Chapter 6

As Dan turned off the road, I realised we were there, the entrance to the drive was 8-foot concrete pillars with ornate steel gates wide open. On either side of the gates were ushers guiding cars up the drive. The drive seemed never ending with a row of cars in front of ours. Each car was asked for a copy of their invitation, which Clare happily provided. Our doors were opened by ushers and the keys taken from Dan for them to park the car. The doorway was almost half the size of our little house. The grandeur of the property was more than I could have imagined. Waiters were waiting at the doorway with trays of drinks for you to select from. Claire handed me a glass as I marveled at the hall as it opened up.

The entrance alone was almost as big as our house. I looked around slowly taking in my surroundings. There were security guards at the bottom of the stairs stopping anyone from exploring, along with on some doors off to the left of the hallway. The doors on the right were open and looked like they led into a large sitting area where a group of people had gathered. I followed the crowd through the hall not realising Clarie was already quite a way in front of me. To the left as I walked past the grand staircase, was the kitchen where all the waiters were entering and exiting with different entrees and drinks. On the right was a large open room with stands throughout and lots of security. I realised this was where the auction items were being held. There was a red rope blocking the room off and a sign stating it opened at 8pm and bidding closes at 10pm.

I looked around and could not see Claire anywhere or Dan. Slightly panicked I followed the crowd to the sound of the music outside the back of the house. I walked out onto a veranda filled with seating overlooking the gardens where the DJ and dance floor were located. There were what seemed like a hundred people already filled across the garden and various activities going off like fire dancers and fire breathers.

I found a table to the side that was empty and took a seat. I scoured the gardens and there she was, a bright red dress, mask and shoes, it was Claire right in the middle of the dance floor. I smiled watching her but became very conscious that I was now alone somewhere I knew no one else. Clare was so infectious she already had a large group of people around her dancing and the floor was starting to fill up nicely. I took a slow sip of my drink deciding whether to join her or stay where I was. For now, I do not want to move.

After several songs, Claire was still dancing up a storm. I took the last sip of my drink and was ready to find a way to leave and get home when he appeared. Talk, dark, handsome, sharp black suit, crisp white shirt, jet black, smooth solid block black mask with finite detail you could only see as light hit it. My breath caught in my throat as I looked up at him.

“Do you mind if I join you?” The voice was smooth and enchanting.

I gestured to the seat across from me unable to find my voice. I tried to clear my throat, “Of course, feel free.” my voice still came out shaky.

He smiled and took a seat opposite me. His gaze was fixed on mine. I looked over to the dance floor to still see Claire dancing, I quickly scanned the area around me unsure what I was looking for.

“I haven’t stolen the seat from your date, have I?” he asked.

I shook my head, “No date, although I am a plus one, I'm here with my roommate.”

He smiled, seemingly pleased with my answer.

“I don’t mind moving, if you’re date would like to come and join you?” I said nervously.

“What makes you think I have a date?” He smirked.

For some reason his gaze flustered me, and my mind was foggy, I could not think of an answer.

“I am here alone tonight, no date you need to move for.” He smirked again, almost as if he knew he was influencing me.

“I was actually about to call a cab and head home.” I blurted out.

“Leaving so soon? The party has barely started.” His expression changed to disappointment.

“My roommate kind of abandoned me for the dance floor down there and I don’t know anyone else here. In all honesty I was feeling a little out of place.”

“Which one is she?” he asked intrigued.

“The one all in red.”

“I see, yes, she does seem to be the life of the dance floor currently. But to be honest with these masks, does anyone really know who anyone else is unless they came together?” he smiled again.

His smile was infectious and put me at ease. “I guess not.” I agreed.

“Ok, what if I showed you a different side to this party?”

I tilted my head intrigued.

He stood up from the table and held out his hand for me. “Join me on a walk?”

Every instinct in me wanted to go with him but my lack of confidence was screaming it was a set up.

“Why me?” I asked.

“Why not,” he answered.

“Well, I guess I cannot argue with that type of reasoning.” I laughed.

