forget!"

I slowly turned to look at her. "Is that so?"

Lydia was stunned.

"How was the romance flick?" I asked softly.

Silence descended upon the living room the moment the words left my lips. Thomas' face twisted while Lydia's smile stiffened.

The organizing team invited me to attend a special screening that night after the event wrapped up.There weren't that many people at the late-night screening.I grabbed a ticket and entered the hall. I found a seat in the middle and sat down. Some of the lights in the hall were still switched on. Some of the people in the front rows were already eating popcorn, but the seat beside me remained empty. One minute before the movie started, I heard the sounds of footsteps coming from the aisle.I looked up and saw Thomas entering the hall. He didn't sit next to me. Instead, he stood in the aisle and asked in a low voice, "Can I say a few last words to you?"I stared at him for a couple of seconds before nodding.Thomas stood there. He looked as if he had prepared for this moment for a long time, but when he finally started speaking, his voice sounded hoarse."In the past year, I kept wondering if everything would be different if I had given my login details to you that day. I returned to the country a year later after my overseas project wrapped up.Coincidentally, the temperature in Jornhelm was dropping when the plane touched down. A gust of wind blew into my face when the airport door slid open. My heart was calm even as I wrapped my coat tighter around myself. In the past year, I had delivered desirable results for the core phase of the project and also passed the company's internal evaluation.During my first week back, my company organized an industry networking event. The location was at a film culture center.I was briefly stunned when I heard where the event was taking place.…I headed toward the venue with my team on the day of the event.Several movie posters were displayed in the main hall. A huge screen was installed at the end of the hallway, playing a series of clips from classic suspense thrillers. As I walked past the screen, a clip from the movie that prompted me to ask Thomas to share his streaming service subscription with me

Thomas and Lydia got into a huge argument after he returned to the country. It didn't take long for the news of their fallout to spread among their friends.Later, someone told me that Lydia lost her mind when she found out that Thomas had flown out of the country to meet me. She made a beeline to his home and demanded answers from him the moment she stepped through the door, asking him if he couldn't give up on me.Thomas didn't deny her accusations and admitted that he regretted his actions. His words tore down the last layer of lies that Lydia had been using to fool herself. She stood in the living room and stared at him for a long time before suddenly bursting into laughter."Regret?" she spat. "The one who went to the movies with you for the last few years was me. The one who discussed those movies and chatted with you late into the night was me. The one who traveled abroad to watch competitions with you was also me."You told me that you had run out of topics to talk about w

The overseas project proceeded more smoothly than expected. The first trial runs were resounding successes, prompting the client to increase the budget. The entire team was buried to their elbows in work.Emily wanted to push me forward. She brought me to meet clients and taught me how to reject people at the discussion table. In the past, I would always prioritize other people's feelings over my own. Only later did I learn that people wouldn't cherish you just because you were willing to concede to them. On the contrary, if you kept letting them have their way, they would start thinking that you should always yield to them.I slowly started to change. Just when I thought that I had completely separated myself from my past, Thomas appeared again. That night, my colleagues and I walked out of the office together after wrapping up a meeting.Powerful winds billowed past us. When I tugged my scarf higher over my face, I looked up and saw someone standing in front of me.It was Thoma

It didn't take long for me to complete the necessary procedures to join the overseas project. I practically had no time to think about anything else in the next few days. When I landed in that foreign country, I felt as if something had disappeared from my heart as I stood outside the airport, wheeling two suitcases behind me.Even the air felt different. Not only were the streets and language unfamiliar, but the sky also seemed a little different when I tilted my head back to look at it.Emily had arrived half an hour before me and was already waiting for me outside the airport.I slowly let out the breath that I had been holding when I saw her waving at me. At least I wasn't alone.…I had a tough time in the beginning. The project was brand new, the local team and our team had different ways of communicating, and the client's demands kept increasing.I joined meetings during the day and continued working even after returning to my apartment at night, often working until the

  • Third-Wheeling My Own Relationship   Chapter 5

I returned to the apartment three days after I was discharged from the hospital, wanting to grab the last documents and clothes that I had left behind. I had just opened my suitcase when I heard the door creak open.Thomas had returned. He froze in place when he saw me, standing rooted at the door."Riley," he called.I didn't respond. Instead, I just kept my head down and continued stacking my clothes.Thomas approached me. He lowered his voice and said, "I dropped by your office to look for you. Your colleagues informed me that you've been preparing to leave for an overseas project recently."I hummed in response as I placed my passport and folders into my bag, not even bothering to look up at him.Seeing how calm I was, Thomas finally started panicking. "Are you really planning to leave?"I glanced at him as I closed the drawer. "I've completed all the procedures," I said.Thomas stared at me. It was as if he finally believed that I was leaving at that moment. In the past,
