Chapter 3

Autor: No Mood Nano
Yvette froze for a moment, her voice suddenly turning cold. “What exactly are you trying to say?”

I was about to explain, but she cut me off impatiently. “Do you really have to make a scene like this every time?”

“You’re twenty-five. You’re not a child anymore. Can you stop acting so immature? Do you have any idea how exhausting it is to keep having to comfort you?”

Suddenly, I did not feel like explaining myself anymore. I hung up the call.

Ever since I got together with her, our eight-year age gap had always been a knot in my heart. As such, I was always careful to make myself seem mature. I never let myself act childish around her.

Yvette wanted to focus on her career, so I stayed quietly behind her and supported her. She drank at business dinners and flirted with other men, and I pretended not to notice.

In the end, I had only succeeded in turning myself into a joke.

I did not know if it was because I never went to pick up my things, but Yvette actually came to my house herself.

She handed me a gift box. “I saw this on the way here. You’ve always liked this kind of thing. Keep it.”

“Thanks.”

I took it politely, went straight back to my room, and tossed it into the trash.

The sound of porcelain shattering reminded me that the box really did contain the cup I had left at Yvette’s place.

When I came back out, Diana had already made dinner. The three of us had just sat down when the doorbell rang.

Edmund stood outside with a bright smile. “Sorry I’m late.” He apologized, but his eyes never left Yvette.

Diana immediately understood what was going on and warmly invited him inside.

Yvette suddenly rose to her feet and moved to the seat beside me. “Can I sit here?”

Her eyes stayed fixed on mine, as though she were searching for even the slightest hint of jealousy or anger. However, there was nothing.

Diana brought Edmund toward the dining table, then froze for a moment when she saw where I was sitting.

She hurried over, pulled me to her side, and whispered to Yvette with a disgruntled look.

“What am I supposed to do, sitting between your ex-boyfriend and the guy you’re supposedly flirting with? It’s obvious Edmund came here for you tonight. Don’t screw this up.”

Edmund naturally took the seat beside Yvette.

“Lucas, do you like the gift box I picked out for you? I chose everything myself.”

His words were practically a declaration of war, a reminder that his place in Yvette’s heart was anything but ordinary.

I simply gave him a cool, “Thanks.”

Diana laughed. “You two still treat him like a kid. I’m just hoping he’ll start dating soon. That way, when he’s out…”

“Diana!”

I cut her off. “Weren’t you going to introduce me to someone before?”

Diana stared at me in shock. “You agreed to meet her? Then I’ll call and arrange it right now. You need to make a good impression on the first date. I’ll have a designer come over and make you two custom suits tomorrow. And we’ll need to book a stylist, too.”

Yvette’s expression grew darker by the second. She stared at me without blinking. “You’re going on a blind date?”

“Yeah. Do you know any nice girls you could introduce me to, Ms. Yvette?”

Yvette’s fingers tightened around her cutleries, trembling slightly.

Edmund noticed and casually remarked, as though it were nothing. “Actually, Eve is only two years older than Lucas. You two look pretty good together.”

Yvette shot to her feet. “Don’t spout nonsense. He’s my junior!”

I nodded. “Ms. Yvette is like an aunt to me. Mr. Edmund, that’s not really appropriate.”

I barely remember how dinner ended that night. All I remember is that after that day, Yvette never contacted me again.

Diana, however, told me something. “Edmund says he wants to win Yvette back. He asked us to help him. You’re not too busy these days, so come with me.”

I agreed without hesitation. “Sure.”

Yvette should be pretty happy that I was helping her get back together with her ex-boyfriend, right?

I had no objections to Diana’s arrangements.Just before we finished talking, she suddenly said, “Oh, by the way. That girl from tonight didn’t get a chance to talk to you, so she asked me to give her your phone number. You two can chat online first. If you hit it off, you can figure out where to go from there.”“Okay.”Just as Diana had said, Emily was an incredibly sweet girl. She was lively, but not so energetic that I found it overwhelming. More importantly, she was thoughtful and understanding. When I told her honestly that I was not ready to throw myself into a new relationship right away, she did not press me about when my previous relationship had started or what had happened.Instead, she admired me for being honest. She told me she could wait.“I really enjoy talking to you. Even if we never become a couple, I’d still like to be your friend. So why don’t we just talk and see where things go? No pressure.”I agreed. The following month, when I was leaving for school

