Chapter 2

Author: Cherry Blossom
I stayed at the hotel for seven days.

Carter didn't call me once. The only message I received came from Susan.

[Come back and apologize to Mavis when you've calmed down.]

I stared at the message for a long time.

Before I could even decide how to respond, Henry Odom, my former high school senior and current attending doctor, slid a medical report across the desk toward me.

"Years of excessive blood donations have severely damaged your bone marrow's ability to produce blood cells," he said gravely.

"You can't continue this pregnancy. We need to terminate it as soon as possible and begin treatment. Even then, your chances of survival are only about ten percent."

I stared at him in disbelief.

Ever since I turned 16, my parents had forced me to donate blood to Mavis every few months. She suffered from hemolytic anemia, and we both had an extremely rare Rh-negative blood type.

Henry gripped my medical chart, his expression growing more serious.

"Your condition is extremely dangerous. Any blood loss, infection, or even severe emotional stress could trigger a hemorrhage. If that happens, we could lose both you and the baby."

I instinctively cupped my lower abdomen. I took out my phone and hesitated, wondering whether I should tell Carter about this.

Just then, a trending news alert appeared on my screen.

The title read: [Ricci Group CEO Spoils His Wife with a Fairytale Birthday Celebration!]

In the video, Carter stood beneath dazzling lights, lowering a birthday crown onto Mavis's head. She held a bunch of balloons and smiled radiantly up at him.

The gaze they shared was filled with unmistakable tenderness.

Once, when I'd had nothing more than a stomachache, he had canceled an important business deal just to stay by my side all night.

"Eliza, I want to be right there beside you to welcome every child we have," he'd promised me.

Now, he'd even forgotten his promise to accompany me to my prenatal checkup.

...

When I returned home and opened the door to the room beside our master bedroom, I was stunned by the scene inside.

The crib had been smashed to pieces. The little wooden rocking horse I'd spent an entire month carving and polishing by hand lay broken among the wreckage.

Carter stood in the middle of the mess, speaking as though he were explaining something perfectly reasonable. "When Mavis jumped from the balcony because of you, her uterus was damaged.

"The doctors said she'd probably never be able to get pregnant. Seeing a nursery would trigger her trauma, so I had no choice but to tear it down."

I glared at him. "And what happens now? Is she planning to move in and play lady of the house?"

Carter frowned, then reached out to pull me into his chest and patted my head just like he used to.

"There you go, speaking out of anger again. Once Mavis gets better, we'll design a princess nursery for our baby together, okay?"

To my shame, that brief touch of tenderness made my eyes sting.

"Carter," I whispered, clutching the hem of his shirt. "The doctor said... I might not be able to keep this baby."

He stiffened and immediately let go of me.

"So you heard?"

"Heard what?"

"Susan suggested that after the baby is born, we should legally let Mavis raise the child as her own. Now you're using the baby to threaten me, aren't you?"

My mind went blank. "Let Mavis raise my baby as her own?"

Carter avoided my gaze. "Mavis can't have children. This is what we owe her. The baby will still be yours. You'll be able to see him, and you'll still be Mrs. Ricci. The only difference is that he'll call Mavis Mom."

I clutched my belly, the pain in my chest making it difficult to breathe.

"This is my child! Why on earth should he call her his mother?"

"She's not some stranger! She's your sister!"

"And this is my flesh and blood, not some token of compensation you can hand over to her!"

"Don't make this sound so ugly."

I burst into laughter, tears streaming down my face.

"If you love her so much, why don't you have a baby with her yourself?"

"She can't get pregnant!"

"That's her problem!"

"She ended up like this because of you!"

The living room fell silent.

At that moment, ten years of my devotion shattered beyond repair.

I didn't argue anymore.

I simply turned and went back to the bedroom. From the bottom of my trunk, I pulled out our marriage certificate, the document I'd cherished for ten years.

I opened the county's online registry portal and tried to file for divorce. But instead of a record of our marriage, three words appeared on the screen.

[No Record Found.]

The blood seemed to freeze in my veins.

I refreshed the page again and again, but the result never changed.

I'd cooked his meals, kept his home, and carried his child. Yet according to the law, I was nothing more than a stranger.

Clutching the fake marriage certificate, I rushed out of the bedroom.

But a sudden, agonizing cramp seized my lower abdomen, forcing me to stop.

"The documents are right here." Carter looked at me impatiently. "How could they be fake? Must you act so hysterical? Are you really trying to get rid of this baby?"

The pain was so intense that I could barely stand.

Through the haze, I looked past him and saw Mavis hiding behind his back. At last, I woke up from the illusion I'd clung to for so long.

I stroked my aching belly and silently spoke to the child inside me.

"Baby, there is no place for us in this house. But even if it costs me my life, I'll never let you call a homewrecker Mom."

