LOGINClaire had made lots of decisions during the day, and as she was going through the rails again, I decided to look through a rail myself. There was a black dress that caught my eye. Claire came over with an arm full of dresses and lumped them into my arms, while her back was turned, I picked up the black one I was looking at and added it to the pile. I entered the changing room and hung them all up on the wall. I singled out the black dress and hung that on the opposite side of the room. It looked very low cut in the front but was not as bad as others I had seen nor like what Claire had chosen. One by one I tried Claire’s dresses on and stepped out of the changing room. One by one Claire turned her nose up at all of them.
“I refuse to admit this is hopeless. We must find you a dress.” Her frustration was coming through into her voice now. “There’s still one more dress left, Claire.” “That’s everything I gave you though?” She sounded confused. “I saw something and picked it up, I liked it. Which says a lot for me to like a dress, however I have no idea if it will look any good on though.” “Go, go, go!” she exclaimed as she pushed me back into the changing room. I slid the dress on. It was a black waterfall dress. The top was adorned with sequins making it sparkle in the light, with a satin waist band, out of the waist band flowed a mix of materials. The shortest part at the front of the dress stopped just above my knees with the back flowing down in a ripple effect to the floor. I zipped it up and looked in the mirror. It was gorgeous, never had I felt so comfortable in a dress before. “Are you ready yet?” Claire’s voice carried impatience. “Ok, but I need your honest opinion.” “Yes, yes of course,” she hurried. I stepped out of the dressing room. Claire’s mouth fell wide open. “Leila,” she paused, “you look absolutely incredible.” “Do you really think so?” “You are going to have every guy at that ball eating out of your hand.” “Why do you sound disappointed?” I asked. “Because I didn’t choose this for you. I can’t believe I overlooked something that would look this stunning on you.” She paused again. “This is your dress, Leila.” she smiled. “All we need now are your shoes and a mask for both of us.” Claire disappeared into the shop and returned holding some strappy black heels with a Diamontae embellishment on the buckle. I slipped my feet into them and saw Claire on the verge of tears. “Claire it’s only a ball dress, if you’re almost crying now what you going to be like if I ever get married.” I laughed. “Don’t even get me started on that. You look stunning.” I changed back into my clothes and handed the dress and shoes over to Claire. The only part of our outfits was the mask that was required. Claire paid and we headed back to the car. “What about masks?” I asked. “Don’t worry I will order them when I get home, and they will be delivered before the ball.” “Do I not get to choose? Because apparently, I have good taste in what suits me, you know,” I joked. “You may be correct on that and have shown me a thing or two in the last few hours but no, you do not get to choose the mask. I had an idea of one for you and now with this dress it will be the perfect fit.” I wrinkled my nose at her as we headed out of the store. As we arrived back, I took my dress and hung it in front of my wardrobe. I couldn’t stop staring at it and wanted to keep it on show while I could. That evening, I was feeling sentimental and pulled out a box from under my bed. I sat on my bed and lifted the lid slowly. It had been so long since I had opened the box, I had almost forgotten what was inside. There were several little trinkets from my childhood but the most important item out of everything was the photo album at the bottom. I lifted it out slowly and placed the box to one side. I opened it to the first page. Inside the cover was a handwritten note from my mother. Leila, my love, my daughter, my light in the darkness. Fill this with all the happy memories throughout your life. Fill this with everything you can to retain the happiness in life. And if the times get truly dark, remember stars cannot shine without the darkness. Shine bright my little star. Love you to the moon and back xxWe arrived early and arrived before his siblings. As he opened the door the smell of food filled the air. We both had handfuls of bags when he called out for his parents. He walked me into the living room and placed down all the bags in the corner around the tree. Their tree was so big I couldn’t help but stare.“Leila,” his mother called. I turned to see her arms open wide, I walked into her embrace, “Merry Christmas Lesley.”Nick hugged his father and then he turned to me and opened his arms, “Merry Christmas, Leila.”I hugged him, “Merry Christmas Richard.”There was some small talk before Nick poured himself and his father a drink from the decanter on the table. I offered Lesley a hand in the kitchen. I peeled and cut some vegetables up while she checked on the meats. We talked a little about day-to-day life but most of the talk was based around food and my history with cooking. I have never declared myself a chef, but I do know how to cook and leave the taste of it to people's
