Chapter 1

The cheerful laughter inside the house stopped the moment Mavis Keller saw me.

She let out a sharp scream and threw herself into Carter Ricci's arms.

"Eliza, I'm sorry! Please don't come any closer!"

Carter immediately stepped in front of her, shielding her from me. He soothed her in a soft, gentle voice I'd never heard him use before.

But when he turned toward me, his eyes flickered with disapproval. "Mavis is sick. She's only just started getting better, so don't you dare scare her again."

For three years, everyone had blamed me for driving Mavis to her death. They'd forced me to repent at her memorial every day, keeping me trapped in a suffocating cycle of guilt and self-loathing.

There had been times when I'd wanted to end my life just to escape the torment. Yet here she was, alive and well, laughing with my parents and my husband as they celebrated her birthday.

My father, Clement Keller, showed not the slightest trace of remorse.

Instead, he glared at me and shouted, "How dare you show your face here? Mavis has finally managed to pull herself out of the shadows. Are you trying to drive her to her death all over again?"

My mother, Susan Keller, rushed forward.

She grabbed my hands and pleaded bitterly, "Mavis fell into a deep depression three years ago because of what happened. We kept her alive a secret from you because we were afraid you'd lose control and do something reckless again.

"Eliza, please. After everything we've done for you, after adopting you from foster care and giving you a home, please just leave Mavis alone."

Their excuses were so absurd and twisted that I could barely believe what I was hearing.

"So, I've been the only obstacle standing in the way of your happy family reunion all along?" I pointed at myself, my voice trembling. "Then what was the point of everything you've put me through?"

"That's enough," Carter snapped. "Stop making a scene."

"You knew she was alive this whole time!" I shot back. "You helped them stage this entire thing just to deceive me?"

I reached for his hand.

He pulled away as though my touch disgusted him. Then, almost as quickly, his expression softened, and his voice took on a pleading note.

"I was the one who developed feelings for her first. This is all my fault. What I feel for her now is guilt. You're the one I truly love."

He claimed to love me, yet he remained firmly in front of Mavis, protecting her.

His hand moved gently over her back, every gesture betraying a familiarity that made my stomach turn. Overcome with nausea, I yanked my wedding ring off my finger and slammed it onto the floor.

Mavis flinched and shrank behind them, sobbing even harder.

"Eliza, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I shouldn't even be alive."

Susan hurried over and grabbed my arms.

"Eliza, we know you've been emotionally unstable since you got pregnant. We understand that you're having a hard time, but you can't keep hurting Mavis!"

Clement approached with a grim expression.

"If you provoke her one more time, don't blame me for throwing you out of this family."

Carter stepped away to retrieve a hotel key card, then came back to toss it at my feet.

"Go stay at a hotel for three days."

I stared at the card on the floor, feeling as though an invisible fist had closed around my heart.

"I'm your wife!" I screamed, my voice hoarse. "This is my home, and I'm carrying your child! Why am I the one who has to leave while the home-wrecker gets to stay?"

"Stop calling her that!" he roared. "If you're angry, take it out on me! Mavis is emotionally fragile and needs someone to look after her. Just go to the hotel, get some rest, and take care of the baby. Stop imagining things."

Susan wrapped Mavis in a protective embrace while Clement continued to glare at me with undisguised hostility. Together, they pushed me toward the front door as though I were an unwelcome stranger.

Once, Carter had promised me that this house would be our home, that our child would take his first steps here, and that I would always be the woman of the house.

"Fine," I said at last. "I'll make room for the three of you."

I bent down, picked up the key card, and closed my fingers around it before walking out into the cold. Behind me, Carter glanced at the wedding ring lying on the floor.

Something flickered across his face, but he quickly dismissed it, convinced I was simply putting on another dramatic display to make him feel guilty.

"Don't be scared," he murmured to Mavis.

His voice was soft and comforting, filled with a tenderness I'd once believed belonged only to me. "Eliza just needs a few days to get over this. She'll be fine."

I rested a hand on my slightly swollen belly as I stepped outside.

At last, I understood the truth. The man who had once loved me more than anything had been gone forever.

