Chapter 3

Author: Cherry Blossom
The next morning, I pushed open my bedroom door and froze.

Mavis was wearing my pajamas and slippers, sitting comfortably at my vanity as she browsed through my jewelry. She looked perfectly at home, as if the place belonged to her.

Susan had personally decorated Mavis's room, while Clement had even taken down the painting I'd treasured for years and replaced it with a portrait of her.

"Mavis, this is my house," I said through gritted teeth.

She turned to me with a sweet smile. "Carter said this is my home, too. You don't mind, do you?"

She opened the jewelry box and took out a vintage bracelet. It was the only keepsake my biological mother had left me.

"I need something to wear for tonight's gala. Do you mind if I borrow this?"

"Put it down!"

I rushed forward to snatch it from her, but she quickly stepped aside. My foot slipped, and I crashed to the floor.

A sharp, tearing pain shot through my lower abdomen. I curled up, cold sweat soaking my back as I struggled to breathe through the agony.

By the time it was time to leave for the gala, my face was deathly pale, and I could barely stand.

"Carter, I'm not feeling well. Can I stay home and rest tonight?"

Before I could finish, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of bed.

"You're the hostess. What will people think if you don't show up?"

At the gala, Carter kept Mavis on his arm the entire evening. The two of them stood side by side, accepting congratulations as though they were a real couple.

Everyone praised Mavis for finally stepping out of the shadows, calling it a miracle. Meanwhile, I huddled alone in a dark corner, shivering as I held a hand over my aching abdomen.

Mavis approached me, wearing my mother's bracelet. As she passed a waiter, she suddenly veered sideways and bumped into his tray.

The next moment, a large bowl of scalding broth spilled all over me. Searing pain engulfed my legs and abdomen. I screamed and collapsed to the floor, black spots dancing before my eyes.

Mavis let out a sharp gasp and stumbled backward. Her wrist, with the bracelet still on it, struck the sharp edge of a table.

A crisp snap cut through the air. My heart lurched as the bracelet broke into several pieces and scattered across the floor.

Tears immediately filled Mavis's eyes.

"Eliza, even if you hate me, you didn't have to push me on purpose. Carter gave me this bracelet. I couldn't even bear to take it off!"

Carter rushed over and pulled her into his arms.

"That's not true!" I screamed through the pain. "That bracelet was the only thing my mother ever left me!"

For a fleeting moment, I saw a trace of distress in Carter's eyes. But the instant Mavis whimpered, he scooped her into his arms without a second thought.

"Mavis can't handle any more stress right now," he said. "I have to take care of her first. Find a medic and get some ointment for yourself."

I looked down at the blood spreading beneath the hem of my dress and suddenly burst out laughing, tears streaming down my face.

Carter didn't stop or look back once.

With trembling hands, I pulled out my phone and called Henry.

"Please... save my baby..."

The phone slipped from my fingers.

Blood mingled with the broth, soaking through my dress and spreading into a bright red pool beneath me.

Henry arrived on the rooftop with the police, but he made no attempt to talk Carter down.Instead, he stood a short distance away and held up a digital recorder, saying, "Before Eliza died, she asked me to deliver one last message to you."He pressed play, and my weak, icy voice rang out against the roar of the flames in the background."Carter, if you dare to die, I swear I'll tear your soul apart piece by piece, even if I have to come back as a ghost. I want you to stay alive."I want you to live a long, full life and suffer through every waking moment, day after day, forever remembering that you burned me to death with your own hands."Carter stood on the edge of the rooftop. His hair whipped wildly in the howling wind, one foot hanging over the void. But the moment he heard my words, his entire body went rigid. With a cry of anguish, he dropped the knife, clutched his head in both hands, and let out a broken howl."You won't even let me die! Eliza, you're so cruel!"He crum

