Chapter 2

Author: Zac Neal
“I was just trying to be nice. I wanted to take Zoey along to see the world…”

The moment tears filled Natalie’s eyes, Sebastian’s eyes widened and his face twisted in fury.

“Zoey, drop the act, will you? You think you’re some saint? You’re only with me for the money anyway!”

The moment the words left his mouth, the whole class turned to stare at me. Their eyes were full of disbelief, disgust, and judgment.

“So she’s been dating Sebastian for his money? And here I thought she was all innocent!”

“It’s no wonder she’s always been jealous of Natalie. She’s just afraid someone might steal her sugar daddy!”

Listening to their whispers, Sebastian could not hide the satisfaction tugging at his lips.

“Well? Have you made up your mind? If you’re not coming, then give back every cent I’ve ever given you now!”

“You!”

My fingers trembled with anger, but under their scornful stares, all I could do was clench my teeth and nod.

“Fine! I’ll go!”

Sebastian was my sponsor, but our relationship was not what they thought.

In my previous life, I had only agreed to be his so-called girlfriend because I was desperate to pay my mother’s hospital bills.

However, the very next day after I said yes, he confessed to Natalie in front of the whole school, making it look like I was the pathetic third wheel clinging to him.

Later, I learned the truth. Sebastian had never liked me. He was only using me to incite Natalie’s jealousy.

I was nothing more than a pawn in their little love game.

Still, Natalie hated me for it.

She mocked me behind my back, snubbed me in public, and this Tanond trip was just another excuse to humiliate me again.

As I recalled it, I swallowed my rage and agreed to go, but this time, I did not call the police like I had in my previous life.

Instead, I quietly slipped away when it was almost time to board.

As long as I missed that flight, I could escape everything that would happen in Tanond.

I stared at the clock on my phone, counting down the minutes, praying that they would not notice I was gone.

However, just before the boarding gate closed, Natalie appeared out of nowhere and grabbed my arm.

“Found her!”

In an instant, the group swarmed around me, blocking every exit.

“Zoey, where do you think you’re going?” someone barked.

I kept my face calm.

“My passport’s missing. I can’t go. You guys go ahead without me.”

Before I could take a step, Sebastian reached into my pocket and pulled out my passport, waving them in front of my face.

“Missing, huh? Then what’s this?”

Realizing my lie had been exposed, I did not bother to fake it anymore.

“I don’t want to go to Tanond. You all can go watch your stupid strip shows without me.”

“Not going?”

Natalie shrieked. Her voice was sharp enough to make everyone flinch.

“We already bought the tickets! You think you can just back out?”

I frowned as I snatched my documents back from Sebastian.

“I’ll pay you back, but I’m not going to Tanond.”

“Pay me back?”

Sebastian let out a cold laugh. His tone dripped with sarcasm.

“Do you have money? Don’t forget that it was my money that paid your mother’s hospital bills!”

That single sentence made the crowd turn on me instantly.

“Zoey, how can you be so shameless? He helped you and now you’re backing out? You’ve got no shame at all!”

“Yeah! You could’ve said so sooner! Changing your mind at the last minute. What? Was this all some kind of joke to you?”

“A joke?”

Extra Chapter — SebastianThe rain here always carried the scent of rust.I curled up in the dog cage, blankly gazing at the mold creeping along the wall. I could not stop myself from thinking back to the summer of senior year.Natalie wore a pink sundress. She swung my arm, telling me that she wanted to go to Tanond to see a strip show. Rays of sun slipped through the camphor trees, illuminating her hair and turning them into strands of shimmering gold.Zoey stood at the end of the corridor in her white shirt, a corner lifted by the wind. She was warning us not to go, saying that it was not safe.I frowned and wondered why this girl always felt like an old rag — so stubborn and a buzzkill.“Sebastian, she’s simply jealous because someone actually cares about Nat.” One of my lackeys nudged my arm.“Just look at her, all shabby and nervous. She’s clearly worried that we’ll leave her behind.”I snorted.Zoey did need money. Her mother’s hospital bills were piled up like a

