When the new violin arrived, Sienna was in the kitchen wearing my pajamas and mixing Ethan an electrolyte drink for his hangover.

They'd been at a class reunion the night before and hadn't come home until early morning.

I'd spent the whole night on standby with the orchestra. No one had asked where I was.

The man from the violin shop opened the case.

The new violin had cost a fortune. My name was engraved on the neck.

I glanced at it and said calmly, "Send it back."

Sienna came over with the glass. "Ethan spent all afternoon picking it out. Don't throw his thoughtfulness back in his face."

My voice was cold. "Stay out of my business."

Her hand jerked, the glass hit the floor, and water splashed over her feet.

Ethan rushed over to steady her.

Sienna said through tears, "I was only trying to talk Nora into accepting it."

Ethan rounded on me. "Do you have to make everyone miserable?"

I looked at the pajamas she was wearing. "Those are mine."

Sienna clutched at the collar. "I drank too much last night. Ethan just grabbed them from the closet."

It still hurt, but I didn't lose control the way I used to.

I went into the bedroom, bagged up the pajamas she'd worn, the towels she'd used, and the slippers, then threw it all out the door.

Ethan was livid. "You're getting more unreasonable by the day."

I met his eyes. "Then both of you can stay away from me."

After I shut the door, I got an email from a Nordic youth chamber orchestra.

Six months ago, one of my mother's former students had recommended me for their one-year residency.

I'd turned it down because I couldn't stand to leave Ethan.

Now a spot had opened up, and they wanted to know if I could be in Helsinki within five days.

I replied with one word. "Yes."

That afternoon, I managed to land a spot in a charity concert.

As I was leaving, Ethan handed me my coat. His voice was unusually gentle. "It's getting cold tonight. Let me know when the show's over, and I'll come pick you up."

I didn't take it, but I did pause for a second.

On a rainy night three years ago, he'd draped his coat over my violin case and gotten soaked all the way home.

The memory rushed back, and my eyes burned. Then I gripped the handle of my case and left without looking back.

Ten minutes before the show, a staff member came to find me and said, "Your husband says it's an emergency. He wants you in the parking lot."

I hurried downstairs and found Ethan standing beside his car.

It turned out Sienna had just come from a brand's cocktail party nearby. She'd demanded that the staff take down a display for a sponsor's competitor, and when they refused, she threw a fit.

Someone had caught it on video. She was up for a brand manager position next month, and if the footage got back to her company, it wasn't hard to guess what would happen.

"Go explain it to the organizers. Tell them you invited Sienna and what happened was just part of the show."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "She got drunk and made a scene. Why should I lie for her?"

Sienna hid behind him, eyes red. "If that video gets back to my company, I'm done."

"Then that's on you."

Ethan's expression hardened. "Nora, it's only a charity show. Explain it to the press. Someone else can take your place onstage, and nobody will lose anything."

The stage manager was already calling for me to get ready.

I clutched my case. "Get out of my way."

Instead, he snatched my badge and told the organizers that I was too upset to go on.

By the time I got to the stage door, my replacement was already out there.

Afterward, the video of Sienna was buried online, and the orchestra suspended me from every performance for the rest of the quarter.

Ethan sighed with relief. "Good thing that blew over."

I looked at him and suddenly laughed, even as tears slid down my face.

"Right. She's fine," I said, slowly and clearly. "I've been pulled from every performance, but that doesn't matter."

This time, when he reached for me, I turned away.

After the last stop on the tour, Ethan asked me to dinner. It was the restaurant where we'd had our first date.At the table for two by the window, there was no wagyu for Sienna and no durian dessert that would trigger my allergy. There was only pan-seared salmon, mushrooms, and a green salad.Ethan mixed a small dish of sauce and set it in front of me."I think this is how you like it."He'd gotten every step right, but I didn't pick up my fork."When did you learn that?""After you left."Ethan looked at the little dish and gave a rueful smile."Whenever you sat across from me, all I cared about was cutting Sienna's steak."I didn't realize how often I'd ignored you until you left."Four years earlier, we'd come here for our first date as a married couple.Back then, he'd cut the first piece of fish for me and put it on my plate, promising he'd never let me eat alone. The promise was real.So was the forgetting.Ethan took out a small box. Inside were our wedding rings."After the di

The day the divorce was finalized, Sienna came to Helsinki. She was waiting for me at a café near the rehearsal hall, the gold cooler box on the table."Ethan deleted all my contact information."She'd cut her hair short, and her makeup wasn't flawless anymore."After I missed out on the promotion, they moved me to a regular staff position. All the friends who used to flock around me are gone, too."I didn't sit down. I just looked at her. "What does that have to do with me?"Sienna was quiet for a moment, then opened the box.The photo inside had been torn to pieces, and the membership card had been cut in half."I just want to know. Do you really not love him at all anymore?""That's none of your business.""He waits for you every day," Sienna said, her voice shaking. "He's hated the cold since he was a kid, and now he'll stand outside for hours just to catch a glimpse of you."I met her eyes. "If you feel sorry for him, that has nothing to do with me either."Her tears fell on the t

Ethan started digging into everything that had happened over the past three years. He remembered the diamond bracelet on Sienna's wrist. It had never been a gift for a client. That day, Sienna had said she'd been passed over for a promotion and was feeling down, so on a whim he'd given her the bracelet. He'd long since forgotten who he'd originally bought it for.Only when he found the purchase record did he see the note on the order."Third anniversary. For Nora."He pulled up his car's trip log from our anniversary last year. The "emergency" at work had lasted all of 40 minutes. He'd spent the rest of the night with Sienna, eating dessert, shopping for groceries, and posing for a couples membership photo. In the photo, Sienna was beaming. She'd asked him then, "Won't Nora be sad, home all by herself?"He'd said, "She's very understanding."He'd used that one word, understanding, to excuse so many of the ways he'd let me down.Ethan canceled the membership card and tossed the gold coo

Ethan locked the papers in a drawer, thinking I'd be back in a few days. Before, whenever we fought, I'd stay at a hotel for one night at most. The next day, he'd send flowers or jewelry, and I'd give us both a way to save face. This time, out of habit, he ordered flowers again. But the delivery driver called to say no one was home to sign for them. When Ethan got home, he found half the closet empty. In the music room, my sheet music, my metronome, and my award certificates were all gone.Where our wedding photo used to hang, there was only a pale square on the wall. There was a note stuck to the fridge door."Please give the divorce papers to my lawyer. Do whatever you want with everything else."He clutched the note until his knuckles slowly turned white. When Sienna came in carrying groceries, he was clearing the dining table."Ethan, when's Nora coming back? I bought the things she likes—""What does she like?"Ethan looked up, and his voice was so cold it stopped her in her track

The day before I left, I came home after finishing the residency paperwork and found a public apology waiting on the dining table. It claimed that I had invited Sienna to take part in an interactive segment of the charity concert. Her behavior had been a planned performance. The secretly recorded footage had been taken out of context and should not be held against her.At the bottom were two signature lines: one for me and one for the orchestra manager to sign on behalf of the organization.Ethan was on the sofa with Sienna snuggled up beside him."Sign it."He pushed a pen toward me, his tone leaving no room for argument."Tomorrow, have the orchestra manager sign off on it to confirm that what happened that night was part of the show."I glanced at the signature line. "I won't lie for her."Sienna's eyes were red as she explained. "I'm up for brand manager next month. If my company finds out I got drunk and made a scene at a concert hall, they'll think I'm unreliable."I turned to Et
