Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
While I was still dazed, Karen walked in on her high heels, stepping into the room she hadn't once set foot in since we got married.

Cade lowered his head and apologized. "I'm sorry, Karen. I made sure everyone who was there kept quiet. I never thought Todd would leak it himself.

"Looks like tricking him with the fire this time made him really angry. He's willing to go down in flames as long as he takes you with him."

Only then did I understand. Someone had leaked what they'd done to me earlier that day, and they were blaming me for it.

Karen was about to lay into me when she suddenly noticed my swollen face. She froze, then turned on Cade. "You hit him?"

Why did she suddenly care?

The pain she had caused me was a hundred times worse than a few slaps.

Cade raised an eyebrow and shot back, "Are you feeling sorry for him, Karen?"

Karen looked at his face, which was so identical to her first love's, and gave a cold, haughty snort. "Don't hit him in the face next time. It looks bad."

My lowered eyes darkened.

So she was only worried about the company and her image.

If she didn't still care a little about what people would say, she wouldn't spare me a second glance even if I were beaten to death.

Karen looked down at me. "Todd, did you leak it?"

Of course I didn't.

But would she believe me if I said so?

Ever since Cade moved into the house, he had framed me over and over again.

No matter how I explained or tried to prove myself, even when I threw the evidence right in her face, she only ever believed Cade.

Just because he looked like her first love, she saw him through rose-colored glasses and was convinced everything was my fault.

Every time I explained myself, she hated me a little more.

I was tired of explaining by now. I just let out a quiet hum. "If you think it was me, then fine. It was me."

Hearing my answer, Karen seemed to finally have somewhere to let her emotions out. The corners of her eyes reddened, and she threw her purse at me. "What's this? You're not being stubborn this time? You're finally admitting you were wrong?

"Todd, if you had admitted your mistakes sooner, you wouldn't have had to suffer so much!"

She had a servant bring me ice for my face, though her tone stayed flat. "Once the swelling goes down, you're coming with me to a press conference. We'll show everyone how in love we are and put these rumors to rest."

Seeing that Karen wasn't going to punish me any further, and that her attitude had softened quite a bit, Cade tugged at her in confusion. "Karen, Todd caused our PR department a huge headache. You're just going to let him off that easily?"

In the past, Karen went along with almost everything he said. This time, though, she raised an eyebrow and brushed him off. "Didn't you already hit him? He's been punished. Just make sure it doesn't happen again."

For some reason, a spark of hope lit up inside me. I looked at her expectantly. "Karen, if I died, would you be sad?"

Karen frowned in irritation. "Todd, don't push your luck! If you died, I'd happily set off fireworks for a whole month to celebrate."

I gave a miserable smile.

I had let my imagination run away with me. She was still the same Karen who hated me to the bone.

The pain in my lungs spread through my entire body. I clenched my teeth to keep from groaning, yet deep down I felt a faint sense of relief.

That was fine. Her wish would come true soon enough.

Seeing the pain on my face, Karen shot me a sideways glance. "Wipe off that sallow makeup. I'm not falling for your sob story."

I froze.

She thought my sallow complexion was makeup. She had no idea I didn't have long to live.

[Man, you had me look into Kayce's death. I found out everything, and I already sent the files to Karen.][Now pay me the rest of my fee. Don't play dead on me!]Karen froze.A seed of doubt took root in her mind."Why would Todd investigate Kayce's death? Could it be..."Cade's face went white. He never imagined he had overlooked this, though he had already paid off the detective. With me dead too, there was no one left who could prove anything, so he wasn't worried. He rushed to explain. "Todd must have hired someone to put on this act. I can't believe he's still trying to talk his way out of it, even after he's dead."Cade expected Karen to do what she always did and lash out at me the moment she heard that. But this time, she didn't answer him. Instead, she dialed the number.Cade's heart leapt into his throat.Luckily, he had acted fast and bought off the detective long ago.Karen called several times in a row, but no one picked up.I sighed.I thought Karen would lea

