Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
This time, I didn't rush out from behind the desk to help Crystal.

Everything was already in place.

Before she arrived, I brought a folding ladder out of the utility room and carried it to the lobby entrance.

I looked up at the security camera, where the trouble started. The camera pointed out toward the street to catch anyone trying to slip in, leaving the entire stretch from the glass doors to the elevator in a blind spot.

Once someone came inside, it caught little more than a blurry glimpse of their back.

In my previous life, that blurry glimpse was what ruined me.

I tilted the camera inward and adjusted it until I could see everything from the glass doors to the elevator lobby and card reader. Every floor tile was in view.

Then I moved the ladder beneath the camera in the elevator lobby.

That camera was aimed at the card reader, making it hard to see where people stood, whether they leaned against the wall, or if anyone touched them.

I adjusted it as well, until the entire elevator lobby was in the frame.

The camera inside the elevator didn't need any work. It faced the doors and clearly captured everyone who stepped inside.

I climbed down and headed back toward the entrance, checking the feeds on the monitor several times.

All three cameras now gave me continuous coverage from the entrance to the elevator, with no blind spots.

As a security guard, I was responsible for those cameras. Adjusting them to capture what actually happened was part of my job, and I wanted footage no one could pick apart.

By now, Crystal was slumped over the desk, reeking of alcohol. She squinted at me and smiled.

"Hey… Could you give me a hand?"

Her words came out sweet and slurred. She sagged against the desk, as though she might slide to the floor at any moment.

In my previous life, I would've reached for her by now.

This time, I kept my hands beneath the desk and closed my fingers around a folding stainless steel cane.

Management kept it in the bottom compartment for elderly residents who had trouble walking. I unfolded it and held it out to her, keeping a full three feet between us.

"Here. Lean on this and take it slow."

She went still for a second, apparently surprised that I offered her a cane instead of an arm. But she could barely stand, and she instinctively reached for it.

As soon as she took hold of the cane, I let go and stepped back behind the desk.

She leaned on it as she made her way to the elevator lobby, then swiped her card and stepped into the elevator on her own.

I watched the timestamp in the bottom-right corner of the monitor. From the moment she came through the entrance until the elevator doors closed, exactly 39 seconds passed.

Throughout those 39 seconds, I stayed at least 3 feet away from her. My fingers never even brushed her clothes.

Only when the elevator doors closed did I let out a breath.

Still, I knew this wasn't over.

In my previous life, she made up the entire story about the emergency stairwell. Even though I never laid a finger on her this time, she could still make up whatever story she wanted.

The truth never mattered to her. She wanted views, and an honest, unsuspecting security guard like me was an easy way to get them.

I went back into the guard booth, took my phone from the drawer, and exported all three recordings from that night in full. I didn't cut a second or alter a single frame.

This time, I wouldn't beg anyone to speak up for me. I would make sure my side of the story came from people they would believe.

I didn't agree because I wanted to be famous. I did it because I remembered who I was in my previous life.I was a man desperately posting the same security footage on platform after platform, typing the same explanations over and over. In the end, people dismissed it all with "Management edited it," and their refusal to believe me broke me and cost me my life.No one told me that my word alone wouldn't clear my name, or that I needed to put the evidence in the hands of credible people with no ties to me.No one told me to call the police and a reporter as soon as the accusations started. Instead, I sat there with shaking hands, clipping a video no one would believe. If someone had, maybe I wouldn't have died on that road. Maybe Dad wouldn't have collapsed beside that cold stove.I couldn't save the man I was in my previous life. But someone watching might be in the same position, falsely accused, with nowhere to turn and no way to make themselves heard. Maybe I could help them.

Viewers recording the livestream already had every second saved, from the police statement to the screenshot of the agency's group chat. That night, the brands behind her new ad deals announced one after another that they were cutting ties with her.Her carefully crafted image fell apart. She was supposed to be a young woman living alone in the big city, struggling to find her way but refusing to give up.People dug through her old videos and discovered an entire team behind her supposedly independent life. They managed every detail, right down to the angle of her face when she cried. Then someone uncovered messages from her private account. She called the fans who cared about her and spent money on virtual gifts "suckers" and "walking ATMs."More came out by the hour, until she deleted all her videos and shut down every account. But the internet remembered. "Crystal remembered it wrong" became one of the biggest memes online.Meanwhile, things were so quiet on my end that it

[You remembered it wrong? You put his face out there and let people dox him for three hours, and that's your excuse?][I was just trashing that Paul guy. Now I want to slap myself.][So you "remembered it wrong." Who's gonna answer for his parents getting harassed and his reputation getting destroyed?]I sat in the guard booth, watching the comments race across the screen, and let out a long breath. In my previous life, I posted that footage on every platform I could, carefully explaining what happened and all but begging someone to believe me. No one listened. This time, I didn't say another word. I simply put the footage into the right hands. The truth alone wasn't enough to convince people. They needed to see it in writing, backed by an official statement.Within an hour of the police statement, public opinion turned completely. The same people demanding that I be shot flooded Crystal's livestream, insisting she explain herself. She frantically tried to end the stream, but h

By 3 p.m., Crystal's viewer count had settled at 310,400.Comments scrolled faster than I could read them. [Make him pay], [Shoot him], and [Scumbag security guard] filled the screen.Apparently satisfied that she whipped everyone into enough of a frenzy, Crystal began urging her fans to "fight for justice."She wiped away her tears, speaking slowly, her voice full of hurt and determination. "I've made up my mind. I'm going to the police. I can't let someone like him keep working here and putting other women at risk."The comments erupted in support.[Yes! Report him!][Good for you, girl!][Need a lawyer? We'll raise the money!]Just then, her livestream briefly froze. Her connection wasn't the problem. Countless people were refreshing the same post at once. The local police department had released a statement on its official account. The headline read, [Statement Regarding Online Allegations of Harassment by a Security Guard.]The statement was brief and to the point.

At 11:40 a.m., my phone buzzed. A friend sent me a link followed by three huge question marks. My heart lurched as I tapped it. There was the same livestream, the same red-rimmed eyes.Crystal sat at a vanity draped in sheer white fabric. Soft lighting behind her made her look pale and vulnerable."About last night… I've spent all morning wondering if I should say anything."She sniffled, with just enough of a tremor in her voice."There's this security guard at my complex… I was drunk, and I could barely walk. He helped me… but then he started leading me toward the emergency stairwell…"Comments flooded in.[What the hell? Another security guard?][Do these people seriously think they can do whatever they want to the residents?][Don't be scared, girl. Tell us who he is!]I stared at the screen, my fingers cold. Strangely, though, I felt steady. In my previous life, watching this felt like the end of the world. I panicked, scrambled to explain, clipped the security footag

  • This Time, I Never Touched Her   Chapter 3

I barely slept that night.Around dawn, I put my head down on the little desk in the guard booth and dozed off. In my dreams, I was back on that road, with the dump truck barreling toward me. I jolted awake, my back slick with cold sweat.I pulled out my phone. It was 6 a.m., and daylight was creeping in.After my shift, I rode my old bike back to my rented room, working through my plan along the way.In my previous life, Crystal caught me completely off guard. By the time I understood what was happening, the rumors were everywhere, and I couldn't get the evidence to anyone who could help. This time, I needed to act before she did. Denying accusations she hadn't made yet wouldn't help, but I could get the evidence into the right hands before she started lying.I organized the three videos on my phone, labeling each file with her arrival time, the camera location, and the recording's length. Then I called the local police station and explained exactly what happened the night
