Chapter 1

Sera

The words 'I'm getting married again' shouldn't have been able to break a heart that had already shattered two years ago.

When your husband tells you he’s getting married again the best thing you can do for yourself isn’t to cry. But I stooped lower than that.

Julian walked in without looking at me. He set a thick folder down on the table hard enough. Then he dropped a glossy press sheet right on top of it.

“Sign it,” he said. “Now.”

I looked at the folder. Then I looked at him. His tie was perfect. His shirt was the kind of white that never wrinkled. His face was the same closed-off mask he had worn every day for three years.

“I see,” I said.

He waited. I could feel him waiting for the tears or the shouting or the usual desperate questions. I did not give him any of them. I reached for the folder, opened it, and flipped through the pages.

Divorce decree. Settlement offer. Non-disclosure. Everything already filled in with my name in neat black print. At the bottom of the settlement page there was a number that would have made most people sit down hard. Multi-million. Enough to buy a quiet life somewhere far from this house and his mother and all the people who still called me the temporary wife behind my back.

I closed the folder again and set it aside.

Julian’s eyes narrowed. “You’re not going to argue?”

“No.”

“You’re not going to…”

“No.”

He leaned back in the chair and studied me like I had grown a second head. “Three years and this is how you react. I expected more of a show, Seraphina. You always were good at playing the quiet little victim.”

I picked up my coffee and took a sip. It had gone cold. “You made it clear from the start that my permission was never required for anything. Including this.”

He almost smiled. Almost. “Finally something we agree on. I married you because the old man left me no choice because you were his best friend's daughter. You knew that. Everyone knew that. You got the name and the house and the status. I got the company. Fair trade. Now the trade is over. Evelyn and I have waited long enough.”

I set the cup down carefully. My hands stayed steady. Inside my chest something tight and cold shifted but I did not let it reach my face. He believed I had married him for the money and the last name. He had believed it every day since the wedding. I had never bothered correcting him. What was the point? He would not have listened. He still would not listen.

“I’m not taking the settlement,” I said.

The silence that followed was thick. Julian’s fingers tapped once against the table. “Say that again.”

“I’m not taking the money. I don’t want it.”

He laughed. It was short and sharp and completely without humor. “You’re refusing eight figures because you’re sentimental? Or because you think you can still play some angle?”

“Neither.”

“Then what exactly do you want, Seraphina? Because this…” he flicked the press sheet with one finger “ is happening. The engagement party is already booked. The press release goes out this afternoon whether you sign or not. Your signature is a formality. Nothing more.”

I met his eyes. They were the same dark color they had always been. Cold. Distant. Certain he already knew every move I might make.

“Thirty days,” I said.

He blinked. “What?”

“Give me thirty days as your real wife. Not the woman who lives in the east wing and eats breakfast alone. Not the stranger you ignore at parties. Thirty days of an actual marriage. You come home every night. You take me to the public events. You let me stand next to you as your wife instead of pretending I do not exist. You stop treating me like an unwanted piece of furniture someone left in the corner. You give this one genuine chance. After the thirty days are up I will sign every paper you put in front of me and I will not fight you. I will disappear. Clean and quietly. No scenes.”

Julian stared at me for a long moment. Then he laughed again, louder this time. He pushed his chair back and stood, walking a slow circle around the table like he needed the movement to process what he had just heard.

“You have got to be kidding me,” he said. “This is the desperate little plan? Thirty days of playing house so you can somehow make me fall for you? Seraphina, I have spent three years not caring. Another month will not change that.”

“I am not asking you to fall for me.”

“Then what are you asking?”

“Exactly what I said. Come home at night. Attend the events with me. Treat me like I belong in the same room as you for once. That is all.”

He stopped behind my chair. I could feel him standing there. I did not turn around.

“You want me in your bed too?” His voice dropped lower. “Is that part of the genuine chance? You think if I sleep with you a few times the money will suddenly matter less and I will call off the engagement?”

I kept my eyes on the table. “If that is what a real marriage includes then yes. One month. One month of you actually being present.”

He moved back into my line of sight and leaned both hands on the table. “You are serious.”

“I am.”

“And if I say no and just force the divorce through anyway?”

“Then I walk out today with nothing and you still get your engagement. But you have a name for yourself and you don’t want to ruin it.”

“How dare you…?!”

He watched me. The cold stare was back in his face. He was trying to figure out the angle. He was certain there was one. In his mind I was still the girl who had married up and was now scrambling to keep the lifestyle. He had never once considered that I might have a reason that had nothing to do with him or his money.

“Thirty days, Seraphina. But if you fail to make me care, you leave with nothing.”

I took the pen. My hand did not shake. I signed my name under his and dated it. Then I set the pen down and looked up at him.

“Deal.”

