Chapter 4

Author: Sweetie Moore
Karen had just turned to leave when her secretary came over holding a phone. "Ms. Quinn, there's a call for you."

Karen put it on speaker. A soft laugh from her business rival came through on the other end. "Ms. Quinn, the rumors online are just a little warning. You'd better drop out of this bid. Otherwise, if I'm not careful, all the videos I have might just get released."

The call ended.

Karen opened the video and went pale.

So her rival was the one who had stirred up the online backlash. They had all wronged me.

Cade apologized, looking ashamed. "Karen, it's my fault for not looking into it properly. I almost ruined everything."

Karen couldn't bring herself to blame him and sighed. "At the end of the day, we got careless and gave someone something to use against us. We'll just be more careful next time."

Seeing Karen's deep frown, Cade gritted his teeth, helped me up, and stiffly apologized. "Todd, I misunderstood you this time. If you're still upset, go ahead and hit me back."

Before I could even move, Karen reached out protectively to stop me. "Don't be ridiculous! You were only trying to help me. He's the one who didn't open his mouth and explain himself. That's not on you."

Ha. It was my fault again.

But when had she ever believed a single one of my explanations?

I said nothing.

Right in front of me, her own husband, she slipped her arm through Cade's and comforted him as they walked away. She didn't spare a single glance for me, the one who had been wronged.

Everyone else in the room trickled out after them.

My body, which I had been forcing to hold up, finally gave out. A wave of dizziness swept over me, and I collapsed to the floor.

When I came to again, all I could smell was disinfectant.

I was about to open my eyes when I heard Cade whisper, his voice giddy, "Todd has stage four lung cancer. He doesn't have long to live. Killing Kayce back then and wrecking their relationship was worth it after all.

"Now I'm finally about to get everything I worked for!"

My whole body shook.

So all these years, I had been taking the blame for someone else!

For a moment, I desperately wanted to tell Karen the truth.

But a second later, I gave up on the idea in despair.

I had no proof. Nothing I said would make Karen believe me.

Once Cade's voice had faded away completely, I took out my phone, got in touch with a private detective, and had them look into it.

Whether Karen believed me or not, I was going to clear my name before I died.

I didn't know how much longer it was before Karen finally rushed in.

The moment she came through the door, I actually caught a trace of worry in her eyes.

But when I blinked again, there was nothing in her eyes but cold severity, as if what I'd seen had only been an illusion.

She asked the doctor, "Why did he suddenly pass out?"

The doctor hesitated.

Cade answered for him. "Oh, he just has low blood sugar. It's nothing serious."

Karen let out a breath of relief and believed it without even asking me.

She had me discharged and brought me home. She had the housekeeper cook a whole table of food, then pushed a bowl of beef stew in front of me and nagged at me to eat. "Todd, have I ever let you go without food or clothes? Who are you putting on this pitiful act for?

"Hurry up and eat more, so people don't go around saying the Quinn family starves its live-in son-in-law."

Karen cared about appearances more than anything.

So even when our relationship was at its worst, she never did what my family had done, cutting back on my food and clothes so everyone would know I was unwanted.

Instead, for the sake of so-called appearances, she defended me in public and put on a show of being a loving couple.

[Man, you had me look into Kayce's death. I found out everything, and I already sent the files to Karen.][Now pay me the rest of my fee. Don't play dead on me!]Karen froze.A seed of doubt took root in her mind."Why would Todd investigate Kayce's death? Could it be..."Cade's face went white. He never imagined he had overlooked this, though he had already paid off the detective. With me dead too, there was no one left who could prove anything, so he wasn't worried. He rushed to explain. "Todd must have hired someone to put on this act. I can't believe he's still trying to talk his way out of it, even after he's dead."Cade expected Karen to do what she always did and lash out at me the moment she heard that. But this time, she didn't answer him. Instead, she dialed the number.Cade's heart leapt into his throat.Luckily, he had acted fast and bought off the detective long ago.Karen called several times in a row, but no one picked up.I sighed.I thought Karen would lea