Carter lost his mind.In the middle of the night, he rushed to the cemetery where my ashes had been laid to rest.He dropped to his knees in front of my headstone and clawed at the frozen earth with his bare hands, desperately trying to dig up my urn and take it home.Freezing rain mixed with mud, soaking him to the skin. Before long, he developed a high fever and collapsed in the icy slush.Perhaps he still believed things would work out as they always had. Whenever he fell ill, no matter how badly we'd fought, I'd eventually soften and rush to his side to nurse him back to health.Lying in the mud, he murmured through his fever, "Eliza, it's so cold. Hold me... I was wrong. I'll never lock you up again. I'll never yell at you again. Please come back..."My ghost hovered above him as I watched him shiver in the freezing rain. I felt nothing but cold indifference as he lay there like an abandoned stray.Henry arrived under a black umbrella. He made no attempt to help Carter up,

Carter placed my urn and the charred remains of our fake marriage certificate in the middle of the master bedroom.Day and night, he talked to them as if I were still alive. He even ordered the housemaids to prepare my favorite dishes every day and set them on the dining table. If the food grew cold, he would fly into a rage, smashing every plate in sight and screaming that I would go hungry. As a ghost, I watched his descent into madness and found the whole spectacle laughable. One day, Henry arrived at the rebuilt house with my final medical records. He slammed a dusty, yellowed file onto the table in front of Carter.Inside was a truth I hadn't even known when I was alive.Susan and Clement had abandoned me at a foster care center simply because they preferred sons to daughters.Years later, when Mavis fell gravely ill and needed a steady supply of blood, they went to great lengths to track me down and bring me back. They presented me to the world as their adopted daughter,

The police investigation concluded quickly. The fire had started when scented candles in the living room ignited the curtains. The housekeeper had placed the candles there on Mavis's explicit instructions. More importantly, the police recovered a deleted text message from Mavis's phone, one she'd sent to Carter.[Make sure you keep Eliza locked up a little longer so she really learns her lesson. Oh, and I've lit a ton of candles around the house, so check for open flames before you leave!]The timestamp showed that she'd sent it just ten minutes before Carter left the villa.Mavis had known exactly how dangerous the candles were. She'd deliberately used her supposed emotional breakdown to lure Carter away, leaving me trapped inside the burning house. She'd intended for me to burn to death. The last trace of warmth vanished from Carter's eyes, replaced by a cold, bottomless hatred. He rushed straight back to the hospital, where Mavis was still lying in bed, putting on her fragile

When I opened my eyes again, my ghost was hovering in the sterile, pale hallway of a hospital.I watched Carter stay by Mavis's side. She leaned against his chest, her pale face wearing a peaceful smile of relief.Neither of them knew that, during those same two hours, I had been trapped in a raging fire, kneeling on the scorching floor and coughing up blood as I called Carter again and again, desperately begging him to save me.Only after she had calmed down did he finally leave the hospital. On his drive home, his expression darkened. He wasn't worried that something might have happened to me. Instead, he was thinking about how to punish me for what he considered another irrational tantrum. He had already decided to lock me up for at least three days and refuse to let me out until I agreed to sign the adoption agreement. But the moment he turned onto our street, he saw thick plumes of smoke rising into the night sky. Bright orange flames lit up the darkness, casting a crimson

When I opened my eyes again, I wasn't looking at a sterile hospital ceiling.Instead, the familiar, warm glow of the bedside sconce illuminated the master bedroom. Carter was slumped beside the bed, exhaustion etched across his face as he held my hand tightly. For a fleeting moment, I felt transported back to the early days of our relationship.Back then, even when I had suffered nothing more than menstrual cramps, he had stayed by my bedside all night to look after me. The next morning, he'd held my hand just like this, his eyes bloodshot."Eliza, you scared me so much."Seeing him beside me now, I couldn't help letting a small, pathetic flicker of hope take hold.Perhaps some part of him still cared.I moved my fingers slightly, and he woke up at once."You're awake," he muttered, rubbing his eyes."Did you bring me back from the hospital?" I asked, my nose stinging."Yeah."That single word nearly brought me to tears.Maybe he'd finally realized how serious my condition
