Chapter 3

Autor: Stars
The pills had a trace of wolfsbane in them. One or two were fine. Too many and you'd be poisoned. Enough of them, and you'd drop dead on the spot.

Serena's engagement was over now. So I could finally die in peace, couldn't I?

Logan, who'd been so cold a second ago, came apart. He shouted for the healer and jammed his fingers into my mouth, trying to make me throw up.

“Have you lost your mind? Damien ends the bond and now you're throwing your life away over it? He doesn't love you. He never has. Serena's the only one he wants. Why can't you get that through your head?”

The healer rushed me into surgery to pump my stomach. They forced a tube down my throat, and by the time it was over, I felt half dead.

Logan frowned at the wrecked state of me and reached out, as if to touch my cheek, when Owen suddenly cried out, his face drained of color.

“The Alpha just mind-linked me,” he said. “He says to bring Elena to the pack hall. Right now. Serena's gone.”

Logan's face darkened. The hand that had almost touched my cheek turned cold, and struck me instead. “All this dying act was just cover for kidnapping Serena. Where is she? Tell me where you're keeping her.”

Serena was missing?

Good, honestly. They loved her so much. If I swore I'd taken her, maybe one of them would lose his temper and finish me off.

They hauled me to the pack hall and threw me down hard on the floor.

Damien stared down at me, cold. “Where's Serena?”

I lifted my head slowly and looked at him, the man who'd once sworn before the Moon Goddess to love and keep me for life. Now he looked like he wanted to tear me apart.

Years ago, someone had drugged Damien and forced his rut to come early. I'd given him my body to break it.

When he came back to himself, he promised to do right by me, to take his mate vows with me and make me his Luna.

He said it wasn't some heat-of-the-moment thing. He said he really wanted me.

Then Serena showed up, and everything changed. She was scared of thunder, so he stayed by her side all night through the storms.

She liked my engagement ring, so he had an identical one made for her. For her birthday, he threw the grandest celebration the pack had ever seen, right on the sacred altar.

Even when people objected, saying the altar was for the Alpha and the Luna alone, Damien did it anyway. All he cared about was making Serena happy. Nothing else mattered.

It was the same now. He drew a silver knife and pressed the edge to my throat. “Don't try anything. Tell me, where is Serena?”

I curled my lips into a mocking smile. “You want to know where she is? Then kill me. Kill me, and you'll find out.”

I leaned into the blade. Damien flinched back, again and again. “You think I won't do it?”

“Then get on with it. Serena's out there waiting to be rescued. You really think I'd let her off easy, as much as I hate her?” I held his eyes. “You don't know the half of it. I hired a pack of rogues. Real monsters, the kind that'll swallow you whole. Want to guess what they're doing with her right now, locked in a room together?”

My taunting got to him. His hand shook around the hilt, his eyes shot through with red. At last the blade drifted down from my throat until the silver tip hovered a fingernail's width above my heart.

Then the knife hit the floor with a clang.

He sucked in a breath and turned away. “Give her the potion.”

I didn't know what he meant, until his assistant brought over a vial. “It's a truth potion. The witch brewed it. One sip and she'll tell us everything.”

That sent a jolt of panic through me. The Moon Goddess had one rule: no one could ever learn I'd crossed into this world. If they did, I'd never get home.

I clamped my jaw shut and refused to open it. Seeing how stubborn I was, Damien ordered the assistant to pinch my nose closed.

With no air, my body betrayed me and my mouth fell open, and in that instant the assistant poured the whole vial down my throat.

I tried to gag it back up, but it was too late. My lips were already moving on their own.

“I... I'm not the one who took Serena.”

Damien frowned. “If it wasn't you, why did you confess to it?”

“Because—”

I didn't let myself finish. I snatched the silver knife from where it had fallen and drove it into my own chest.

Every eye in the room went wide.

If I died, the secret would die with me. No one would ever know.

And in the moment I fell, I heard Serena's voice.

“Oh, you're all here. Why is there so much blood?”

Then came Damien's panicked shouting. Whatever they said after that, I never heard it.

It was a relief. I could finally go home.

