Chapter 2

Autor: No Mood Nano
Whenever she was feeling upset back then, she would order me around like this, and I would obey without question.

This time, she assumed I would do the same. She did not even bother to look back at me.

As I watched the two of them leave together, a sharp ache pierced my chest.

Yvette was the woman I had loved for my entire life.

In my previous life, I had even cut ties with my only family, Diana, just so I could marry her. After we married, she became the only person I had left.

On my birthday, she told me she had to entertain a client. Then she had a delivery driver bring me a cake that cost a little over a hundred dollars.

That same night, I saw her trending on social media. The Sanders family’s only daughter had spent a million dollars setting off fireworks for the man she loved.

I once drank myself into a stomach hemorrhage just to help her close a deal.

While I was in the hospital, she never came to see me. Later, I learned that Edmund had caught a cold, and she had stayed by his side for an entire week, barely sleeping.

Eventually, years of pushing myself too hard caused my heart to fail. On the day I underwent a heart transplant, they needed a family member’s signature.

She replied, “Don’t you have hands? Are you really going to die just because I refuse to sign?”

After the surgery, I saw her social media post.

[Sandboarding with the person I love. Even wiping out is fun.]

The photo showed her hand intertwined with another man’s. I recognized the ring on Edmund’s finger instantly.

It was the only thing my parents had left me.

The emotional shock sent my body into a downward spiral. I developed a severe infection, and despite the doctors’ best efforts, I died.

Just remembering it brought the agony of my final moments crashing back — the unbearable pain of the infection tearing through my body.

I clutched my chest, struggling to catch my breath.

Diana was worried something was wrong and hurriedly took me home. She even warned me not to destroy my health by pushing myself too hard with my studies.

The concern in her eyes nearly broke me.

In my previous life, when Diana refused to approve of my marriage to Yvette, I had publicly severed ties with her.

She was so hurt that she hardened her heart and stopped looking after me. Despite this, in the end, she was still the one who came to collect my body.

The sight of my corpse had turned her hair white overnight. She was only eight years older than me.

This time, I quickly wrapped my arms around her. “Don’t worry. I’ve already got most of my studying under control. I’ll be fine for next month’s exam.”

“Next month?” Diana looked confused. “Isn’t the entrance exam in December?”

I pulled up my registration confirmation on my phone. “I want to go to Wesvard University.”

Just like in my previous life, Diana supported me no matter what I chose. That very night, she sent someone to Cadican to buy a house and have it furnished exactly to my taste.

The next morning, I received an unexpected text from Edmund. He had probably found my number on Yvette’s phone.

[She spent the entire night by my hospital bed. She didn’t dare leave me for even a moment.]

In the photo, Yvette was asleep beside him, her eyes closed and her hand tightly clasping his.

I screenshotted the message and deleted it. A moment later, another text came through.

[She says she doesn’t feel comfortable leaving me alone, so she wants me to stay at her place. What do you think?]

A sharp pain stabbed through my chest. I tightened my grip on my phone.

Yvette had once told me that home was her most private sanctuary. She hated having anyone else live with her.

That was why we always stayed at hotels when we were dating.

Even after we got married in my previous life, she still refused to live with me. Instead, she bought me a house next door.

Aside from the marriage certificate, we were practically nothing more than neighbors.

However, Edmund could walk straight into the one place she had always kept private. Somehow, that made me feel even more like a fool.

I finally understood that giving more love never meant that one would have the upper hand.

I was about to delete Edmund’s messages when Yvette suddenly called. “I was cleaning the house and found some of your things. Come get them.”

I let out a bitter laugh. What was she worried about? Was she afraid Edmund would misunderstand what we were to each other?

“Throw them away.”

My voice was strangely calm. “They’re just trash. There’s no reason to keep them.”