Chapter 33SeraI eased the bedroom door open with the notebook pressed flat against my ribs under my cardigan. The lamp was off. The curtains were open, and a little grey light from the courtyard came through the window and lay across the end of the bed. The sheets were pulled straight. His side was empty.I let out a breath. Maybe he was still in his study. Maybe I had a few minutes to hide it properly before..."Where were you?"I nearly dropped it.Julian was sitting in the armchair by the window. I hadn't seen him because the chair was turned half away from the door and the shadows there were deep. He was still dressed in the shirt he'd worn at dinner, the sleeves pushed up, his elbows resting on his knees and his hands loosely clasped. He didn't get up. He didn't turn on the lamp. He just sat there in the dark and waited.I pressed my arm tighter against my side. There was a lie ready on my tongue. A walk. The kitchen. Couldn't sleep. It would have been so easy.I was so tired o

Chapter 32Cassian"It's not what you think," she said. She said it too fast. Her hands were wrapped around the notebook so tightly that her knuckles had gone white, and she was holding it against her chest the same way she'd held my letter two nights ago, like it was something alive that might get away from her."They're just notes," she went on. "About my health. My doctor wanted me to keep track of some things. It's private, Cass, it's nothing to do with Julian or the thirty days or...""Window opens day seven," I said quietly. "Best odds day eight. If not this cycle, next window falls too close to day thirty. Can't count on him still being in my bed by then."She stopped talking.I hadn't meant to memorize it. I'd only read the notebook once, sitting on the edge of my mother's desk with the door half open, listening for her car in the drive. But some lines you only have to read once. That one had gone into me like a splinter and stayed.Sera stared at me across the firelight. Her

Chapter 31Sera"Just old notes," Julian repeated slowly. He was still holding my wrist. Not hard. His thumb rested over the place where my pulse was racing, and I knew he could feel it, the way it hammered against his skin like something trying to get out."Yes," I said. "Nothing important."He looked at me for a long moment. I had seen that look across boardroom tables. It was the look he gave people when he already knew the answer and was waiting to see whether they'd be honest enough to give it to him themselves.I didn't give it to him.He let go of my wrist."All right," he said. That was all. Two words, quiet and even. He didn't push. He didn't ask what kind of notes, or why I'd turned a drawer upside down over the rug for something that didn't matter. He just stepped back and looked at the mess I'd made on the floor, the hand cream and the paperback and the hairbrush scattered across the carpet, and then he looked at me again, and something in his eyes closed very quietly, lik

  • Thirty Days Before I leave   Chapter 30

Chapter 30JulianMarcus was still talking in my ear.I could hear his voice, small and tinny, saying something about a ferry route and a harbor master's records and a name he wanted to check before he was sure. I didn't take in a single word of it. I was standing in the boathouse doorway with the phone pressed to my ear, and at the end of the dock, with the wind whipping her hair across her face, Lucien Hale had his hand on my wife's cheek and his mouth on hers.It was brief. It barely lasted a second. He pulled back almost as soon as he'd leaned in.But she hadn't moved. That was what I saw, more clearly than anything. Not the kiss itself, but the moment before it. He'd leaned in slowly, so slowly that a child could have stepped away, and she'd stood there in the scarf he had wrapped around her neck and let him. Then her eyes found mine over his shoulder, and I watched every bit of color leave her face."Julian? Are you still there?""I'll call you back," I said, and ended the call.

  • Thirty Days Before I leave   Chapter 29

Chapter 29SeraI almost put it in my bag.The thought came to me clearly and calmly while I stood there holding it against my chest. I could take it home. I could open it alone in the sewing room with the door locked, where nobody could watch my face while I read whatever my father had needed to say to me. That was what the old Sera would have done. She'd have folded it away and waited for a private moment, the way she'd folded away every feeling she'd had for three years. But I had already waited eleven years. I had spent eleven years thinking my father had simply walked out of my life one ordinary morning and decided not to come back. I couldn't wait the forty minutes it would take to drive home.I sat down at the wooden table by the window.Neither of them said anything. Julian pulled out the chair beside me and sat, close enough that I could feel him there without him touching me. Lucien stayed standing on the other side of the table with his hands in his coat pockets, watching t

  • Thirty Days Before I leave   Chapter 28

Chapter 28 Julian I wasn't nervous about what Lucien might show us. Whatever my grandfather had done, I had already started to make my peace with the fact that it was going to be ugly. What I was dreading was something smaller and much harder to admit.I was dreading watching her see him.I was dreading the moment she got out of this car and walked toward another man who had been planning to meet her alone, and I would find out from her face what he was to her. Whether her eyes changed when she saw him. Whether she smiled at him the way she'd smiled at me in the kitchen this morning.I'd seen that photograph of her in the gallery, laughing up at him. I'd seen it on my bed.I didn't want to see it in person. The boathouse appeared around a bend in the road. It was old and weathered, grey timber gone silver with age, half hidden by willows at the edge of the water. A long wooden dock ran out into the river behind it. A black car was parked under the trees. And standing at the end of t
