The day before I left, I came home after finishing the residency paperwork and found a public apology waiting on the dining table.

It claimed that I had invited Sienna to take part in an interactive segment of the charity concert.

Her behavior had been a planned performance. The secretly recorded footage had been taken out of context and should not be held against her.

At the bottom were two signature lines: one for me and one for the orchestra manager to sign on behalf of the organization.

Ethan was on the sofa with Sienna snuggled up beside him.

"Sign it."

He pushed a pen toward me, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"Tomorrow, have the orchestra manager sign off on it to confirm that what happened that night was part of the show."

I glanced at the signature line. "I won't lie for her."

Sienna's eyes were red as she explained. "I'm up for brand manager next month. If my company finds out I got drunk and made a scene at a concert hall, they'll think I'm unreliable."

I turned to Ethan. "So her career counts, and mine doesn't?"

Ethan frowned. "The orchestra's already suspended you. Going after Sienna won't do you any good. Besides, it was only one chance to perform. You didn't really lose anything."

I'd played the violin for 20 years and worked my way up from the back row to assistant concertmaster.

With one careless sentence, he erased all my hard work.

"I won't sign it."

I raised my head. My voice had never been steadier.

Ethan picked up his phone. "Then I'll have to pull the venue sponsorship for your mother's memorial concert."

The blood drained from my face.

The memorial concert was tonight.

The programs had been printed, and the audience was already there.

"Ethan, my mother was good to you when she was alive. Don't you remember any of that?"

He hesitated, then pushed the pen toward me anyway. "Of course I remember. So as long as you sign, the concert goes on as planned."

My phone kept lighting up.

The venue had suddenly cut the power, and the audience was being kept out in the lobby.

The venue manager said the last sponsorship payment hadn't come through, so they couldn't open the doors.

I turned to the last page of the statement and found one more line. It read, "I admit that out of jealousy, I verbally attacked Sienna on multiple occasions, and I offer this public apology of my own free will."

I took a deep breath and tore the statement in half.

Sienna jumped to her feet. "You don't even care about your mom's memorial concert anymore?"

"My mother didn't teach me the violin so I could beg on my knees for a place onstage."

The venue sent a notice. "Sponsorship canceled. The hall will be closed tonight."

The group chat erupted.

Some people were looking for a new venue. Others were trying to calm the audience.

No one reached out to me. They all thought I'd backed out at the last minute.

"You can always do the concert next year," Sienna said.

I looked up and stared her down. "Is that what you were thinking when you destroyed my mother's violin?"

Ethan glared at me. "Stop harping on the violin. Sienna already apologized. Are you only going to be happy once you've ruined her?"

"What about my audition? And the concert?"

"It's one less chance, that's all." He pushed the pen at me again. "Sign it. Don't ruin everyone else's future over a tantrum."

I looked at him for a moment, and suddenly I laughed.

Then I took the divorce papers I'd already signed out of my suitcase and laid them on top of the statement.

"Fine. Let's sign."

I took off my wedding ring. "But these are the papers that need your signature."

He picked up the papers, then saw the suitcase, and for the first time, panic flashed across his face. "Where are you going?"

"Helsinki."

"I don't agree to this."

"I'm not asking."

He blocked the door, his voice tight. "We can redo the concert. We can buy another violin.

"Sienna was wrong, and I'll make her apologize. There's no need to threaten divorce just because you're upset."

I looked at the man I'd loved for so many years.

My eyes still stung, but I had no desire to turn back.

"Ethan, I'm not doing this out of spite."

I pulled up the handle of my suitcase and looked him in the eye. "I used to think that if I just put up with it one more time, you'd eventually turn around and look at me.

"But every time you turned around, it was her you were looking at."

The color slowly drained from his face. "Nora, what are you saying?"

I pushed his hand away. "I mean you two can have another eight years together, and then another. As for this marriage, I don't want it anymore."

Behind him, Sienna called softly, "Ethan."

And once again, without thinking, he turned to look.

This time, I didn't cry, and I didn't stay.

I opened the door, wheeled my suitcase out into the rain, and never looked back.

