The phone rang in the dark.

I came up out of sleep all at once, the way you do when some animal part of you has already understood that something is wrong. The screen glowed on the nightstand. An unfamiliar number. I almost let it ring out.

Then I remembered a bench by a gray pond, and a woman with white-knuckled hands.

"Hello?"

Silence. Then a breath, thin and uneven, and a voice so low I had to press the phone against my ear to hear it.

"Elena. It's me."

"Mia." I was sitting up before I'd dec

I noticed the car a block behind me and decided not to mind.It was the kind of thing you see only when you're not looking for it. A dark shape keeping a polite distance, never closing the gap, never leaving it. I'd been walking for the better part of an hour, through the small park and out along the avenue, and somewhere near the second corner I glanced back and there it was, idling at the curb. The driver sat behind the glass with his eyes on the road, like a man who happened to be going the same way.*I won't ask where you're going,* Adrian had said. He hadn't. He hadn't asked a single thing. But somebody, somewhere along the chain of that sentence, had decided that not asking wasn't the same as not caring.I turned back and kept walking. It was nearly a comfort.I was crossing a quiet side street, the kind with a florist and a closed bank and a few bare trees, when a voice behind me said my name."Elena."I stopped.I had known it was coming. I think I'd known since that night in

He said only one thing as I reached the door."The car is yours." His voice was low and even behind me. "Whenever you want it. I won't ask where you're going."I didn't turn around. I stood with my hand on the handle and my back to him and understood that if I looked at his face, I would stay, or I would say something I couldn't take back, and I wasn't ready for either. So I opened the door and walked out through the quiet hall and down in the elevator with my own reflection in the brass. The driver was waiting at the curb. He opened the door and didn't speak, and I was grateful. I sat in the back with the folder on my lap and watched the lights go by and didn't cry. I kept waiting for it. It didn't come.Mia was in the hall when I got in. She'd been sitting on the stairs, I think, with a book she wasn't reading, and she stood when she saw my face."Not tonight," I said. She nodded. That was all. She didn't ask what had happened, or offer me tea, or touch my arm. She just stepped asid

"Yes," Adrian said.It was one word, quiet and level. He didn't dress it. He didn't look away from me while he said it, though I could see what it cost him."Your family is part of why I came to your kitchen."The room didn't move. I think I'd expected it to. I'd expected the lamp to flicker, or the floor to tilt, some outward sign that the thing I'd been afraid of had just stepped out of the dark. But it all stayed exactly where it was, the long table, the spread pages, the soft circle of light, and I stood in the middle of it with my hands at my sides and felt nothing at all for a moment."Part," I said."Part.""Tell me the rest. All of what *part* means."He drew a breath. When he spoke, it was in the measured, careful voice I had heard him use in the dark of an unfinished floor, steady and low, the voice of a man holding something heavy at arm's length."I knew who you were before I knocked on that door. I'd known for a long time. You were Ash's wife. You were also the daughter o

I printed the pages before I left the house. It felt absurd, standing in my father's study at the old printer while it wheezed through the articles one at a time. But I wanted them in my hands. I didn't want to say it from memory, in a voice that might waver. I wanted the paper, the black type, the names where anyone could read them.I put the pages in a folder, and my father's letter on top of them, and I told Mia only that I'd be out for a while. She looked at the folder, and then at me, and didn't ask a single question. She just said, "Call if you need me," and I said I would. The car took me across the city in a silence I didn't try to fill. I watched the lights go by. I had told Adrian only one thing, in a single line I'd sent without deleting. *I need to see you tonight. Alone.* His reply had come almost at once. *Yes.* Nothing else.He opened the door himself.I'd half expected the careful blankness, the closed face he wore in boardrooms. Instead he stood in the hall in his shi

Mia found me at the desk.I hadn't meant to stay there so long. I'd been standing at the window for what felt like hours, watching the garden turn from gray to a deeper gray, and at some point my legs had stopped being willing. I'd turned back to the desk and sat down in my father's chair, and there I'd stayed. She knocked, softly, and came in, and stopped when she saw me. She'd been about to say something about dinner. I watched her put it away."Are you all right?" she asked."No." It came out calmly. "I think I will be."She stayed in the doorway a moment, a careful distance away. She didn't ask what I'd found. I'd have told her if she had, and I think she knew it, and she let the quiet do the asking instead."My father was braver than I knew," I said at last. "And lonelier.""That sounds like a good thing to have learned.""It doesn't feel like one.""No," Mia said. "It wouldn't."She stayed, without speaking, until the light had almost gone, and then she left a lamp on beside me

I should have stopped there. A sensible person would have.I'd found the thing I'd been looking for. I had my father's name beside Adrian's father's, two men standing together, and a date on which the matter was to be put before people who couldn't ignore it. I could have closed the laptop and gone to the kitchen and made myself eat something. I could have let it be enough. But the story had an ending, and I'd already seen its last line: *closed without a finding.* Between those two sentences there was a hole, and I couldn't leave it alone. So I kept going. The next piece was short. A few lines in the back of a column, no byline. It said the referral had not taken place. It didn't say why. It said that the company in question had, in the days before the matter was to have been raised, "taken steps," which the writer left tactfully unspecified. And it said, in a sentence so carefully built I could almost hear the lawyer's hand in it, that "those close to the matter were understood to h