Christmas day was here. This was the first Christmas in a long time I had been looking forward to. I was wide awake early just like when I was a kid. I was up, showered, dressed and prepping before Nick even woke up. He walked out to find me looking a little disheveled. “Merry Christmas, beautiful.” “Merry Christmas,” I jumped into his arms knocking him down onto the sofa. We both burst out laughing. “You are full of energy this morning.” “And you are not,” I pouted and rubbed my nose onto his. “I guess I didn’t sleep well.” “How come?” He shrugged. “Guess Christmas has made me nervous this year. It’s a little different being the youngest and taking someone with me for the first time. Especially when you are so important to me.” “Aww, I’m sure it will be alright.” I remembered his presents. “Wait here,” I said as I planted a quick kiss on his lips. I headed to the tree and pulled out his presents. I placed them on his knee and sat next to him. I watched as he opened
Saturday morning, I awoke feeling exhausted from the previous night’s events accompanied by lack of sleep. I wrapped myself up in the quilt and wondered where Nick was as he walked back into the room. He was still in his boxers and climbed back into bed. I snuggled into his chest with a yawn. “My parents are having the whole family for Christmas and would like us to join them.” He spoke.I perked up and leaned up on my elbow looking at him. “Where did that come from?”“I know we haven’t discussed Christmas. I don’t know if you have any sort of traditions like your cute birthday interview or anything. My family always try and get together at Christmas just because we spend most of the year scattered across country.”“If I'm honest it’s normally a strange time of year. Claire’s parents sometimes celebrate and sometimes are out of the country on business so it’s normally just me and Claire, so I haven’t thought about it.”“How would you feel about joining me and my family for Christmas
I rolled my eyes at Nick who looked confused. “I’m sorry for this.” I spoke.“For what?” He asked more confused.“We have a bit of a strange birthday tradition.”“Okay folks, so some of you may not have been to one of our birthday’s before and we have a bit of a tradition that we do every year without fail. Now this may seem a little strange but bear with us.” She paused, searching for me. “Leila!” She called again. I found my way through the crowd and stood next to her. We shook hands and nodded at each other. “So, those of you who weren’t sure, this is Leila Clarke and today is her birthday. Now Leila, I know this year has been a strange one to say the least. There have been a lot of highs and lows but that is not going to stop us. So, are you ready for your interview?”“Yes, Claire I am ready,” I answered as if I was on a TV game show. “It’s going to be interesting to see how your answers have changed from last year, and I think I already know some of them.” She laughed. “Ok,
The day was tedious, everyone bid me happy birthday. The last meeting of the day stayed on track, and we resolved the agenda in half the time I thought it would take. My boss told me to ‘get off home and enjoy your birthday’. Because I left early, I missed all the traffic. It was a nice drive home for a change. I thought I may have beaten Nick home, but he was in the study working hard. As he saw me, he slammed the laptop shut and claimed the day was done. I headed for the shower, hoping Nick would follow, but he didn’t. As I came back, I found he had put some clothes out for me, there was a note attached. ‘Claire’s orders 😅’ I dressed and found Nick waiting in the living room for me.“Happy birthday,” he whispered a kiss against my lips.“Let’s get this done with.”He pulled me in close, “Trust me, I wish we didn’t have to go so I could do all kinds of stuff to you right now.”“Hmmm, now I definitely don’t want to go.”“Claire is expecting us. How about we get through it, and I will
The weeks came and went, and it wasn’t long until my birthday. Claire was organising a birthday party for me. I always hated making a fuss on my birthday but this year even more so with it being such a tough year. It also dawned on me that I didn’t know what Nick’s birthday was and he didn’t know mine. We had been so caught up in just being in love and together I forgot there were important details missing again. That night when I got home from work, I found Nick in the kitchen cooking dinner. I dropped my bag by the door and headed to the kitchen and took a seat at the island.“Hey beautiful.” He smiled happy to see me. “Hey,” I sounded deflated.“What’s up? Hard day at work?”“Nope works all good.” “Come on, spill it.”“Well, Claire is throwing a party tomorrow night and would like our attendance.”“Ok, what’s the party for?”“Before I answer can I ask you something?”“Of course.”“When is your birthday?”He laughed, “How have we got this far without that question?”“I have no i
