Chapter 2

Liora Z
Corbin looked at me with disdain, his voice dripping with loathing.

"You should be glad you're free, Ayla. What can the Laurel Pack even offer a powerful Alpha besides ancient marriage pacts? You're just a weak parasite, living on the faded glory of your ancestors."

Murmurs spread through the guests.

It was true. The Laurel Pack’s power had been declining for a decade, while the Black Moon Pack was more prosperous than ever.

"Corbin’s right!" Faye beside him let out a laugh.

She put on an innocent act, leaned close to me, and sniffed lightly.

"But I'm curious. The legends say Laurel women have a powerful Luna aura, so why don't I feel any pressure from Ayla at all?"

"Ayla, I know you’re desperate to cling to the future Alpha, but you really ought to know your place, don’t you think?"

Looking at the two of them standing there arrogantly, I curled my lips slightly.

In my past life, I was too meek, always trying to please everyone.

"Maybe the legends are exaggerated," someone snickered from the crowd.

"Besides me, what truly powerful Alpha would want her?" Corbin continued his verbal assault. "She's twenty-three and still hasn't found a proper mate. That says it all."

Faye cooed, clinging to his arm. "A bond like ours, born from true love, is what's most precious. We don't need any bloodlines or pacts, just pure love."

I watched their performance, feeling nothing but cold disgust.

"You're right," my voice was surprisingly calm. "I agree completely. Let's end this betrothal."

Corbin was clearly taken aback.

He expected me to cry, to beg, to fight for him.

That's what I did in my last life.

He couldn't help but speak up: "You actually agreed?"

I nodded. "You’ve already called my family liars. I would never cling to a Alpha like you."

Corbin let out a cold huff and said condescendingly: "At least you have some shame."

The High Elder raised his staff. The crystal on the Moon Goddess statue dimmed. "The Moon Goddess has witnessed your decision. The marriage pact between the Black Moon and Laurel packs is hereby void."

There was no flash of silver, no magical feeling of a bond shattering. All I felt was the weight lifting off my shoulders. Free.

"Congratulations," I said, looking at Corbin and Faye with a cold smile. "I wish you both happiness."

With that, I turned and walked out of the sanctuary.

My parents followed, worried, but I signaled for them to give me some space.

Outside the sanctuary, I pulled out my phone and texted a number I had saved for a long time:

"I’ve called off my engagement with Corbin. You once made me a promise. You said the Luna title of your pack was mine for the taking. Does that offer still stand?"

The reply came almost instantly:

"My promise is eternal."

It was followed by a picture—a black private jet landing on the tarmac at Silver City International Airport.

"Ayla, wait for me."

It wasn't just Corbin who had someone he'd left behind.

Finn and I had known each other since we were kids. As the Alpha of the Stone Pack, he was my first crush, and I was his.

If it weren't for the ancient pact binding our two packs, I would have been his Luna long ago. Corbin would have never even been in the picture.

Three days later, I was invited to a charity gala.

As soon as I walked in, I saw Corbin at the center of a crowd of elites.

He held a glass of whiskey, looking proud and full of himself. "An Alpha controls his own destiny. So what if my parents don't like Faye? I've already marked her in an unofficial ceremony. She's my one and only woman now."

Faye leaned gently on his shoulder. "Corbin defied the elders for my sake. I'll treasure him forever."

The sycophants in the crowd immediately started fawning over them. "Alpha Corbin has real guts! I say that whole 'curse' thing sounds fake. Only a fool would believe that crap."

"And the Laurel Pack is even worse, bragging about some special bloodline. I bet that Ayla girl just made it all up to trap Alpha Corbin."

Corbin scoffed.

"The legend of our family curse says our Alphas don't live past thirty. Look at my grandfather. He's ninety. My father is almost sixty. The curse didn't take them, did it? They always say the Laurel ritual saved them, but I think it was just a coincidence. My thirtieth birthday is next week. We'll see if I actually die without that ridiculous song."

Faye clutched his arm and said softly, "Corbin, you'll live a long and happy life."

I had no interest in their drama and found a quiet corner to sit.

But it wasn't long before someone noticed me.

"Hey, isn't that Ayla from the Laurel Pack?"

"What's she doing here?"

"She can't still be hung up on Corbin, can she? Trying to win him back?"

The whispers reached Corbin's group.

Corbin frowned, his tone displeased.

"I knew she wouldn’t be able to let go. How disgusting."

Faye nervously grabbed his arm, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Dear, the elders have always favored Ayla… What if she insists on getting back together with you? What should I do?"

Seeing his beloved in tears, Corbin’s expression instantly turned cold.

He comforted her, "Faye, don’t worry, I won't give her the chance."

With that, he and his entourage started walking toward me.