  • Three Alphas’ Regret After I Died   Chapter 8

Serena, the sweet, innocent thing everyone had always taken her for, said something like that the moment the potion hit. Even Logan, who'd helped raise her, was shaken. She kept going. “I left on my own back then. Elena had nothing to do with it. Later I was jealous, jealous that she got to take her mate vows with Damien, so I smeared her name.”The truth hit Owen and his whole body went rigid. Only now did he see that they'd wronged Elena all these years, and regret spread through his chest like a stain.I'd already known the truth. But hearing it from Serena's own mouth, I still clenched my fists until they shook.Serena clamped both hands over her mouth, trying to make herself stop. But once you've drunk a truth potion, it isn't so easily stopped. Her mouth no longer seemed to belong to her. The truth just kept pouring out.“The kidnapping was a show too. I set the whole thing up. I can't believe you all fell for something that full of holes. No wonder you're a pack of idiots. Elena

Before I could get a good look, Serena yanked the phone away, flustered. “Something came up. You'll have to eat alone tonight.” And with that, she hurried off in a panic. That message planted a doubt in me. I kept thinking back to the day I made Elena drink the truth potion. She'd said she hadn't taken Serena, so why had she confessed to it before? And another thing: who had put out the story that Elena kidnapped Serena in the first place? The more I turned it over, the more wrong it felt. I mind-linked my assistant and told him to dig into the whole thing, start to finish, along with the truth behind what happened five years ago, when Serena claimed Elena had threatened her into leaving.Once I'd laid it all out for him, I lay back on the couch and looked over the wreck I'd made of my life so far. I asked myself, over and over: I'd gotten Serena, but was I actually happy? Did I really feel nothing for Elena? The ache buried deepest in me gave the answer. No.All these years, I'd never

She looked exactly as she had that afternoon. Except that afternoon, there'd still been a flicker of life in her. Now Elena lay in the cold steel drawer, no breath, no heartbeat, her body cold to the touch. How could this happen? Could you really bear to die? Could you really bear to leave us behind? Why? Why does my chest hurt this much?“Elena, do you think dying wipes out what you did to Serena? You don't get to die. I won't let you die!” I screamed it, hysterical. “Wake up. Wake up, damn you.”But Elena had been gone a long time, and she couldn't hear a word I said.I broke down on my knees, the tears coming and refusing to stop. “Please. Please wake up. Just wake up, and I'll take you back as my mate. I swear it.”Still, no answer.I cried myself out and fell asleep right there on the cold floor.Somewhere in the haze, I think I dreamed. No, it wasn't a dream. It was the night I first met Elena, five years ago.Someone had set me up, forcing my rut on early. If it wasn't eased, it

Damien's POVIn that moment, I couldn't react at all. Not until the blood came pouring out of Elena did I snap out of it.“Elena, what are you doing?” I scooped her up and pressed my hand hard against the wound, but the blood wouldn't stop. “Someone, call for help, now.”Owen fumbled for his phone to call an ambulance. Logan went scrambling for a first-aid kit. Everyone crowded around Elena. No one noticed Serena, who'd just walked back in.She stamped her little heels, sulking. “I've been back for ages and you're all ignoring me. Clearly Elena's the one who matters to you. Fine. I'll just go. And I'll never come back.”A second ago I'd been frantic. Now, just like that, I went calm.Right. I'd almost let her fool me again. This was just another one of Elena's tricks. Someone that cunning would never actually let herself die.Seeing Serena standing there, ignored, made me sick with guilt. I hurried over and pulled her into my arms. “I'm sorry, Serena. I wasn't thinking. Don't be angry.

By then I'd spent longer in the world of wolves than I ever had in my own. The memories of home had blurred at the edges, but I still remembered my mother's gentle face, my father's big, warm hands, and how every holiday the three of us crowded into our tiny kitchen, each with our own job, putting together a feast.“Come home, sweetheart, and I'll cook all your favorites. Wherever you are, I'll always be waiting for you.”Mom.A tear slid down my cheek. Then I felt a cool hand brush it gently from the corner of my eye.I opened my eyes slowly, and there was a face I knew: my mother, exactly as I remembered her, so gentle.“I keep telling you not to fall asleep in the living room. Look, the cold's made your eyes water. I made dinner. Eat something, then go sleep in your own bed.”Looking at the face I'd ached for, day and night, I felt dazed. I couldn't tell if this was a dream or real. I reached out and touched her face. The warmth under my fingertips, the soft lines at the corners of
