3. Thrown To The Streets

Marina was determined not to give up on her marriage. The next morning, she set out of the house, in search of a job that would fetch her some money to go through the artificial conception method.

Over the years of their marriage, she had asked him to give her a job at one of his companies, but he refused, promising to take care of all her needs and assuring her that she would never lack anything. But he changed. He no longer gave her money for upkeep. That aside, if she needed to save this marriage, she had to have a child with him.

After roaming half of Morvane city, no one was willing to offer a job to a college dropout. Exhausted from the day’s job hunting and all the challenges life had thrown at her in the past few days, she headed back home, hoping that Collin would have considered the love they used to share and change his mind about ending the marriage.

She was ready to do anything. Go on her knees, do the worst thing he would ask her to do. She just needed to gain back his favor.

-

She was welcomed back into the house by four pair of eyes piercing into hers. Lady Carter, Leila, Collin, and another woman she had never seen. She was tall, with distinct feminine features that made her look like a runway model straight out of a fashion magazine.

“The barren is here,” Leila announced upon Marina’s arrival. A mocking laughter slipped past her lips as she linked her arm with the strange woman in their midst. “Just take a look at her wretched dress.”

Lady Carter took subtle steps towards Marina, halting in front of her. Marina dropped her gaze, but she tilted her chin to face her.

“You’ve been the problem all along.” Contempt flowed in her tone. “The reason the Carter family hasn’t produced an heir.”

“Yes, she’s been the reason.” Collin joined his mother where she stood, hand still on Marina’s chin. “She knows this, but kept it from all of us.”

An uncontrollable rage surged through Lady Carter. She released Marina, her palm striking sharply against her face before shoving her away. Peals of laughter spluttered out of Leila and her friend as Marina cradled the stinging flesh, tears streaking down her cheeks.

“You whore.” Lady Carter spat, her eyes gleaming with fury.

“She was one before I married her,” Collin added. “The greatest mistake of my life.”

“I’m glad your eyes are open now,” Leila yelled from where she stood, watching the drama with satisfaction.

“How dare you lie to the Carter family? You knew you were barren, yet you stayed in this marriage, deceiving my son.”

Marina opened her mouth, but no word came out. Her vision blurred with tears.

“It’s all over now.” Collin stepped in, dusting off a paper before her. “The divorce papers are ready.”

A wave of numbness swept over Marina. She roughly grabbed the papers, scanning through to be sure she heard him right.

“And I’ll make sure she leaves this marriage with nothing,” Lady Carter said.

“She came with nothing and will leave with nothing.” Leila joined them, the stranger woman still beside her.

The strange woman looked at Marina intently. Pity flashed through her gaze. Then her lips curved in a smile as she walked carefully towards Collin, wrapping her arms around him.

Eyes back on Marina, she muttered. “She looks pitiful, honey.”

“That’s what she deserves for lying to us.” Collin pulled her closer, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “You’re my choice now, Ivy.”

Ivy. Her name echoed in her head, taunting her. Leila had successfully hooked her friend with her husband.

Too weak to stand, Marina dropped to the floor, hands on her face. The tears poured hard.

“Sign the papers now.” Leila kicked her on her tummy, but the pain of a physical assault was nothing compared to the stabbing pain from a broken heart.

“Now.” Lady Carter raised her voice in threat. “We do not want gold diggers like you in our family.”

Marina’s gaze landed on her husband and his new mistress. The weight of the betrayal squeezed her chest so tightly she feared she might not survive it.

He was her entire life. She gave all her life to him. Body, soul, and all she knew to have. She lost herself in the marriage, and now, he was ending it cruelly.

“Sign now, and get the hell out of this house. We have had enough of your bad luck.” Lady Carter screamed this time.

“Collins.” The whole of her body ached. “Please, don’t do this to me. I have nowhere to go.” Maybe he would change his mind if she begged him.

“Then go live on the streets.” He threw a bag at her, forcing the pen in her hand. “Sign now.” His eyes held so much contempt, and she was scared he might hit her if she didn’t take the pen from him. “Now, bitch.”

With a shaky hand, she took the pen from him, her tears dropping onto the paper. She read and signed her part, dropping it on the floor.

Her bones were weak, deterring her from standing, but with the little strength she had, she held onto the couch and helped herself up. Grabbing her bag, she took a firm look at everyone present in the living room, etching their scornful faces on her mind.

“Get out of our house,” Leila yelled, attempting to walk towards her and push her out of the house, but Collin stopped her.

“She will leave when she stops gawking at us like an idiot.” He told his sister, and they all laughed mockingly at Marina. “You should be happy I let you leave with a bag. You came into this house with rags. I clothed you.”

“She was just spending your money while being a liability.” Lady Carter went over to sit down. She crossed her legs and took a sip from her blue wine. “Get out, barren.”

Marina wiped the tears off her face. She grabbed her bag, turning slowly towards the exit of the living room. She took quiet, painful steps out of the house she once called home. Her home.

When she got outside, she looked back at the mansion that stood before her, and only one thing came to her mind.

Revenge.

She didn’t know how, but she would make them pay for treating her like trash.  With that, she walked out of the Carters’ mansion with no destination on her mind.

