"Hello?"

My voice came out thinner than I meant it to. Nothing answered. Just the refrigerator humming down in the kitchen, the same sound it had made my whole childhood.

I pushed the door open with two fingers, keys still in my other hand. Then I remembered the lock had always stuck … My mother used to complain about it for years and never fixed it. I'd probably pulled it shut last time without checking.

I flipped the light on. Nothing out of place. I walked through anyway, room to room, fast,

  • Three Nights To Ruin My Husband    Chapter 7: Calling Her Sister

"Did you tell Ash where I am?"My sister answered on the second ring, and I didn't bother with hello. I was still staring at his text, my thumb hovering over it like it might rearrange itself into something less unsettling if I looked long enough."What? No. Why would I tell Ash anything right now.""He knows I'm at Mom and Dad's. I didn't tell him. You're the only person I told."A pause on the other end, long enough that I heard her shifting, probably sitting up in bed. "I didn't say a word to him, Elena, I swear. Maybe he just guessed. It's not exactly a mystery where you'd go.""Maybe." I didn't believe it, not fully, but I didn't have the energy to argue with the only person on my side tonight. "I don't know anymore. Nothing about tonight makes sense.""Tell me what happened. All of it."So I did. I told her about the meeting that wrapped early, the music behind the door, Mia's voice saying my name before I'd ever heard it. I told her about the voicemail, the texts from an unknow

Then I remembered the lock had always stuck … My mother used to complain about it for years and never fixed it. I'd probably pulled it shut last time without checking.I flipped the light on. Nothing out of place. I walked through anyway, room to room, fast, not really looking so much as confirming … and found nothing. No one. By the time I reached the kitchen again, my heartbeat had slowed enough to feel foolish.I sat down at the table where I'd done homework for eighteen years and didn't turn on any more lights than I had to. The dark felt easier to sit inside than the truth did.I thought about the anniversary trip first, because it was the easiest one to look at directly.Ash had booked it himself, six months out … the kind of gesture I used t

  • Three Nights To Ruin My Husband    Chapter 5: Packing a Bag

"Who is this?"I typed it out, then deleted it, then typed it again. The cursor blinked at me, patient and indifferent. Whoever it was knew things they shouldn't. Tonight wasn't the first time. That sentence had lodged itself behind my ribs and wouldn't stop pulsing.I sent the message. No reply came.I couldn't be here anymore. That much I knew, even if I understood almost nothing else about the wreckage of my night.I climbed the stairs again, slower, my bare feet silent. The bedroom door was still open. I walked past it without looking inside. The closet, at least, I could face. I pulled my suitcase down from the top shelf … the one we'd used for our honeymoon … and set it open on the bench where Ash had packed his own bag less than an hour before.I didn't think about what I was folding. My hands moved on their own … a sweater, jeans, the gray cardigan I kept for cold mornings, tossed in without any care. I wasn't packing for a trip. I was packing for an escape, and escapes don't

  • Three Nights To Ruin My Husband    Chapter 4: Six Years for Nothing

"You may kiss the bride."I could still hear the officiant's voice, six years later, standing in a hallway that no longer felt like mine, the dial tone from the voicemail still humming in my ears. It was easier to disappear into that day than to stand in the wreckage of tonight.I let myself go there. It had rained that morning, and my mother was convinced the ceremony would be ruined, but by two the sky had cleared. I remembered the small dressing room off the chapel, my sister pinning the last strands of my hair into place, both of us laughing at nothing."You look terrified," she'd said."I'm not terrified. I'm happy.""Those can look the same on you, you know."I hadn't believed her then. I believed her now, six years later, wondering how much of that happiness had actually been fear wearing a white dress.Ash had cried when I walked down the aisle. His jaw had tightened, tears slipping free before I'd even reached him. I had thought, in that moment, I would spend the rest of my l

  • Three Nights To Ruin My Husband    Chapter 3: No Apology

"You knew I'd be home late."Ash froze in the closet doorway, a duffel bag half-zipped in his hand, and didn't turn around right away. That told me everything, but I waited for him to say it anyway."What?""Don't. I heard her. 'You didn't tell me she'd be home early.' That's not something you say if today was an accident. That's something you say when you were counting on today being safe."He set the bag down slowly, and when he finally looked at me, his face had rearranged itself into something careful. Practiced, almost."It's not what it sounds like.""It sounds like you two picked today because you thought I'd be gone until seven. So either tell me I'm wrong, or tell me the truth. Those are the only options left."He didn't tell me I was wrong."Your assistant mentioned the Hendrickson meeting was running long," he said, like he was reading off a report. "I might have asked when you were expected home. It's not some elaborate plan, Elena. I just wanted the afternoon.""You wante

  • Three Nights To Ruin My Husband    Chapter 2: Mia's Name

"Elena."She said it first. Before Ash. The woman on my bed said my name like she'd been waiting for the chance, no question mark on it at all."How does she know my name?"The question came out of me flat, aimed at Ash, not at her. He was still buttoning his shirt, unhurried."Elena… ""Don't." I held up a hand, steadier than I expected. "Don't say my name like that. Like you're about to talk me down from something."He stopped buttoning. Something flickered across his face that almost looked like an apology trying to surface. Then it was gone, smoothed over the way he smoothed over everything … a bad quarterly report, a canceled reservation, a wife standing in the doorway of her own bedroom. The woman reached for a robe draped over my chair. The one I sat in every morning to put on my shoes."I'm Mia," she said, like the introduction was just a formality. Like the important part … knowing exactly who I was … she'd already taken care of.Just like that. As if we were meeting at one o