Three days later, at dusk.I was in the garden trimming roses when a servant ran up to me."Luna, there's someone at the gate." His face was pale. "It's Corbin, but…""But what?""He looks… terrible."I put down my shears and walked to the gate.I could hear his wails from a distance.Through the iron bars, I saw a figure covered in bandages, kneeling on the ground. Was that really Corbin? His left arm was in a cast, his face was wrapped in gauze, and he looked like a demon that had crawled out of hell.Worse was his eyes—all reason was gone, replaced by pure terror and despair."Ayla!" He saw me and immediately started crawling forward. "Save me! Please, save me!"I stood inside the gate, looking down at him."Did the alternative treatment fail?""Completely!" He was sobbing like a child. "The girl died, and my rage is worse than ever!""And?""I've severed my bond with Faye!" he pleaded. "I've renounced my Alpha title! My fortune, the pack, it's all yours! Anything!"I scoffed. "And

We knew nothing of Corbin’s drama, nor did we care.At that moment, I was with Finn in the warm ocean breeze, choosing the next stop for our honeymoon. He was flipping through a leather-bound manual with ancient nautical charts, but his eyes kept wandering over to me.I couldn't help but laugh. "You're not even looking at these, are you?"Finn glanced at the sky. The moon was high. He smirked. "The night is young."I knew exactly what he meant. "Then… I'll go take a bath."He nodded, a flash of light in his eyes, like a wolf king waiting for the hunt. After we had both bathed, he dried my long hair for me, his movements gentle and meticulous, as if handling a priceless treasure.Soon, he swept me into his arms and gently laid me on the soft, massive bed.Finn stroked the mark on my neck. "Our bond… it feels even stronger."I closed my eyes, feeling the energy surging through my veins. The power of the Moon Goddess's blood was fully awakening.I could feel every one of Finn's emotions,

The day of the ceremony. At ten in the morning, I stood on a pier on the Azure Coast. The Endless Sea stretched out before me, the sea breeze gently caressing my white dress. This private island, named "The Goddess's Tear," was normally closed to the public. Finn had booked it for three whole days."Ready?" Finn walked up behind me, his hands resting on my shoulders.I nodded. In the distance, the roar of helicopters grew louder. One after another, they descended from the sky, carrying rare and exotic flowers from all over the world. Every single bloom was worth a fortune."By the Goddess!" a newly arrived noblewoman gasped. "What fortune must this have cost?""It's not about the cost," her partner said, shaking his head. "Some of these flowers can't even be bought. You need special channels."The guests began to arrive.Alphas from every major pack in the Northern Territories, representatives from the Western Royal families, financial titans from the Golden Avenue—every guest was a ti

"I found it! I found it!" Faye held up her phone, her voice shaking with excitement. "An alternative! We don't need Ayla's song!"Logan and Elena immediately crowded around her."What is it?" Logan demanded.Faye scrolled frantically, a crazed light in her eyes. "I found a blood shaman on the shadow net. He says he can use an ancient ritual to find a distant relative with a trace of the goddess's bloodline—""And then?" Elena pressed."And use their life force to forge a temporary echo of the power!" Faye's cheeks were flushed. "As long as we find a she-wolf willing to sacrifice herself, we can stabilize Corbin!"Corbin stopped growling. A flicker of reason seemed to return."Really?" He stared intently at Faye's phone."It's true! The shaman said he's done it successfully many times!"Logan and Elena looked at each other, a spark of hope igniting in their eyes.I laughed to myself.I’d heard of this barbaric method in my past life.It worked, for a time. But the cost was an innocent s

I hung up."Who was that?" Finn asked softly."No one important." I shut my phone off and leaned into his arms.Moonlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling window. Finn’s hand gently traced the mark on my neck."How does it feel?" His voice was a low, magnetic rumble."Complete." I closed my eyes, sinking into a sense of peace I'd never known. "More complete than I've ever felt."This mate bond was ten times stronger than the one I’d shared with Corbin in my past life.Back then, I thought that was love. Now I knew what a true connection felt like."Me too." Finn kissed my forehead. "After all these years, I finally have you."My phone started vibrating again. The toxin gradually took effect, and my body began to twitch involuntarily.Corbin pressed his lips together and said coldly, “Enough. Stop pouring it.”Liam let me go. I collapsed onto the sofa, coughing uncontrollably. The burn of the silver vodka seared a path from my throat to my stomach. Every breath was like swallowing fire."This is just a small lesson," Corbin said, looming over me, his voice freezing cold. "If you ever dare to hurt Faye again, it won't be this easy."People were pointing and whispering. Some looked pleased, others offered fake sympathy."Serves her right. She's a vicious one.""Alpha Corbin handled that perfectly.