I would never be able to go to the press conference with her to set the record straight. When I still didn't respond, Karen kicked me even harder. My body rolled over. When she saw my face, she froze in place, then screamed and threw herself down beside me.She realized my body had already gone stiff and immediately called an ambulance to rush me to the hospital. She waited anxiously outside, only for the doctor to tell her I had been dead for days.Karen stood there in a daze. Counting back, she realized it had happened on the very day the maid came to warn her.She stumbled, and only Cade catching her arm in time kept her from falling. But her face was still ashen, her expression as lifeless as stagnant water. "So I was wrong about her. If I had listened to her that day and rushed to his room to get Todd to the hospital, would he still be all right?"Karen choked out her regret, and a single tear slid from the corner of her eye.The doctor sighed. "It was only a matter of ti

When the news broke, Karen's staff were all panicking, but she didn't seem to care. "What are you afraid of? Let them keep making noise."In a little while, I'll hold a press conference with Todd."We'll say we were just filming skits for fun, and the rumors will fall apart on their own."The louder they get now, the more free publicity they're giving us."She turned to Cade. "It's about time. We can let Todd out. Once he's had a while to recover, he can help us clean up this mess."Everyone froze, too afraid to say a word.Cade's eyes darted around. He didn't dare frame me again now. It would be far too obvious.Sooner or later, the news of my death would get out. When it did, it would be bad for him if Karen started losing faith in him.Even a single lie would plant a thorn in Karen's heart, and he'd never get back the trust she had in him now.He didn't dare take that step, so all he could do was sigh. "You've kept him locked up for so many days. I'm worried that if I go,

"What happened?"She was about to rush off to check on me when Cade caught her hand and sighed. "Karen, looks like you were too nice to him last time. Now he thinks that as long as he's sick, you'll give him extra attention."If you ask me, he's faking it to get you to notice him."Karen raised an eyebrow and slowly sat back down. "He never learns. He's trying to stir up trouble again!"The maid froze, then hurried to explain. "No, I really saw him lying on the floor. I couldn't wake him up no matter how many times I called him. Please, send someone to check on him."She begged through her tears.I sighed. I had once helped her when she was being picked on.I never expected that the girl who always seemed so distant would plead for me like this once something happened to me.Karen seemed a little moved and thought about going to take a look. But Cade turned his attention to the girl. "I remember you. Every time you got yelled at, Todd stood up for you."I've seen you go in an

It had the name "Todd Pittman" on it.She raised an eyebrow, signed for it, and tossed it aside. The courier quickly spoke up. "Ms. Quinn, the sender said this is very important. You need to open it right away, as soon as you receive it."Karen was annoyed, but with an outsider there, she held her tongue. She impatiently tore open the envelope to look inside.Seeing this, the courier let out a sigh of relief and pulled out a phone to report that the job was done. The moment Karen saw what was inside, she froze, a flicker of confusion deep in her eyes. "Why would he send me this?"When I saw Karen, I was a little confused too.Wasn't I locked in confinement? When had they let me out? Why couldn't I remember any of it?Before I could dwell on it, I heard Karen murmur to herself, and I was surprised. Now that she had seen the truth, shouldn't she be furious? Why did she look like that?Curious, I walked over. "Karen, let me see."She acted as if she hadn't heard me.I called

When I didn't say anything, Karen set down her silverware and was quiet for a moment. "I was wrong to blame you for what happened before. I have something for you. Wait here."She got up and went upstairs to get it.I stared after her, puzzled, wondering why she was suddenly being so nice. Meanwhile, Cade pulled a small booklet out of his bag and waved it in front of my face. "Do you know what this is?"I ignored him.The next thing I heard was the sharp sound of paper ripping. He tore the booklet to shreds and grinned at me with a sinister smile. "These are the love letters Kayce wrote to Karen."I froze. Before I could react, Cade started shouting at the top of his lungs. "Todd, Karen treasures those more than her own life! Stop!"Karen rushed over at the commotion and saw her first love's handwriting torn to pieces and scattered all over the floor.Cade's eyes went red, and he slapped himself across the face. "Karen, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have taken them out in fron
