Chapter 1

Author: Sweetie Moore
I looked at my wife, Karen Quinn. The disgust on her face blurred together with the faces of everyone who had ever bullied me.

Yet back then, every time I was bullied, she was the one who threw herself in front of me without a second thought, protecting me and looking after me.

She had even broken the rules and taken punishments from her family time and time again, just to stand up for me.

Everyone envied us as childhood sweethearts who had grown up side by side. Both our families had arranged a marriage alliance between us.

But if I had known that marriage would turn us into enemies who couldn't stand the sight of each other, I would rather have stayed her friend for the rest of my life.

Right now, Karen and her male best friend were still laughing at me.

And I finally said the words I hadn't dared to say in five years of marriage. "Karen, let's get a divorce!"

The laughter stopped abruptly.

Shock flashed in Karen's eyes. She refused without even thinking about it. "No. I don't agree."

I looked up at her in surprise.

Did she still have even a sliver of feelings for me?

Before I could think any further, she raised an eyebrow in displeasure. "You know our company's stock will drop the moment I get divorced, so you're using that to threaten me, aren't you?

"Todd, don't forget that you owe me a life. You're going to spend the rest of your life paying it back. Don't even dream of getting out."

A stabbing pain shot through my heart, and my sickly face went a few shades paler.

Right. She hated me with everything she had. How could she possibly still have feelings for me?

I was only fooling myself.

Five years ago, because I married into her family, Karen was forced to break up with her first love, Kayce Foran.

At first, she knew there was no fighting a family marriage alliance, so she didn't push back. She even made me a solemn promise. "Todd, I'll forget Kayce and build a real life with you.

"It's just that I broke things off with him so suddenly. I'm afraid he'll do something stupid if he can't handle it. Can we keep our marriage from him for a while before we tell him?"

Being by her side was enough for me, so of course I did whatever she asked. I nodded and agreed to a private wedding that we would keep from the public for the time being.

But on the day of the wedding, news of our marriage alliance leaked online. Two powerful families joining forces made headlines, and soon the whole world knew.

On his way to the venue, her first love was in a car accident and died at the scene.

Devastated, Karen rushed to the morgue, where she found a bloodstained wedding invitation on his body.

Everyone around her accused me of leaking the news and sending him the invitation.

"Todd, I already promised to build a life with you. Why did you have to be so cruel? Why did you kill him?"

[Man, you had me look into Kayce's death. I found out everything, and I already sent the files to Karen.][Now pay me the rest of my fee. Don't play dead on me!]Karen froze.A seed of doubt took root in her mind."Why would Todd investigate Kayce's death? Could it be..."Cade's face went white. He never imagined he had overlooked this, though he had already paid off the detective. With me dead too, there was no one left who could prove anything, so he wasn't worried. He rushed to explain. "Todd must have hired someone to put on this act. I can't believe he's still trying to talk his way out of it, even after he's dead."Cade expected Karen to do what she always did and lash out at me the moment she heard that. But this time, she didn't answer him. Instead, she dialed the number.Cade's heart leapt into his throat.Luckily, he had acted fast and bought off the detective long ago.Karen called several times in a row, but no one picked up.I sighed.I thought Karen would lea

I would never be able to go to the press conference with her to set the record straight. When I still didn't respond, Karen kicked me even harder. My body rolled over. When she saw my face, she froze in place, then screamed and threw herself down beside me.She realized my body had already gone stiff and immediately called an ambulance to rush me to the hospital. She waited anxiously outside, only for the doctor to tell her I had been dead for days.Karen stood there in a daze. Counting back, she realized it had happened on the very day the maid came to warn her.She stumbled, and only Cade catching her arm in time kept her from falling. But her face was still ashen, her expression as lifeless as stagnant water. "So I was wrong about her. If I had listened to her that day and rushed to his room to get Todd to the hospital, would he still be all right?"Karen choked out her regret, and a single tear slid from the corner of her eye.The doctor sighed. "It was only a matter of ti

When the news broke, Karen's staff were all panicking, but she didn't seem to care. "What are you afraid of? Let them keep making noise."In a little while, I'll hold a press conference with Todd."We'll say we were just filming skits for fun, and the rumors will fall apart on their own."The louder they get now, the more free publicity they're giving us."She turned to Cade. "It's about time. We can let Todd out. Once he's had a while to recover, he can help us clean up this mess."Everyone froze, too afraid to say a word.Cade's eyes darted around. He didn't dare frame me again now. It would be far too obvious.Sooner or later, the news of my death would get out. When it did, it would be bad for him if Karen started losing faith in him.Even a single lie would plant a thorn in Karen's heart, and he'd never get back the trust she had in him now.He didn't dare take that step, so all he could do was sigh. "You've kept him locked up for so many days. I'm worried that if I go,

"What happened?"She was about to rush off to check on me when Cade caught her hand and sighed. "Karen, looks like you were too nice to him last time. Now he thinks that as long as he's sick, you'll give him extra attention."If you ask me, he's faking it to get you to notice him."Karen raised an eyebrow and slowly sat back down. "He never learns. He's trying to stir up trouble again!"The maid froze, then hurried to explain. "No, I really saw him lying on the floor. I couldn't wake him up no matter how many times I called him. Please, send someone to check on him."She begged through her tears.I sighed. I had once helped her when she was being picked on.I never expected that the girl who always seemed so distant would plead for me like this once something happened to me.Karen seemed a little moved and thought about going to take a look. But Cade turned his attention to the girl. "I remember you. Every time you got yelled at, Todd stood up for you."I've seen you go in an

It had the name "Todd Pittman" on it.She raised an eyebrow, signed for it, and tossed it aside. The courier quickly spoke up. "Ms. Quinn, the sender said this is very important. You need to open it right away, as soon as you receive it."Karen was annoyed, but with an outsider there, she held her tongue. She impatiently tore open the envelope to look inside.Seeing this, the courier let out a sigh of relief and pulled out a phone to report that the job was done. The moment Karen saw what was inside, she froze, a flicker of confusion deep in her eyes. "Why would he send me this?"When I saw Karen, I was a little confused too.Wasn't I locked in confinement? When had they let me out? Why couldn't I remember any of it?Before I could dwell on it, I heard Karen murmur to herself, and I was surprised. Now that she had seen the truth, shouldn't she be furious? Why did she look like that?Curious, I walked over. "Karen, let me see."She acted as if she hadn't heard me.I called

When I didn't say anything, Karen set down her silverware and was quiet for a moment. "I was wrong to blame you for what happened before. I have something for you. Wait here."She got up and went upstairs to get it.I stared after her, puzzled, wondering why she was suddenly being so nice. Meanwhile, Cade pulled a small booklet out of his bag and waved it in front of my face. "Do you know what this is?"I ignored him.The next thing I heard was the sharp sound of paper ripping. He tore the booklet to shreds and grinned at me with a sinister smile. "These are the love letters Kayce wrote to Karen."I froze. Before I could react, Cade started shouting at the top of his lungs. "Todd, Karen treasures those more than her own life! Stop!"Karen rushed over at the commotion and saw her first love's handwriting torn to pieces and scattered all over the floor.Cade's eyes went red, and he slapped himself across the face. "Karen, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have taken them out in fron