However, what I did not expect was that this time, Yvette simply left Edmund’s situation to her assistant. She followed me all the way to the banquet.Diana looked surprised when she saw us arrive together. “You two came together?”Afraid Yvette might say something, I casually lied to her that we ran into each other at the entrance.Diana did not ask any more questions. She spent the evening introducing me to people and helping me make connections.Yvette simply followed us quietly the entire time without saying a word.Once the business conversations finally started winding down, Diana pointed toward a young woman across the room.“That’s the girl I told you about, the one I wanted you to meet. Want me to take you over and introduce you?”Yvette, who had been silent all evening, finally could not take it anymore. She suddenly grabbed my arm, stopping me from walking forward. “You’re really going on a blind date?”Diana laughed. “He’s twenty-five. Isn’t dating perfectly norma

After returning home, I was busy adjusting to the time difference and slept for almost half the day. When I woke up, I saw a string of missed calls and text messages from Yvette.I deleted them all before opening Diana’s messages.[I’m heading to the office. There’s food in the fridge. I left your outfit for tonight’s company banquet in the dressing room.]Diana took me to the company’s annual banquet every year. She had always said she had no plans to get married, and that the company would be mine sooner or later. As such, she wanted me to get familiar with the business as soon as possible. When I opened the door, I found Yvette crouching outside.I had no idea how long she had been there. The moment she saw me, she hurriedly stood up, only to nearly stumble to the ground. She awkwardly ran a hand through her hair. “My leg fell asleep.”It was one of her usual little gestures. Back then, I would have found it incredibly cute.I would have pulled her into my arms and kissed

I stood in the doorway, completely still for a long time. The truth was, I was not smart at all. If I had been, I would not have spent my entire previous life believing Yvette loved me, even until the day I died.Even before our marriage, Edmund had come to me. Everything he confessed tonight was something I had already heard in my previous life.Back then, he begged me to let Yvette go.“Yvette and I have loved each other for seven years. I’m the only one in her heart. The only reason she agreed to marry you is because you fell out with your family over her, and she felt guilty about it. Do you really think that kind of pity can carry the two of you through a lifetime together?”Back then, I answered him without hesitation, “It can. Yvette loves me. She’ll love me for the rest of her life.”However, as time went on, she grew more and more impatient with me, to the point where she could barely stand to see me.However, with Edmund, she was endlessly gentle.Once, I went to pick

Diana came over carrying a bowl of noodles.“What are you two talking about? Why aren’t you inside?”Yvette instinctively took half a step back, looking a little awkward. “Nothing.”I took the initiative to explain, “Ms. Yvette feels awkward because she didn’t accept Mr. Edmund’s proposal right away. She was asking me what she should do.”Darkness flashed across Yvette’s eyes. She stepped forward and grabbed my hand hard.“Do you even know what you’re saying? Do you really want to push me away that badly?”The wound I had just bandaged tore open again from the force of her grip.I swallowed the pain and smiled. “You don’t like Mr. Edmund? If that’s the case, why didn’t you reject him right away?”She froze for a moment. Her gaze looked conflicted.I laughed bitterly to myself. So she really did love Edmund. Then what right did she have to come looking for me now? Did she think I was some kind of fool who would happily let her hurt me over and over again?Diana smiled and us

Diana took two stunned steps backward and bumped into me. She grabbed my hand so tightly that her fingers nearly dug into my skin. “Luke, is what she said true?” She even called me by my childhood nickname.I could not help laughing. “How could it be? You’re my aunt. If I had a girlfriend, wouldn’t you know?”Yvette started toward us, her lips parting as though she wanted to say something.Suddenly, Edmund stumbled and fell. He clutched his ankle with one hand and reached out with the other. “Eve, I think something bit me.”Under the flickering lights, I could see blood on his hand.We were near the beach. It was not unusual for there to be bugs or even scorpions around.I had to admit, Edmund really knew Yvette. The moment she heard he had been bitten, I ceased to matter. She hurried over and helped him to his feet, rushing past me. “I’m taking you to the infirmary. Don’t worry. You’ll be fine.”When she walked past me, she paused for a second.“Lucas, wait here. We’ll talk
