CHAPTER 14: UNFORESEEN

"I can't believe we actually made it," Avery whispers to me as we enter the class at exactly 9:00 am. "I almost regretted doing the whole marathon thing."

"Really?" I raise an eyebrow, finding it hard to believe.

"Keyword 'almost,'" she smirks, fully aware she'd do it all over again given the chance.

With a smile and a shake of my head, we head toward our usual row, only to discover that it's completely occupied, as are the seats around us.

I'm about to suggest to Avery that we sneak out after signing the attendance sheet and ask someone for notes later when she nudges my arm and nods toward the back row. "There are two seats in the back," she says, her eyes widening with an evil grin spreading across her face. Curious, I raise my head to see what's behind her Cheshire imitation.

And when I do, I roll my eyes both at her and at the scene unfolding before me.