  • Thorn   Chapter 52

We arrived early and arrived before his siblings. As he opened the door the smell of food filled the air. We both had handfuls of bags when he called out for his parents. He walked me into the living room and placed down all the bags in the corner around the tree. Their tree was so big I couldn’t help but stare.“Leila,” his mother called. I turned to see her arms open wide, I walked into her embrace, “Merry Christmas Lesley.”Nick hugged his father and then he turned to me and opened his arms, “Merry Christmas, Leila.”I hugged him, “Merry Christmas Richard.”There was some small talk before Nick poured himself and his father a drink from the decanter on the table. I offered Lesley a hand in the kitchen. I peeled and cut some vegetables up while she checked on the meats. We talked a little about day-to-day life but most of the talk was based around food and my history with cooking. I have never declared myself a chef, but I do know how to cook and leave the taste of it to people's

  • Thorn   Chapter 51

Christmas day was here. This was the first Christmas in a long time I had been looking forward to. I was wide awake early just like when I was a kid. I was up, showered, dressed and prepping before Nick even woke up. He walked out to find me looking a little disheveled. “Merry Christmas, beautiful.” “Merry Christmas,” I jumped into his arms knocking him down onto the sofa. We both burst out laughing. “You are full of energy this morning.” “And you are not,” I pouted and rubbed my nose onto his. “I guess I didn’t sleep well.” “How come?” He shrugged. “Guess Christmas has made me nervous this year. It’s a little different being the youngest and taking someone with me for the first time. Especially when you are so important to me.” “Aww, I’m sure it will be alright.” I remembered his presents. “Wait here,” I said as I planted a quick kiss on his lips. I headed to the tree and pulled out his presents. I placed them on his knee and sat next to him. I watched as he opened

Saturday morning, I awoke feeling exhausted from the previous night’s events accompanied by lack of sleep. I wrapped myself up in the quilt and wondered where Nick was as he walked back into the room. He was still in his boxers and climbed back into bed. I snuggled into his chest with a yawn. “My parents are having the whole family for Christmas and would like us to join them.” He spoke.I perked up and leaned up on my elbow looking at him. “Where did that come from?”“I know we haven’t discussed Christmas. I don’t know if you have any sort of traditions like your cute birthday interview or anything. My family always try and get together at Christmas just because we spend most of the year scattered across country.”“If I'm honest it’s normally a strange time of year. Claire’s parents sometimes celebrate and sometimes are out of the country on business so it’s normally just me and Claire, so I haven’t thought about it.”“How would you feel about joining me and my family for Christmas

I rolled my eyes at Nick who looked confused. “I’m sorry for this.” I spoke.“For what?” He asked more confused.“We have a bit of a strange birthday tradition.”“Okay folks, so some of you may not have been to one of our birthday’s before and we have a bit of a tradition that we do every year without fail. Now this may seem a little strange but bear with us.” She paused, searching for me. “Leila!” She called again. I found my way through the crowd and stood next to her. We shook hands and nodded at each other. “So, those of you who weren’t sure, this is Leila Clarke and today is her birthday. Now Leila, I know this year has been a strange one to say the least. There have been a lot of highs and lows but that is not going to stop us. So, are you ready for your interview?”“Yes, Claire I am ready,” I answered as if I was on a TV game show. “It’s going to be interesting to see how your answers have changed from last year, and I think I already know some of them.” She laughed. “Ok,

  • Thorn   Chapter 48

The day was tedious, everyone bid me happy birthday. The last meeting of the day stayed on track, and we resolved the agenda in half the time I thought it would take. My boss told me to ‘get off home and enjoy your birthday’. Because I left early, I missed all the traffic. It was a nice drive home for a change. I thought I may have beaten Nick home, but he was in the study working hard. As he saw me, he slammed the laptop shut and claimed the day was done. I headed for the shower, hoping Nick would follow, but he didn’t. As I came back, I found he had put some clothes out for me, there was a note attached. ‘Claire’s orders 😅’ I dressed and found Nick waiting in the living room for me.“Happy birthday,” he whispered a kiss against my lips.“Let’s get this done with.”He pulled me in close, “Trust me, I wish we didn’t have to go so I could do all kinds of stuff to you right now.”“Hmmm, now I definitely don’t want to go.”“Claire is expecting us. How about we get through it, and I will

  • Thorn   chapter 47

The weeks came and went, and it wasn’t long until my birthday. Claire was organising a birthday party for me. I always hated making a fuss on my birthday but this year even more so with it being such a tough year. It also dawned on me that I didn’t know what Nick’s birthday was and he didn’t know mine. We had been so caught up in just being in love and together I forgot there were important details missing again. That night when I got home from work, I found Nick in the kitchen cooking dinner. I dropped my bag by the door and headed to the kitchen and took a seat at the island.“Hey beautiful.” He smiled happy to see me. “Hey,” I sounded deflated.“What’s up? Hard day at work?”“Nope works all good.” “Come on, spill it.”“Well, Claire is throwing a party tomorrow night and would like our attendance.”“Ok, what’s the party for?”“Before I answer can I ask you something?”“Of course.”“When is your birthday?”He laughed, “How have we got this far without that question?”“I have no i