Henry arrived on the rooftop with the police, but he made no attempt to talk Carter down.Instead, he stood a short distance away and held up a digital recorder, saying, "Before Eliza died, she asked me to deliver one last message to you."He pressed play, and my weak, icy voice rang out against the roar of the flames in the background."Carter, if you dare to die, I swear I'll tear your soul apart piece by piece, even if I have to come back as a ghost. I want you to stay alive."I want you to live a long, full life and suffer through every waking moment, day after day, forever remembering that you burned me to death with your own hands."Carter stood on the edge of the rooftop. His hair whipped wildly in the howling wind, one foot hanging over the void. But the moment he heard my words, his entire body went rigid. With a cry of anguish, he dropped the knife, clutched his head in both hands, and let out a broken howl."You won't even let me die! Eliza, you're so cruel!"He crum

Carter lost his mind.In the middle of the night, he rushed to the cemetery where my ashes had been laid to rest.He dropped to his knees in front of my headstone and clawed at the frozen earth with his bare hands, desperately trying to dig up my urn and take it home.Freezing rain mixed with mud, soaking him to the skin. Before long, he developed a high fever and collapsed in the icy slush.Perhaps he still believed things would work out as they always had. Whenever he fell ill, no matter how badly we'd fought, I'd eventually soften and rush to his side to nurse him back to health.Lying in the mud, he murmured through his fever, "Eliza, it's so cold. Hold me... I was wrong. I'll never lock you up again. I'll never yell at you again. Please come back..."My ghost hovered above him as I watched him shiver in the freezing rain. I felt nothing but cold indifference as he lay there like an abandoned stray.Henry arrived under a black umbrella. He made no attempt to help Carter up,

Carter placed my urn and the charred remains of our fake marriage certificate in the middle of the master bedroom.Day and night, he talked to them as if I were still alive. He even ordered the housemaids to prepare my favorite dishes every day and set them on the dining table. If the food grew cold, he would fly into a rage, smashing every plate in sight and screaming that I would go hungry. As a ghost, I watched his descent into madness and found the whole spectacle laughable. One day, Henry arrived at the rebuilt house with my final medical records. He slammed a dusty, yellowed file onto the table in front of Carter.Inside was a truth I hadn't even known when I was alive.Susan and Clement had abandoned me at a foster care center simply because they preferred sons to daughters.Years later, when Mavis fell gravely ill and needed a steady supply of blood, they went to great lengths to track me down and bring me back. They presented me to the world as their adopted daughter,

The police investigation concluded quickly. The fire had started when scented candles in the living room ignited the curtains. The housekeeper had placed the candles there on Mavis's explicit instructions. More importantly, the police recovered a deleted text message from Mavis's phone, one she'd sent to Carter.[Make sure you keep Eliza locked up a little longer so she really learns her lesson. Oh, and I've lit a ton of candles around the house, so check for open flames before you leave!]The timestamp showed that she'd sent it just ten minutes before Carter left the villa.Mavis had known exactly how dangerous the candles were. She'd deliberately used her supposed emotional breakdown to lure Carter away, leaving me trapped inside the burning house. She'd intended for me to burn to death. The last trace of warmth vanished from Carter's eyes, replaced by a cold, bottomless hatred. He rushed straight back to the hospital, where Mavis was still lying in bed, putting on her fragile

When I opened my eyes again, my ghost was hovering in the sterile, pale hallway of a hospital.I watched Carter stay by Mavis's side. She leaned against his chest, her pale face wearing a peaceful smile of relief.Neither of them knew that, during those same two hours, I had been trapped in a raging fire, kneeling on the scorching floor and coughing up blood as I called Carter again and again, desperately begging him to save me.Only after she had calmed down did he finally leave the hospital. On his drive home, his expression darkened. He wasn't worried that something might have happened to me. Instead, he was thinking about how to punish me for what he considered another irrational tantrum. He had already decided to lock me up for at least three days and refuse to let me out until I agreed to sign the adoption agreement. But the moment he turned onto our street, he saw thick plumes of smoke rising into the night sky. Bright orange flames lit up the darkness, casting a crimson

When I opened my eyes again, I wasn't looking at a sterile hospital ceiling.Instead, the familiar, warm glow of the bedside sconce illuminated the master bedroom. Carter was slumped beside the bed, exhaustion etched across his face as he held my hand tightly. For a fleeting moment, I felt transported back to the early days of our relationship.Back then, even when I had suffered nothing more than menstrual cramps, he had stayed by my bedside all night to look after me. The next morning, he'd held my hand just like this, his eyes bloodshot."Eliza, you scared me so much."Seeing him beside me now, I couldn't help letting a small, pathetic flicker of hope take hold.Perhaps some part of him still cared.I moved my fingers slightly, and he woke up at once."You're awake," he muttered, rubbing his eyes."Did you bring me back from the hospital?" I asked, my nose stinging."Yeah."That single word nearly brought me to tears.Maybe he'd finally realized how serious my condition