Henry arrived on the rooftop with the police, but he made no attempt to talk Carter down.Instead, he stood a short distance away and held up a digital recorder, saying, "Before Eliza died, she asked me to deliver one last message to you."He pressed play, and my weak, icy voice rang out against the roar of the flames in the background."Carter, if you dare to die, I swear I'll tear your soul apart piece by piece, even if I have to come back as a ghost. I want you to stay alive."I want you to live a long, full life and suffer through every waking moment, day after day, forever remembering that you burned me to death with your own hands."Carter stood on the edge of the rooftop. His hair whipped wildly in the howling wind, one foot hanging over the void. But the moment he heard my words, his entire body went rigid. With a cry of anguish, he dropped the knife, clutched his head in both hands, and let out a broken howl."You won't even let me die! Eliza, you're so cruel!"He crum

Carter lost his mind.In the middle of the night, he rushed to the cemetery where my ashes had been laid to rest.He dropped to his knees in front of my headstone and clawed at the frozen earth with his bare hands, desperately trying to dig up my urn and take it home.Freezing rain mixed with mud, soaking him to the skin. Before long, he developed a high fever and collapsed in the icy slush.Perhaps he still believed things would work out as they always had. Whenever he fell ill, no matter how badly we'd fought, I'd eventually soften and rush to his side to nurse him back to health.Lying in the mud, he murmured through his fever, "Eliza, it's so cold. Hold me... I was wrong. I'll never lock you up again. I'll never yell at you again. Please come back..."My ghost hovered above him as I watched him shiver in the freezing rain. I felt nothing but cold indifference as he lay there like an abandoned stray.Henry arrived under a black umbrella. He made no attempt to help Carter up,

Carter placed my urn and the charred remains of our fake marriage certificate in the middle of the master bedroom.Day and night, he talked to them as if I were still alive. He even ordered the housemaids to prepare my favorite dishes every day and set them on the dining table. If the food grew cold, he would fly into a rage, smashing every plate in sight and screaming that I would go hungry. As a ghost, I watched his descent into madness and found the whole spectacle laughable. One day, Henry arrived at the rebuilt house with my final medical records. He slammed a dusty, yellowed file onto the table in front of Carter.Inside was a truth I hadn't even known when I was alive.Susan and Clement had abandoned me at a foster care center simply because they preferred sons to daughters.Years later, when Mavis fell gravely ill and needed a steady supply of blood, they went to great lengths to track me down and bring me back. They presented me to the world as their adopted daughter,

The police investigation concluded quickly. The fire had started when scented candles in the living room ignited the curtains. The housekeeper had placed the candles there on Mavis's explicit instructions. More importantly, the police recovered a deleted text message from Mavis's phone, one she'd sent to Carter.[Make sure you keep Eliza locked up a little longer so she really learns her lesson. Oh, and I've lit a ton of candles around the house, so check for open flames before you leave!]The timestamp showed that she'd sent it just ten minutes before Carter left the villa.Mavis had known exactly how dangerous the candles were. She'd deliberately used her supposed emotional breakdown to lure Carter away, leaving me trapped inside the burning house. She'd intended for me to burn to death. The last trace of warmth vanished from Carter's eyes, replaced by a cold, bottomless hatred. He rushed straight back to the hospital, where Mavis was still lying in bed, putting on her fragile

  • Three Years of Guilt, Built on a Lie   Chapter 5

When I opened my eyes again, my ghost was hovering in the sterile, pale hallway of a hospital.I watched Carter stay by Mavis's side. She leaned against his chest, her pale face wearing a peaceful smile of relief.Neither of them knew that, during those same two hours, I had been trapped in a raging fire, kneeling on the scorching floor and coughing up blood as I called Carter again and again, desperately begging him to save me.Only after she had calmed down did he finally leave the hospital. On his drive home, his expression darkened. He wasn't worried that something might have happened to me. Instead, he was thinking about how to punish me for what he considered another irrational tantrum. He had already decided to lock me up for at least three days and refuse to let me out until I agreed to sign the adoption agreement. But the moment he turned onto our street, he saw thick plumes of smoke rising into the night sky. Bright orange flames lit up the darkness, casting a crimson

  • Three Years of Guilt, Built on a Lie   Chapter 4

When I opened my eyes again, I wasn't looking at a sterile hospital ceiling.Instead, the familiar, warm glow of the bedside sconce illuminated the master bedroom. Carter was slumped beside the bed, exhaustion etched across his face as he held my hand tightly. For a fleeting moment, I felt transported back to the early days of our relationship.Back then, even when I had suffered nothing more than menstrual cramps, he had stayed by my bedside all night to look after me. The next morning, he'd held my hand just like this, his eyes bloodshot."Eliza, you scared me so much."Seeing him beside me now, I couldn't help letting a small, pathetic flicker of hope take hold.Perhaps some part of him still cared.I moved my fingers slightly, and he woke up at once."You're awake," he muttered, rubbing his eyes."Did you bring me back from the hospital?" I asked, my nose stinging."Yeah."That single word nearly brought me to tears.Maybe he'd finally realized how serious my condition
