Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
Karen flew into a rage right then and there, convinced I had killed her first love.

I explained countless times that I had nothing to do with it, but she never believed me again.

From then on, she hated me to the bone, and her attitude toward me changed completely.

Not only did she lash out at me with cruel words, she openly kept Cade Morrow, her first love's look-alike, by her side. To protect her reputation, she told everyone he was just her male best friend.

On top of that, she regularly amused herself by toying with me. Pranks like today's had played out again and again over our five years of marriage.

I had long since grown used to their mockery. I kept my head down, said nothing, and quietly endured her scolding.

Fresh out of the fire, I was covered in soot and grime, and my clothes were torn in several places. I was a complete mess.

Some of Karen's friends couldn't stand it anymore and draped a jacket over my shoulders.

I had barely croaked out a thank-you through my parched throat when Cade strode over, ripped the jacket off me, and threw it aside. He jabbed a finger at me and shouted, "Todd, you killed your mother, and you killed Karen's true love.

"You have two lives on your hands. You don't deserve a comfortable life. You're going to walk all the way home and take every sneer and dirty look people throw at you."

Without thinking, I looked at Karen.

Karen didn't say a word. Her silence said she approved of what Cade was doing.

I smiled bitterly.

My mother died giving birth to me. My father and older brother had always believed I killed her, and they were harsh on me from the time I was little. If I wasn't going without food or decent clothes, I was being berated or beaten.

But Karen had always quietly reached out to help me. She even comforted me. "Life and death are in fate's hands. Your mom's death isn't your fault, so don't let what other people say get to you."

Now, though, she let Cade say these things without stopping him. Wasn't that the same as agreeing with everyone else that it was all my fault?

My father and brother loathed me, and now even Karen, the only light in my life, hated me to the bone.

I just couldn't understand it. I had been careful about every word and every move since I was a child. Where exactly had I gone wrong?

A wave of pain surged through me, and I shook my head.

Forget it. There was no point thinking about it anymore.

I had stage four lung cancer anyway. I didn't have many days left.

Once I was dead, they'd probably feel they had finally gotten their revenge.

I walked on in silence while Cade gleefully filmed me from behind.

A flicker of reluctance crossed Karen's eyes, and she waved a hand to stop him. "Enough. He's my husband on paper, at least. If someone passing by records this and posts it online, it'll hurt my family's reputation."

After all, she had built a public image as the perfect, devoted wife. If word got out that she was mistreating her husband, people would talk.

She warned everyone there not to breathe a word about what had happened today.

Then she drove me home and shoved me out of the car.

Without looking back, she stomped on the gas and sped off.

The household staff snickered at the sight. They muttered that I was an imposter living in a home that wasn't mine and had brought all this on myself. Not a single one of them dared to help me.

I had gone numb a long time ago. I limped back to my bedroom.

I showered and changed. Exhausted after the long day, I drifted off to sleep.

I didn't know how much time had passed.

Suddenly, a loud crash rang out.

Someone had kicked my bedroom door wide open.

Cade stormed in, furious, and ordered the bodyguards to drag me out of bed and onto the floor. Then he slapped me hard across the face, again and again.

Through the ringing in my ears, I heard him roar, "Todd, I underestimated you! How dare you post what happened online, stir up public outrage, and ruin Karen's reputation?!"

[Man, you had me look into Kayce's death. I found out everything, and I already sent the files to Karen.][Now pay me the rest of my fee. Don't play dead on me!]Karen froze.A seed of doubt took root in her mind."Why would Todd investigate Kayce's death? Could it be..."Cade's face went white. He never imagined he had overlooked this, though he had already paid off the detective. With me dead too, there was no one left who could prove anything, so he wasn't worried. He rushed to explain. "Todd must have hired someone to put on this act. I can't believe he's still trying to talk his way out of it, even after he's dead."Cade expected Karen to do what she always did and lash out at me the moment she heard that. But this time, she didn't answer him. Instead, she dialed the number.Cade's heart leapt into his throat.Luckily, he had acted fast and bought off the detective long ago.Karen called several times in a row, but no one picked up.I sighed.I thought Karen would lea

