I got up at five, my eyes still red, planning to use one of the orchestra's rehearsal rooms.

The doorbell rang. Sienna's breakfast order had arrived.

Iced coffee, crepes, and a big box of durian crepe cake.

The cloying smell spread through the room, and my throat started itching right away.

"Get the durian out of here!"

I covered my nose and mouth and backed up to the window.

Sienna came out of the guest room looking completely innocent. "I forgot you're allergic to durian. Ethan loves it. I just wanted to surprise him."

The noise woke Ethan. He took the cake from her, put it in the fridge, and said to me, "She meant well. Take an allergy pill and tough it out."

I stared at him in disbelief. "You know how bad my allergy is. Even the smell makes me sick."

He frowned, already looking impatient. "That's why I told you to take a pill, not start a fight."

His words cut deep.

I didn't argue anymore. I swallowed a pill and went to get my violin.

But the stand was empty.

I rushed out to the balcony. The violin my mother had left me was lying by the window, soaking wet.

The top had warped from the damp. Two strings had snapped, and the cleaning spray had eaten big white patches into the old varnish.

I dropped to my knees and picked it up. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely close the case.

"Who touched it?"

Sienna ducked behind Ethan. "I just wanted to clean it for you. The bottle says it's for wood care."

I held up the bottle and pointed to the bold warning on the back, so angry my voice shook. "It says [Do not use on musical instruments]. Can't you read?"

Ethan shielded her. "She never studied music. Of course she didn't know. I'll just buy you a new one."

The tears came without warning. I wiped them away roughly with the back of my hand. "My mom left me this. Before she died, she used it to teach me one last piece. How are you going to replace that?"

"There's no violin out there that money can't buy."

Right in front of me, he called a violin shop and gave them an enormous budget.

With tears in her eyes, Sienna explained, "I heard you say the audition was important, so I wanted to get it ready for you. I really never thought this would happen."

I looked at the traces of cleaning spray still on her fingertips, and slowly, I calmed down.

The violin had been locked in its case. She would have had to take it out, remove the moisture-control plug, find the cleaning spray, and then open the window on a rainy night.

"It's not that you didn't know," I said hoarsely. "You did it on purpose. You wanted to keep me off that stage."

Sienna burst into tears. "Ethan, why does she always think the worst of me?"

"That's enough!" Ethan put his arm around her. "It's just an internal audition. There'll be another one. Don't go pinning this on her."

I headed out holding the damaged violin, but he grabbed my arm.

"If you go up there with an unfamiliar violin, you'll be a laughingstock in front of your colleagues. I'll explain things to the conductor for you."

I shook him off. "You don't get to decide what I do at work."

An hour later, I'd borrowed a spare violin and rushed backstage.

But the administrator handed me a notice. "Your husband just called and said you weren't feeling well and were dropping out. We couldn't reach you to confirm, and we were running out of time, so your spot went to the next person."

I froze. My fingers went ice-cold. "I never told him to call you!"

I dug my phone out of my bag. At some point, someone had blocked the orchestra administrator's number. That was why the calls never came through.

The only person who knew my phone's passcode was Ethan.

Shaking all over, I called him.

When he picked up, I could hear Sienna laughing in the background, telling him to try the durian crepe cake.

I fought to keep my breathing steady. "Why did you touch my phone? Why did you throw away my chance?"

"If you insist on going up there with someone else's violin, Sienna will see it and feel guilty and hurt. Besides, you're in no shape to perform right now. I did it for your own good."

"Ethan." I held the borrowed violin tight. Tears welled in my eyes, but they didn't fall. "You didn't just ruin an audition."

He only said flatly, "Stop making a scene. Come home tonight and I'll help you pick out a new violin."

After he hung up, I stood in the empty backstage hallway for a long time.

Then I dried my eyes and emailed the divorce papers to my lawyer friend, Jordan.

This time, I didn't wait for him to explain.