The tip of my pen scratched across the draft paper, making soft sounds, like a quiet sigh for all those who had died in vain.Sebastian would probably never understand. He had protected Natalie all his life, but by the time she was rescued and brought back home, she was already telling people that Sebastian had willingly stayed there to make a fortune. All the things he had done to me to please her had become thorns in his heart. That night, I watched the storm lash against the window and suddenly remembered the days before summer vacation, when they crowded around Natalie, laughing excitedly about going to see the strip show. The sun was fierce and their smiles were foolish. No one could have imagined how that ridiculous trip would drag everyone straight into hell.My phone buzzed. It was a message from the police with the case closure notice. It stated that those involved in the Tanond trip had been dealt with according to the law and that the missing individuals had been off

“How are you going to make up for my daughter’s life?!”The police tried to push the crowd back, but the angry wave knocked them aside.“Don’t hold back! These bitches deserve it!”A man in a suit kicked Natalie square in the chest.“Do you dare look at the photos of my son’s severed fingers?!”Natalie was coughing out blood when she suddenly screamed, “They went willingly! Back in Tanond, they agreed to let me leave first!”“Nonsense!”The tiniest survivor lunged forward and bit off a piece of her ear.“You said that if we killed Zoey, your dad would get us all out!”The chaos did not stop until the wailing sirens of ambulances pierced the air. By the time stretchers arrived, the survivors were barely recognizable.Natalie was carried off with one leg twisted at a grotesque angle. Her eyes still fixed in my direction.Later, I heard that these survivors suffered more than anyone else.Even though Natalie’s father used connections to bail her out, she was left permanently d

A few of the students behind Natalie instinctively took a step back, avoiding my gaze. The uproar from the parents suddenly ceased. All eyes locked onto the phone in my hand. The only sound in the room was the sharp clicking of camera shutters. The police officer quickly stepped forward, taking the phone and connecting it to a laptop. When the malicious chat logs were projected onto the temporary white screen, everyone drew in sharp, shocked breaths.“She actually said that?”“She even said she wanted to teach Zoey a lesson… That’s sick!”Natalie’s mother suddenly screamed, “Lies! This is fabricated! My daughter would never say such things!”She lunged to grab the laptop but was blocked by the police.I watched Natalie trembling like a fallen leaf in the autumn wind, and I could not stop myself from laughing.“Fabricated? Want to hear what she actually said at the airport when she tied me up?”I pulled the recorder hidden in my collar and pressed play. Instantly, Natalie’s s

A woman dressed in black lunged at me. Her fingernails nearly jabbed into my face.“My daughter’s only seventeen! How dare you trick her into going to a place like that!”The parents around me erupted like a pack of lit firecrackers, closing in on me from all sides.Spit flew into my face as a torrent of curses rained down on me.“Murderer!”“Heartless monster!”“You deserve to die!”I struggled to get up, but someone kicked me hard in the back, slamming me down again. My eyes were filled with blood and dirt, and my vision went completely fuzzy.“I didn’t!”I wiped my face. My voice was hoarse and raw.“I never told them to go to Tanond!”“Liar!”The crowd suddenly parted. Natalie walked out, flanked by several other survivors. Her eyes were red and she looked pitifully fragile.“Zoey! You were the one who begged everyone to go to Tanond to see a strip show! Then you disappeared at the airport. You must’ve taken money from those people and tricked us into going!”Another

“Mom, I’m safe now. Don’t worry.”A familiar voice came through the line. The tone was deliberately light, but I could hear the faint tremor underneath. If everyone had said the same thing, it would have only sounded more like a carefully coordinated lie.The police officer in the hospital room clearly noticed it too and was about to step forward to ask questions when the calls abruptly ended. It was as though the signal had been cut.The parents exchanged nervous glances. The fear they had been holding back erupted. Some of them could not help but cry out.It was not long before the police brought news. The moment they landed in Tanond, the so-called local guides tricked them into a telecom fraud operation. The boys could barely keep in touch, but most of the girls suffered inhuman abuse. Those who resisted fiercely did not even manage to send a single message of reassurance to their families. This rare case of high school students encountering danger abroad quickly caused a
