Chapter 5

Author: Through Meteorites
I stood behind the camera, watching Edith and Caden embrace on screen. It was as if I were nothing more than an outsider watching them.

After filming ended, everyone gathered around the monitor to watch the final cut.

With the snow, the white suit, and the ring, the shot of Edith and Caden holding each other looked too perfect to be real.

Edith suddenly walked over to me.

As if afraid someone would notice, she quietly took my hand.

Then she took another ring out of her pocket and whispered, "Holden, that was just for the shoot. This is the real deal."

I had waited so long for this moment. I had always wanted her to choose me when the cameras weren't rolling.

But now, as I watched the ring slide onto my finger, I felt nothing at all.

Because the ring slipped down loosely. It was one size too big.

It would have fit Caden's finger perfectly instead.

Edith froze for a moment before quietly explaining, "I might have bought the wrong size. I'll exchange it when we get back."

I looked at the ring that didn't fit. Suddenly, I felt too tired to even smile.

Someone shouted from nearby, "Edith, the celebration dinner is starting!"

Edith looked at me.

"Holden, I'm going to join them for a bit," she said. "Head back once you're done with the editing."

I nodded. "Okay."

That was the last time I would ever say that to her.

But I would never go back.

While they went to the celebration dinner, I went back to the hotel alone to pack.

All the footage on my laptop had already been organized.

On the channel, I removed all of my access permissions.

In the early hours of the morning, I boarded the plane alone. The snow outside grew farther away, and I never looked back.

It was the last love story I would ever write for them and the last shot I would ever film for Edith.

From then on, no matter which snowfield or coastline I traveled to, I would never return to Edith's side.

Meanwhile, at the celebration dinner, Edith opened the final edit. Her hand stopped in midair for a second.

She stared at the words "The Final One", and an uneasy feeling settled in her chest.

A moment later, a notification popped up on her phone.

Edith stared at the notification, the smile on her face instantly fading.

She shot to her feet, her face slowly turning pale.

The message was a system notification from the channel dashboard.

It read, "Holden Smith has relinquished all admin access. All scripts, footage, and editing projects for the channel have completed their final handover."

Edith stared at those lines, and the shock instantly cleared half the alcohol from her mind.

People around her were still raising their glasses.

"Edith, tonight's final cut was amazing!" someone said. "The 'Eden' proposal video is definitely going to blow up."

Edith didn't respond. She kept staring at the words "The Final One", and her chest suddenly felt hollow.

It felt as if something important had quietly disappeared from her life.

She immediately called me.

The first call went unanswered.

The second call was the same.

The third call only gave her an automated message saying the phone was turned off.

Edith shot to her feet, knocking her chair backward.

Caden was startled. He asked, "Edith, what's wrong?"

Edith didn't even look at him. She grabbed her car keys and rushed out.

When she returned to the hotel, the room was already empty. My suitcase and the camera I usually used were gone.

All that was left was the ring that didn't fit on the table. It sat quietly beside a white note.

There was only one sentence on the paper.

"Edith, the final cut is finished. From now on, you'll have to film your own love story."

Edith stood frozen in place for a long while.

Only then did she remember the way the ring had slipped loosely down my finger when she put it on me.

Back then, all she said was, "I might have bought the wrong size. I'll exchange it when we get back."

But she never stopped to think.

How could something I had waited years for be dismissed as nothing more than a mistake?

What was even more ridiculous was that she had bought Caden's size.

Edith held onto the edge of the table, her knuckles slowly turning white.

Her phone buzzed again.

It was a message from Irene. "Edith, what's going on with Holden? He revoked all his access to the channel.

"Who's going to handle the scripts for the next episodes?"

I looked at Edith. There was a time when I had spent years waiting to hear those words. But now, the wind carried them away as soon as they were spoken.I kept my composure and said calmly, "Edith, everything you're saying now is what I used to long to hear."A glimmer of hope lit up her eyes.I continued, "But it's too late. They don't mean anything to me any longer."Edith gripped the ring tightly in her hand. "Holden…"My eyes fell on it. "Put the ring away. I don't want it anymore. "And you don't need to make up for the proposal on the snowy mountain. I've already come here and seen it many times on my own."I lifted my camera. In the viewfinder were the snow-covered mountains glowing in the distance."Now, I'm the main character of my own story," I said. With that, I walked past her toward the production team.Edith remained where she was. It seemed she finally understood. Some people left not because they were waiting for someone to chase after them. They left bec

It was the emptiness left behind after years of being compared, replaced, and forced to say it didn't matter.I folded up my tripod and spoke calmly. "Caden, I don't hate you anymore."Caden looked up suddenly, a faint spark of hope appearing in his eyes. But the next second, I said, "But I don't want to keep you as a friend either."The color drained completely from his face. "Holden…"I picked up my camera bag and walked past him.Caden stayed where he was and didn't follow. When I reached the end of the shore, I looked back.He was still standing there, his light-colored coat blowing wildly in the wind.I lifted my camera and pointed it at the last bit of sunlight in the distance. Then, I pressed the shutter.…I created my channel that night. My first video was of a black sand beach, crashing waves, and the sound of wind.Standing in front of the camera, I said, "The wind is strong today, but I no longer have to stay behind the scenes anymore."When I posted that vid

When Caden found me, I was filming a sunset by the sea.The wind was strong that day. Waves crashed against the black rocks one after another. The lights on the fishing boats in the distance had just turned on.A faint orange glow was covering the horizon.I crouched beside my tripod, adjusting the final settings. My fingers were stiff from the wind, but I was at peace.A familiar voice suddenly came from behind me."Holden."I stopped what I was doing for a moment. When I turned around, I saw Caden standing a short distance away.He wore a light-colored coat. His hair was messy from the sea breeze, and his face was very pale.He looked nothing like the handsome, radiant Caden everyone saw on camera.Instead, he seemed a little worse for wear. With red-rimmed eyes, he looked at the camera in my hands, then back at me."You really don't plan on coming back?" he asked.I didn't answer. I just looked down and checked the footage on the screen.Caden took two steps forward.

Back home, the 'Eden' channel quickly started running into problems.Edith continued shooting with Caden as usual, but without my scripts, they couldn't say a single natural line in front of the camera.Caden tried to look up and smile the way he used to, but Edith was always too slow to react. After the final edits were released, the comments section had a different kind of reaction for the first time."Why does it all feel so strange?""The attention to detail from before is gone.""The lines are so awkward. It feels forced.""Did they change their production team?"The brand partners started pushing them too. "Edith, when will the next script be ready?"Edith sat in the studio, looking through the hard drive I left behind. The folders were all neatly organized by year."First version of 'Eden'.""First snow scene shoot.""Edith's birthday special.""Proposal script draft."She clicked on the last folder. Inside it was a very old document. The title read, "The Snowy Mo

Edith suddenly felt her throat tighten. For those three years, she had gotten used to me always being there. She was used to me writing the scripts ahead of time, planning every shot, and marking the best lighting angles. She had grown accustomed to having someone arrange every meaningful glance and pause whenever she and Caden stepped in front of the camera. She thought that was just part of the process. It wasn't until I left that she realized those moments that seemed so naturally romantic were all something I had built for them, one frame at a time.…When I landed in Northria, it was early morning.Snow was falling outside the airport. A car from the production team came to pick me up. The driver was a blonde woman who smiled as she helped me load my equipment cases into the car.The first stop was a seaside town. Before sunrise, I followed the crew out to scout locations. With my camera on my back, I stepped into the half-melted snow, and my pant legs quickly became soa