After the last stop on the tour, Ethan asked me to dinner. It was the restaurant where we'd had our first date.At the table for two by the window, there was no wagyu for Sienna and no durian dessert that would trigger my allergy. There was only pan-seared salmon, mushrooms, and a green salad.Ethan mixed a small dish of sauce and set it in front of me."I think this is how you like it."He'd gotten every step right, but I didn't pick up my fork."When did you learn that?""After you left."Ethan looked at the little dish and gave a rueful smile."Whenever you sat across from me, all I cared about was cutting Sienna's steak."I didn't realize how often I'd ignored you until you left."Four years earlier, we'd come here for our first date as a married couple.Back then, he'd cut the first piece of fish for me and put it on my plate, promising he'd never let me eat alone. The promise was real.So was the forgetting.Ethan took out a small box. Inside were our wedding rings."After the di

The day the divorce was finalized, Sienna came to Helsinki. She was waiting for me at a café near the rehearsal hall, the gold cooler box on the table."Ethan deleted all my contact information."She'd cut her hair short, and her makeup wasn't flawless anymore."After I missed out on the promotion, they moved me to a regular staff position. All the friends who used to flock around me are gone, too."I didn't sit down. I just looked at her. "What does that have to do with me?"Sienna was quiet for a moment, then opened the box.The photo inside had been torn to pieces, and the membership card had been cut in half."I just want to know. Do you really not love him at all anymore?""That's none of your business.""He waits for you every day," Sienna said, her voice shaking. "He's hated the cold since he was a kid, and now he'll stand outside for hours just to catch a glimpse of you."I met her eyes. "If you feel sorry for him, that has nothing to do with me either."Her tears fell on the t

Ethan started digging into everything that had happened over the past three years. He remembered the diamond bracelet on Sienna's wrist. It had never been a gift for a client. That day, Sienna had said she'd been passed over for a promotion and was feeling down, so on a whim he'd given her the bracelet. He'd long since forgotten who he'd originally bought it for.Only when he found the purchase record did he see the note on the order."Third anniversary. For Nora."He pulled up his car's trip log from our anniversary last year. The "emergency" at work had lasted all of 40 minutes. He'd spent the rest of the night with Sienna, eating dessert, shopping for groceries, and posing for a couples membership photo. In the photo, Sienna was beaming. She'd asked him then, "Won't Nora be sad, home all by herself?"He'd said, "She's very understanding."He'd used that one word, understanding, to excuse so many of the ways he'd let me down.Ethan canceled the membership card and tossed the gold coo

Ethan locked the papers in a drawer, thinking I'd be back in a few days. Before, whenever we fought, I'd stay at a hotel for one night at most. The next day, he'd send flowers or jewelry, and I'd give us both a way to save face. This time, out of habit, he ordered flowers again. But the delivery driver called to say no one was home to sign for them. When Ethan got home, he found half the closet empty. In the music room, my sheet music, my metronome, and my award certificates were all gone.Where our wedding photo used to hang, there was only a pale square on the wall. There was a note stuck to the fridge door."Please give the divorce papers to my lawyer. Do whatever you want with everything else."He clutched the note until his knuckles slowly turned white. When Sienna came in carrying groceries, he was clearing the dining table."Ethan, when's Nora coming back? I bought the things she likes—""What does she like?"Ethan looked up, and his voice was so cold it stopped her in her track

The day before I left, I came home after finishing the residency paperwork and found a public apology waiting on the dining table. It claimed that I had invited Sienna to take part in an interactive segment of the charity concert. Her behavior had been a planned performance. The secretly recorded footage had been taken out of context and should not be held against her.At the bottom were two signature lines: one for me and one for the orchestra manager to sign on behalf of the organization.Ethan was on the sofa with Sienna snuggled up beside him."Sign it."He pushed a pen toward me, his tone leaving no room for argument."Tomorrow, have the orchestra manager sign off on it to confirm that what happened that night was part of the show."I glanced at the signature line. "I won't lie for her."Sienna's eyes were red as she explained. "I'm up for brand manager next month. If my company finds out I got drunk and made a scene at a concert hall, they'll think I'm unreliable."I turned to Et

When the new violin arrived, Sienna was in the kitchen wearing my pajamas and mixing Ethan an electrolyte drink for his hangover. They'd been at a class reunion the night before and hadn't come home until early morning.I'd spent the whole night on standby with the orchestra. No one had asked where I was.The man from the violin shop opened the case. The new violin had cost a fortune. My name was engraved on the neck.I glanced at it and said calmly, "Send it back."Sienna came over with the glass. "Ethan spent all afternoon picking it out. Don't throw his thoughtfulness back in his face."My voice was cold. "Stay out of my business."Her hand jerked, the glass hit the floor, and water splashed over her feet.Ethan rushed over to steady her.Sienna said through tears, "I was only trying to talk Nora into accepting it."Ethan rounded on me. "Do you have to make everyone miserable?"I looked at the pajamas she was wearing. "Those are mine."Sienna clutched at the collar. "I drank too muc
