Chapter 3

Author: Zac Neal
I rolled my eyes and let out a cold laugh.

“Weren’t you the ones whispering behind my back saying you’d teach me a lesson once we got to Tanond? Should I pull up your group chat and remind you of what you said?”

The moment the words left my mouth, every face around me changed.

They exchanged nervous glances as suspicion flickered in their eyes.

No one knew how I found out, only that someone, somehow, had leaked their secret.

They would never know that in my past life, after I stopped them at the airport customs, I found their secret group chat — the one they made just to leave me out.

It was all because I had tried to stop them. They created a group chat and came up with a plan to steal my phone and passport in Tanond, leaving me stranded and helpless in a foreign country.

Back then, I kept wondering if I had gone too far and blamed myself for interfering too much. Perhaps Tanond was not as dangerous as I thought.

Then came the headlines — tourists vanishing one after another across Tanond, and I realized just how close I had come to dying.

Now, remembering all that, the only thing left in me was a bone-deep chill.

These classmates of mine were nothing more than a pack of wolves that could never be tamed.

I turned to leave.

Natalie suddenly yanked me back by the arm. She spun around and shouted to the others.

“She can’t go! If she leaves, she’ll definitely call the cops and tell our parents! Then none of us will be able to go!”

The moment she said that, the whole class turned pale.

In an instant, everyone closed in. Their eyes were sharp with suspicion and wariness, fixed on me.

“Zoey, you’re just waiting for us to board so you can report us, aren’t you? You just don’t want us to see the show, right?”

I took a half step back, doing everything I could to stall them.

Then, I took another half step back, forcing down the panic rising in my chest as I managed a shaky smile, pretending to play along.

“Of course not. I just heard that Tanond's too hot. I don’t want to get sunburned, that’s all.”

Natalie’s eyes darkened. She ignored my words entirely. With a single sweeping gesture, she pronounced me guilty.

“Don’t listen to her! She’s just jealous and trying to ruin it for us! If she won’t come willingly, we’ll drag her on that plane ourselves!”

Before I could react, several classmates grabbed me, one on each side, forcing my arms up as they started hauling me toward the gate.

I struggled, kicked, and twisted, but I was no match for all of them. Panic surged in my chest as the boarding gate loomed closer.

“Help! Somebody help me!”

From a distance, an airport staff member turned around and began walking toward us.

In a sudden panic, Natalie covered my mouth, her eyes filled with sheer panic.

“Zoey, what the hell are you trying to do?!”

Sebastian grounded his teeth as he spoke. His eyes were practically overflowing with irritation.

I wrenched Natalie’s hand away and turned to him, my words spilling out in haste.

“Sebastian, please, you have to believe me. I’m not calling the police. My mom’s still in the hospital. I just can’t leave the country right now.”

Perhaps mentioning my mother’s hospitalization was convincing enough. Sebastian froze for a moment, then glanced hesitantly at Natalie.

“Nat, maybe… we should just leave her.”

For a split second, a hint of hatred flashed across Natalie’s eyes when she saw how easily Sebastian faltered, but she quickly masked it with a smile.

She glanced around, quickly nodded, but her words dripped with cunning.

“We can leave her behind, but what if she’s just making an excuse to get out of it? Sebastian, you know my family’s sending me abroad soon. If we miss this summer, who knows when we’ll get another chance to go on a trip together?”

Extra Chapter — SebastianThe rain here always carried the scent of rust.I curled up in the dog cage, blankly gazing at the mold creeping along the wall. I could not stop myself from thinking back to the summer of senior year.Natalie wore a pink sundress. She swung my arm, telling me that she wanted to go to Tanond to see a strip show. Rays of sun slipped through the camphor trees, illuminating her hair and turning them into strands of shimmering gold.Zoey stood at the end of the corridor in her white shirt, a corner lifted by the wind. She was warning us not to go, saying that it was not safe.I frowned and wondered why this girl always felt like an old rag — so stubborn and a buzzkill.“Sebastian, she’s simply jealous because someone actually cares about Nat.” One of my lackeys nudged my arm.“Just look at her, all shabby and nervous. She’s clearly worried that we’ll leave her behind.”I snorted.Zoey did need money. Her mother’s hospital bills were piled up like a

The tip of my pen scratched across the draft paper, making soft sounds, like a quiet sigh for all those who had died in vain.Sebastian would probably never understand. He had protected Natalie all his life, but by the time she was rescued and brought back home, she was already telling people that Sebastian had willingly stayed there to make a fortune. All the things he had done to me to please her had become thorns in his heart. That night, I watched the storm lash against the window and suddenly remembered the days before summer vacation, when they crowded around Natalie, laughing excitedly about going to see the strip show. The sun was fierce and their smiles were foolish. No one could have imagined how that ridiculous trip would drag everyone straight into hell.My phone buzzed. It was a message from the police with the case closure notice. It stated that those involved in the Tanond trip had been dealt with according to the law and that the missing individuals had been off

“How are you going to make up for my daughter’s life?!”The police tried to push the crowd back, but the angry wave knocked them aside.“Don’t hold back! These bitches deserve it!”A man in a suit kicked Natalie square in the chest.“Do you dare look at the photos of my son’s severed fingers?!”Natalie was coughing out blood when she suddenly screamed, “They went willingly! Back in Tanond, they agreed to let me leave first!”“Nonsense!”The tiniest survivor lunged forward and bit off a piece of her ear.“You said that if we killed Zoey, your dad would get us all out!”The chaos did not stop until the wailing sirens of ambulances pierced the air. By the time stretchers arrived, the survivors were barely recognizable.Natalie was carried off with one leg twisted at a grotesque angle. Her eyes still fixed in my direction.Later, I heard that these survivors suffered more than anyone else.Even though Natalie’s father used connections to bail her out, she was left permanently d

A few of the students behind Natalie instinctively took a step back, avoiding my gaze. The uproar from the parents suddenly ceased. All eyes locked onto the phone in my hand. The only sound in the room was the sharp clicking of camera shutters. The police officer quickly stepped forward, taking the phone and connecting it to a laptop. When the malicious chat logs were projected onto the temporary white screen, everyone drew in sharp, shocked breaths.“She actually said that?”“She even said she wanted to teach Zoey a lesson… That’s sick!”Natalie’s mother suddenly screamed, “Lies! This is fabricated! My daughter would never say such things!”She lunged to grab the laptop but was blocked by the police.I watched Natalie trembling like a fallen leaf in the autumn wind, and I could not stop myself from laughing.“Fabricated? Want to hear what she actually said at the airport when she tied me up?”I pulled the recorder hidden in my collar and pressed play. Instantly, Natalie’s s

A woman dressed in black lunged at me. Her fingernails nearly jabbed into my face.“My daughter’s only seventeen! How dare you trick her into going to a place like that!”The parents around me erupted like a pack of lit firecrackers, closing in on me from all sides.Spit flew into my face as a torrent of curses rained down on me.“Murderer!”“Heartless monster!”“You deserve to die!”I struggled to get up, but someone kicked me hard in the back, slamming me down again. My eyes were filled with blood and dirt, and my vision went completely fuzzy.“I didn’t!”I wiped my face. My voice was hoarse and raw.“I never told them to go to Tanond!”“Liar!”The crowd suddenly parted. Natalie walked out, flanked by several other survivors. Her eyes were red and she looked pitifully fragile.“Zoey! You were the one who begged everyone to go to Tanond to see a strip show! Then you disappeared at the airport. You must’ve taken money from those people and tricked us into going!”Another