After the last stop on the tour, Ethan asked me to dinner. It was the restaurant where we'd had our first date.At the table for two by the window, there was no wagyu for Sienna and no durian dessert that would trigger my allergy. There was only pan-seared salmon, mushrooms, and a green salad.Ethan mixed a small dish of sauce and set it in front of me."I think this is how you like it."He'd gotten every step right, but I didn't pick up my fork."When did you learn that?""After you left."Ethan looked at the little dish and gave a rueful smile."Whenever you sat across from me, all I cared about was cutting Sienna's steak."I didn't realize how often I'd ignored you until you left."Four years earlier, we'd come here for our first date as a married couple.Back then, he'd cut the first piece of fish for me and put it on my plate, promising he'd never let me eat alone. The promise was real.So was the forgetting.Ethan took out a small box. Inside were our wedding rings."After the di

The day the divorce was finalized, Sienna came to Helsinki. She was waiting for me at a café near the rehearsal hall, the gold cooler box on the table."Ethan deleted all my contact information."She'd cut her hair short, and her makeup wasn't flawless anymore."After I missed out on the promotion, they moved me to a regular staff position. All the friends who used to flock around me are gone, too."I didn't sit down. I just looked at her. "What does that have to do with me?"Sienna was quiet for a moment, then opened the box.The photo inside had been torn to pieces, and the membership card had been cut in half."I just want to know. Do you really not love him at all anymore?""That's none of your business.""He waits for you every day," Sienna said, her voice shaking. "He's hated the cold since he was a kid, and now he'll stand outside for hours just to catch a glimpse of you."I met her eyes. "If you feel sorry for him, that has nothing to do with me either."Her tears fell on the t

Ethan started digging into everything that had happened over the past three years. He remembered the diamond bracelet on Sienna's wrist. It had never been a gift for a client. That day, Sienna had said she'd been passed over for a promotion and was feeling down, so on a whim he'd given her the bracelet. He'd long since forgotten who he'd originally bought it for.Only when he found the purchase record did he see the note on the order."Third anniversary. For Nora."He pulled up his car's trip log from our anniversary last year. The "emergency" at work had lasted all of 40 minutes. He'd spent the rest of the night with Sienna, eating dessert, shopping for groceries, and posing for a couples membership photo. In the photo, Sienna was beaming. She'd asked him then, "Won't Nora be sad, home all by herself?"He'd said, "She's very understanding."He'd used that one word, understanding, to excuse so many of the ways he'd let me down.Ethan canceled the membership card and tossed the gold coo

Ethan locked the papers in a drawer, thinking I'd be back in a few days. Before, whenever we fought, I'd stay at a hotel for one night at most. The next day, he'd send flowers or jewelry, and I'd give us both a way to save face. This time, out of habit, he ordered flowers again. But the delivery driver called to say no one was home to sign for them. When Ethan got home, he found half the closet empty. In the music room, my sheet music, my metronome, and my award certificates were all gone.Where our wedding photo used to hang, there was only a pale square on the wall. There was a note stuck to the fridge door."Please give the divorce papers to my lawyer. Do whatever you want with everything else."He clutched the note until his knuckles slowly turned white. When Sienna came in carrying groceries, he was clearing the dining table."Ethan, when's Nora coming back? I bought the things she likes—""What does she like?"Ethan looked up, and his voice was so cold it stopped her in her track

When the new violin arrived, Sienna was in the kitchen wearing my pajamas and mixing Ethan an electrolyte drink for his hangover. They'd been at a class reunion the night before and hadn't come home until early morning.I'd spent the whole night on standby with the orchestra. No one had asked where I was.The man from the violin shop opened the case. The new violin had cost a fortune. My name was engraved on the neck.I glanced at it and said calmly, "Send it back."Sienna came over with the glass. "Ethan spent all afternoon picking it out. Don't throw his thoughtfulness back in his face."My voice was cold. "Stay out of my business."Her hand jerked, the glass hit the floor, and water splashed over her feet.Ethan rushed over to steady her.Sienna said through tears, "I was only trying to talk Nora into accepting it."Ethan rounded on me. "Do you have to make everyone miserable?"I looked at the pajamas she was wearing. "Those are mine."Sienna clutched at the collar. "I drank too muc