I had no objections to Diana’s arrangements.Just before we finished talking, she suddenly said, “Oh, by the way. That girl from tonight didn’t get a chance to talk to you, so she asked me to give her your phone number. You two can chat online first. If you hit it off, you can figure out where to go from there.”“Okay.”Just as Diana had said, Emily was an incredibly sweet girl. She was lively, but not so energetic that I found it overwhelming. More importantly, she was thoughtful and understanding. When I told her honestly that I was not ready to throw myself into a new relationship right away, she did not press me about when my previous relationship had started or what had happened.Instead, she admired me for being honest. She told me she could wait.“I really enjoy talking to you. Even if we never become a couple, I’d still like to be your friend. So why don’t we just talk and see where things go? No pressure.”I agreed. The following month, when I was leaving for school

However, what I did not expect was that this time, Yvette simply left Edmund’s situation to her assistant. She followed me all the way to the banquet.Diana looked surprised when she saw us arrive together. “You two came together?”Afraid Yvette might say something, I casually lied to her that we ran into each other at the entrance.Diana did not ask any more questions. She spent the evening introducing me to people and helping me make connections.Yvette simply followed us quietly the entire time without saying a word.Once the business conversations finally started winding down, Diana pointed toward a young woman across the room.“That’s the girl I told you about, the one I wanted you to meet. Want me to take you over and introduce you?”Yvette, who had been silent all evening, finally could not take it anymore. She suddenly grabbed my arm, stopping me from walking forward. “You’re really going on a blind date?”Diana laughed. “He’s twenty-five. Isn’t dating perfectly norma

After returning home, I was busy adjusting to the time difference and slept for almost half the day. When I woke up, I saw a string of missed calls and text messages from Yvette.I deleted them all before opening Diana’s messages.[I’m heading to the office. There’s food in the fridge. I left your outfit for tonight’s company banquet in the dressing room.]Diana took me to the company’s annual banquet every year. She had always said she had no plans to get married, and that the company would be mine sooner or later. As such, she wanted me to get familiar with the business as soon as possible. When I opened the door, I found Yvette crouching outside.I had no idea how long she had been there. The moment she saw me, she hurriedly stood up, only to nearly stumble to the ground. She awkwardly ran a hand through her hair. “My leg fell asleep.”It was one of her usual little gestures. Back then, I would have found it incredibly cute.I would have pulled her into my arms and kissed

I stood in the doorway, completely still for a long time. The truth was, I was not smart at all. If I had been, I would not have spent my entire previous life believing Yvette loved me, even until the day I died.Even before our marriage, Edmund had come to me. Everything he confessed tonight was something I had already heard in my previous life.Back then, he begged me to let Yvette go.“Yvette and I have loved each other for seven years. I’m the only one in her heart. The only reason she agreed to marry you is because you fell out with your family over her, and she felt guilty about it. Do you really think that kind of pity can carry the two of you through a lifetime together?”Back then, I answered him without hesitation, “It can. Yvette loves me. She’ll love me for the rest of her life.”However, as time went on, she grew more and more impatient with me, to the point where she could barely stand to see me.However, with Edmund, she was endlessly gentle.Once, I went to pick

Diana came over carrying a bowl of noodles.“What are you two talking about? Why aren’t you inside?”Yvette instinctively took half a step back, looking a little awkward. “Nothing.”I took the initiative to explain, “Ms. Yvette feels awkward because she didn’t accept Mr. Edmund’s proposal right away. She was asking me what she should do.”Darkness flashed across Yvette’s eyes. She stepped forward and grabbed my hand hard.“Do you even know what you’re saying? Do you really want to push me away that badly?”The wound I had just bandaged tore open again from the force of her grip.I swallowed the pain and smiled. “You don’t like Mr. Edmund? If that’s the case, why didn’t you reject him right away?”She froze for a moment. Her gaze looked conflicted.I laughed bitterly to myself. So she really did love Edmund. Then what right did she have to come looking for me now? Did she think I was some kind of fool who would happily let her hurt me over and over again?Diana smiled and us

Diana took two stunned steps backward and bumped into me. She grabbed my hand so tightly that her fingers nearly dug into my skin. “Luke, is what she said true?” She even called me by my childhood nickname.I could not help laughing. “How could it be? You’re my aunt. If I had a girlfriend, wouldn’t you know?”Yvette started toward us, her lips parting as though she wanted to say something.Suddenly, Edmund stumbled and fell. He clutched his ankle with one hand and reached out with the other. “Eve, I think something bit me.”Under the flickering lights, I could see blood on his hand.We were near the beach. It was not unusual for there to be bugs or even scorpions around.I had to admit, Edmund really knew Yvette. The moment she heard he had been bitten, I ceased to matter. She hurried over and helped him to his feet, rushing past me. “I’m taking you to the infirmary. Don’t worry. You’ll be fine.”When she walked past me, she paused for a second.“Lucas, wait here. We’ll talk