Cassian hadn’t returned any of her calls. She had contemplated visiting him several times, but she kept holding back. He probably didn’t want to see her right now. She’d spoken with Clara over the phone, and from what the older woman told her, Cassian hadn’t been at home for three days. She was greatly worried about him, but it killed her more that she couldn’t see him.Roselyn sat next to her, offering her a glass of juice, but she didn’t take it. “I hate that you keep going over the same thing over and over again, Marina. This whole thing would have been avoided if you had told him the truth from the beginning.”“You know I had my reason for keeping it a secret from him.”Now that she thought of it, she might as well be wrong. Cassian always supported everything she did. He could have asked her to go easy because she was carrying a baby, but he’d never deter her from achieving her dreams.“Same reason that’s causing you to wallow in regret now.” Roselyn rolled her eyes. “What do you

TWO MONTHS LATERCassian’s and Marina’s relationship was blossoming again, more beautifully than it’d ever been this time. Though she’d yet to move back into his house, she visited him frequently, sleeping over most times. His life seemed good now that she was back with him. The handover at the Vale Empire would take place in three months, and the board has scheduled the final meeting to finalize the votes before preparations commence. As expected, Adam won the round. After losing his ticket, Daniel had suggested a vote round and bribed more men to stay on his side, but Adam’s promises seemed greater. Daniel shot Cassian a look, angry that he didn’t care so much about losing to his uncle. After the meeting, they vacated the hall, but Daniel stayed back. Fury burned in his eyes. “There is still time to consider the idea I told you about, Cassian. He won the vote round with just 4% of the vote. Imagine, we have more men on our side too, we just need a more solid backup until we have our

Roselyn was breathing hard by the time she broke the kiss. Her lips were so swollen, they hurt. She never intended to have her first kiss with Dominic today, but it felt good.“I didn’t. We shouldn’t.” She sighed, not meeting his eyes. “Oh, goodness. This wasn’t my intention when I kissed you, Dominic.” She was saying too much at once. The kiss had messed up her system. “We should return to the kitchen.”He laughed softly. “Relax.” He held her hand. “We kissed, and it was beautiful.”Roselyn’s eyes widened. How was he still composed when she was literally losing her mind? “I just wanted her to stay away from you, I promise.”“But why?” He asked as he led the way into the kitchen.“Why what?” She asked, confused.“Why do you want her to stay away from me? Do you like me?”“Oh, goodness.” She shook her head. “You’re misunderstanding the whole point here, Dominic.” She settled into the tall chair in the kitchen, grabbing an apple. She bit into it to calm her nerves.“I’d like an explanat

Roselyn’s eyes scoured the living room of Dominic’s penthouse in a quick glance. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the skyline. Expensive, carefully curated furniture. Every detail was intentional, but it lacked the kind of warmth that made it feel like a real home.“Welcome to my house, Roselyn.” Smiling, he gestured around, observing how she carefully surveyed the house. “Have a seat.”“Thank you,” she sighed. “You live here alone?”“Yes, had to get a smaller space after my divorce.”Her eyes widened. Did he just call this place? If this was small, then her apartment was minute.“It’s huge and very decent.” If Cassian hadn’t bought her a house after getting together with Marina, this kind of building would be strange to her. All thanks to Cassian, she had tasted luxury too, and wasn’t overly impressed as she would have been eight months ago. “It’s nice.”“Thanks. Make yourself comfortable while I get you something to drink. Water or soda?”“Water is just fine, Dominic.”After serving

“He missed you terribly.” Clara’s words cut the air, breaking the silence. Marina hadn’t expected to run into her so early that morning. She’d been avoiding a conversation because she didn’t want Clara to bring up what she saw yesterday.“He was turning into something else during your absence. I’m glad you’re back for him.”Marina brought the cup closer to her mouth and gently sipped from the coffee, allowing the words to sink in without guilt.“How terrible was it?” She asked Clara.“So bad Lily had to step in because he was drinking all the time, almost losing himself.” Clara walked down to where Marina was sitting in the kitchen. She held her hand and looked at her with a pleading gaze. “Please, don’t leave him anymore. I’ve never seen him in such a devastating state. Anne and I were genuinely scared for him.”Marina’s thundered. She wasn’t planning to leave Cassian again after everything that happened. She would stay with him, but no matter how much she concluded that she would s

“Hey,” he stroked her hair gently.“Hey,” she responded, clutching their fingers. “I think Clara saw us. Now, how do I face her?”A nasty chuckle left Cassian. “We’re adults.” He reminded her in case she’d forgotten that they weren’t committing a crime by sleeping with each other. “And we had sex.”Marina covered her face with her palms. “That woman is going to tease me until she has the last of it. I'd better not run into her when I’m leaving.”Cassian pondered on her words for a moment. The thought of leaving made him feel uneasy, but as Lily had advised, he didn’t have to do it all at once. They would start all over, slowly, at her pace, until she was ready to come back to him.“She has a boyfriend, Marina.”She lifted her body from his chest. “You think that old woman is still having sex at this age?”Cassian shrugged, not saying a word.“No way.” She smiled in disbelief. “She’s way too old for that.”“You never can tell, dear Marina.” His lips were curved into a sly smile. “She’s

According to the test results, she was two weeks gone. Given her calculations, she had fallen pregnant that night she met with the stranger. Marina hauled her bag down the streets with tears streaming down her cheeks. She had nothing on her. There was no money, no savings, and now there was no marriage. She had invested all her time and life in making Collin comfortable in the marriage, forgetting that her own happiness mattered, too.