I would never be able to go to the press conference with her to set the record straight. When I still didn't respond, Karen kicked me even harder. My body rolled over. When she saw my face, she froze in place, then screamed and threw herself down beside me.She realized my body had already gone stiff and immediately called an ambulance to rush me to the hospital. She waited anxiously outside, only for the doctor to tell her I had been dead for days.Karen stood there in a daze. Counting back, she realized it had happened on the very day the maid came to warn her.She stumbled, and only Cade catching her arm in time kept her from falling. But her face was still ashen, her expression as lifeless as stagnant water. "So I was wrong about her. If I had listened to her that day and rushed to his room to get Todd to the hospital, would he still be all right?"Karen choked out her regret, and a single tear slid from the corner of her eye.The doctor sighed. "It was only a matter of ti

When the news broke, Karen's staff were all panicking, but she didn't seem to care. "What are you afraid of? Let them keep making noise."In a little while, I'll hold a press conference with Todd."We'll say we were just filming skits for fun, and the rumors will fall apart on their own."The louder they get now, the more free publicity they're giving us."She turned to Cade. "It's about time. We can let Todd out. Once he's had a while to recover, he can help us clean up this mess."Everyone froze, too afraid to say a word.Cade's eyes darted around. He didn't dare frame me again now. It would be far too obvious.Sooner or later, the news of my death would get out. When it did, it would be bad for him if Karen started losing faith in him.Even a single lie would plant a thorn in Karen's heart, and he'd never get back the trust she had in him now.He didn't dare take that step, so all he could do was sigh. "You've kept him locked up for so many days. I'm worried that if I go,

"What happened?"She was about to rush off to check on me when Cade caught her hand and sighed. "Karen, looks like you were too nice to him last time. Now he thinks that as long as he's sick, you'll give him extra attention."If you ask me, he's faking it to get you to notice him."Karen raised an eyebrow and slowly sat back down. "He never learns. He's trying to stir up trouble again!"The maid froze, then hurried to explain. "No, I really saw him lying on the floor. I couldn't wake him up no matter how many times I called him. Please, send someone to check on him."She begged through her tears.I sighed. I had once helped her when she was being picked on.I never expected that the girl who always seemed so distant would plead for me like this once something happened to me.Karen seemed a little moved and thought about going to take a look. But Cade turned his attention to the girl. "I remember you. Every time you got yelled at, Todd stood up for you."I've seen you go in an

It had the name "Todd Pittman" on it.She raised an eyebrow, signed for it, and tossed it aside. The courier quickly spoke up. "Ms. Quinn, the sender said this is very important. You need to open it right away, as soon as you receive it."Karen was annoyed, but with an outsider there, she held her tongue. She impatiently tore open the envelope to look inside.Seeing this, the courier let out a sigh of relief and pulled out a phone to report that the job was done. The moment Karen saw what was inside, she froze, a flicker of confusion deep in her eyes. "Why would he send me this?"When I saw Karen, I was a little confused too.Wasn't I locked in confinement? When had they let me out? Why couldn't I remember any of it?Before I could dwell on it, I heard Karen murmur to herself, and I was surprised. Now that she had seen the truth, shouldn't she be furious? Why did she look like that?Curious, I walked over. "Karen, let me see."She acted as if she hadn't heard me.I called

When I didn't say anything, Karen set down her silverware and was quiet for a moment. "I was wrong to blame you for what happened before. I have something for you. Wait here."She got up and went upstairs to get it.I stared after her, puzzled, wondering why she was suddenly being so nice. Meanwhile, Cade pulled a small booklet out of his bag and waved it in front of my face. "Do you know what this is?"I ignored him.The next thing I heard was the sharp sound of paper ripping. He tore the booklet to shreds and grinned at me with a sinister smile. "These are the love letters Kayce wrote to Karen."I froze. Before I could react, Cade started shouting at the top of his lungs. "Todd, Karen treasures those more than her own life! Stop!"Karen rushed over at the commotion and saw her first love's handwriting torn to pieces and scattered all over the floor.Cade's eyes went red, and he slapped himself across the face. "Karen, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have taken them out in fron