I would never be able to go to the press conference with her to set the record straight. When I still didn't respond, Karen kicked me even harder. My body rolled over. When she saw my face, she froze in place, then screamed and threw herself down beside me.She realized my body had already gone stiff and immediately called an ambulance to rush me to the hospital. She waited anxiously outside, only for the doctor to tell her I had been dead for days.Karen stood there in a daze. Counting back, she realized it had happened on the very day the maid came to warn her.She stumbled, and only Cade catching her arm in time kept her from falling. But her face was still ashen, her expression as lifeless as stagnant water. "So I was wrong about her. If I had listened to her that day and rushed to his room to get Todd to the hospital, would he still be all right?"Karen choked out her regret, and a single tear slid from the corner of her eye.The doctor sighed. "It was only a matter of ti

When the news broke, Karen's staff were all panicking, but she didn't seem to care. "What are you afraid of? Let them keep making noise."In a little while, I'll hold a press conference with Todd."We'll say we were just filming skits for fun, and the rumors will fall apart on their own."The louder they get now, the more free publicity they're giving us."She turned to Cade. "It's about time. We can let Todd out. Once he's had a while to recover, he can help us clean up this mess."Everyone froze, too afraid to say a word.Cade's eyes darted around. He didn't dare frame me again now. It would be far too obvious.Sooner or later, the news of my death would get out. When it did, it would be bad for him if Karen started losing faith in him.Even a single lie would plant a thorn in Karen's heart, and he'd never get back the trust she had in him now.He didn't dare take that step, so all he could do was sigh. "You've kept him locked up for so many days. I'm worried that if I go,

"What happened?"She was about to rush off to check on me when Cade caught her hand and sighed. "Karen, looks like you were too nice to him last time. Now he thinks that as long as he's sick, you'll give him extra attention."If you ask me, he's faking it to get you to notice him."Karen raised an eyebrow and slowly sat back down. "He never learns. He's trying to stir up trouble again!"The maid froze, then hurried to explain. "No, I really saw him lying on the floor. I couldn't wake him up no matter how many times I called him. Please, send someone to check on him."She begged through her tears.I sighed. I had once helped her when she was being picked on.I never expected that the girl who always seemed so distant would plead for me like this once something happened to me.Karen seemed a little moved and thought about going to take a look. But Cade turned his attention to the girl. "I remember you. Every time you got yelled at, Todd stood up for you."I've seen you go in an

It had the name "Todd Pittman" on it.She raised an eyebrow, signed for it, and tossed it aside. The courier quickly spoke up. "Ms. Quinn, the sender said this is very important. You need to open it right away, as soon as you receive it."Karen was annoyed, but with an outsider there, she held her tongue. She impatiently tore open the envelope to look inside.Seeing this, the courier let out a sigh of relief and pulled out a phone to report that the job was done. The moment Karen saw what was inside, she froze, a flicker of confusion deep in her eyes. "Why would he send me this?"When I saw Karen, I was a little confused too.Wasn't I locked in confinement? When had they let me out? Why couldn't I remember any of it?Before I could dwell on it, I heard Karen murmur to herself, and I was surprised. Now that she had seen the truth, shouldn't she be furious? Why did she look like that?Curious, I walked over. "Karen, let me see."She acted as if she hadn't heard me.I called

When I didn't say anything, Karen set down her silverware and was quiet for a moment. "I was wrong to blame you for what happened before. I have something for you. Wait here."She got up and went upstairs to get it.I stared after her, puzzled, wondering why she was suddenly being so nice. Meanwhile, Cade pulled a small booklet out of his bag and waved it in front of my face. "Do you know what this is?"I ignored him.The next thing I heard was the sharp sound of paper ripping. He tore the booklet to shreds and grinned at me with a sinister smile. "These are the love letters Kayce wrote to Karen."I froze. Before I could react, Cade started shouting at the top of his lungs. "Todd, Karen treasures those more than her own life! Stop!"Karen rushed over at the commotion and saw her first love's handwriting torn to pieces and scattered all over the floor.Cade's eyes went red, and he slapped himself across the face. "Karen, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have taken them out in fron
