MasukMarina responded—a single nod of approval. When he folded his tall, lean frame into the chair across from her, her gaze stayed on him for seconds longer than necessary, admiring his striking features.
He was casually dressed. Open-collar black shirt with matching black slacks. His sleek, jet-black hair was neatly styled to enhance his sharp jawline and handsome face.
His athletic build was not unusual, but strange because she had only seen men like him from afar, men whose presence alone exuded wealth and authority. Her ex-husband didn’t even come close.
The music thundering through the club dulled to a distant hum before it reached them. The corner they occupied was the most reserved part of the club. Perfect for her, as she immersed herself in the recent realities of her life.
A server, donning the same uniform as the one Roselyn wore, came forward to take his order. A bottle of red wine, the strongest as he had requested.
An hour later, his glass was still untouched, and Marina was still stealing glances. He set the bottle between them, his calculating eyes regarding her, catching her unusual stare.
“Is there a reason your eyes won’t leave me?” He asked, a hint of irritation roughening his deep voice.
Heat rose to her face. She quickly dragged her eyes away from him.
“I wasn’t staring.” She lied, but it was of no use because he had caught her plenty of times. She held his gaze, a sudden surge of courage hitting her. What if she admitted to staring at him? What would he do? “And what if I was staring? Is there a crime in admiring a good-looking man?”
After everything that had happened to her today, complimenting a stranger’s look should be the last thing that should cross her mind, but she just wanted to explore.
Now that she no longer had the life she used to have, she wanted to exercise her free will for once. It wasn’t as if she would see him again after tonight anyway, so why did it matter?
He said nothing. Instead, he poured himself a drink for the first time. He took a gentle sip, his eyes drifting back to her.
“What brings you here? To admire good-looking men?”
A light chuckle left her. His pretty face came with a great sense of humor. She surveyed the room quietly. “To have fun, just the way everyone else is having fun.”
“I see.” He lifted his glass for another sip, his movements carefully restrained.
“I am Marina,” she extended a hand forward.
An inner voice whispered to her that she was going too far, but who cared? This was the first personal contact she’d had with the opposite sex since she got married to Collin. She needed to utilize it.
Her hand lingered for a while. She expected him not to take it, but just as she was about to withdraw her hand, he slid in his. The connection of his skin against hers oddly warmed her chest, sparking a fire within her, the kind of fire she believed had been dead for months.
He bumped her hand, up and down. “Cassian.” He muttered, letting go of her hand.
She nodded, her lips curling. She could feel an attraction that leaned more towards steam, and it left her unsettled.
“I noticed you’ve been deep in thought before you picked up your bottle. Want to share?” She had her problems too.
In fact, hers could be more heart-wrenching, but she had always been the good girl who listened to others, sometimes chose them before she chose herself, and that was the reason her life was a mess today.
“You might be interested in doing other things for me than listening to my boring talks.” Cassian’s gaze locked onto hers. The intensity in them had shifted from sharpness into something like need.
Marina straightened in her chair. This seemed to be more fun than expected. For a moment, she forgot about her life’s predicament.
“I don’t want to be alone tonight.” He added, his words quietly stirring an interest within her.
“You won’t have to be.” She returned, too desperately, as if it were an opportunity she had been dying to have.
She tried not to blame herself for acting too desperately. All her life, she had been trapped in a cage, only doing what others wanted. Never what she truly wanted to do. She had never flirted with a man, and this was the first time she was exploring.
“I can keep you company.” That was too cheap, too easy, but she didn’t mind.
She wasn’t going to see him again after tonight. She didn’t think there was a crime in having fun to relieve herself of the stress she had been subjected to over the last few months.
He fixed his eyes on her, long, as though he was wondering how she could easily come up with such an idea without careful thought.
He lowered his glass, announcing that he was done with the drink. “If you’re willing, I’ll take you to my place.”
She nodded without hesitation. “Let’s see how it goes.”
He rose to his feet, and she mirrored his movements.
“Come with me,” he said, his voice thick with command.
Like a puppet, she followed him out of the club, her eyes straining around in search of Roselyn, but she didn’t catch a glimpse of her until she was out of the room. She hated to do this, but she would text her.
Knowing this was a bad idea, Marina slid his Rolls-Royce Phantom when he opened the door for her, gently closing it back after she settled in. That simple gesture left her chest warm. She had never received anything like that in her life.
As she sat in, she was tempted to change her mind about the whole thing. Following a stranger home was a reckless decision she shouldn’t even consider, but she didn’t want to go back home tonight.
There was nothing to lose. In fact, she stood to benefit from this arrangement. A good sex with a handsome man, a night of insane pleasure that would numb her mind to thoughts of Collin and his family.
And, she was barren. There was nothing to be scared of, even if they lost themselves in the moment without protection. She was willing to do this.
When he sat in the driver’s seat, he looked towards her, his eyes softening as they rested on her. “Are you sure about this?” He asked again.
Marina knew there was no going back from here. “Never been surer.” She answered, her tone firm and unwavering.
Cassian hadn’t returned any of her calls. She had contemplated visiting him several times, but she kept holding back. He probably didn’t want to see her right now. She’d spoken with Clara over the phone, and from what the older woman told her, Cassian hadn’t been at home for three days. She was greatly worried about him, but it killed her more that she couldn’t see him.Roselyn sat next to her, offering her a glass of juice, but she didn’t take it. “I hate that you keep going over the same thing over and over again, Marina. This whole thing would have been avoided if you had told him the truth from the beginning.”“You know I had my reason for keeping it a secret from him.”Now that she thought of it, she might as well be wrong. Cassian always supported everything she did. He could have asked her to go easy because she was carrying a baby, but he’d never deter her from achieving her dreams.“Same reason that’s causing you to wallow in regret now.” Roselyn rolled her eyes. “What do you
TWO MONTHS LATERCassian’s and Marina’s relationship was blossoming again, more beautifully than it’d ever been this time. Though she’d yet to move back into his house, she visited him frequently, sleeping over most times. His life seemed good now that she was back with him. The handover at the Vale Empire would take place in three months, and the board has scheduled the final meeting to finalize the votes before preparations commence. As expected, Adam won the round. After losing his ticket, Daniel had suggested a vote round and bribed more men to stay on his side, but Adam’s promises seemed greater. Daniel shot Cassian a look, angry that he didn’t care so much about losing to his uncle. After the meeting, they vacated the hall, but Daniel stayed back. Fury burned in his eyes. “There is still time to consider the idea I told you about, Cassian. He won the vote round with just 4% of the vote. Imagine, we have more men on our side too, we just need a more solid backup until we have our
Roselyn was breathing hard by the time she broke the kiss. Her lips were so swollen, they hurt. She never intended to have her first kiss with Dominic today, but it felt good.“I didn’t. We shouldn’t.” She sighed, not meeting his eyes. “Oh, goodness. This wasn’t my intention when I kissed you, Dominic.” She was saying too much at once. The kiss had messed up her system. “We should return to the kitchen.”He laughed softly. “Relax.” He held her hand. “We kissed, and it was beautiful.”Roselyn’s eyes widened. How was he still composed when she was literally losing her mind? “I just wanted her to stay away from you, I promise.”“But why?” He asked as he led the way into the kitchen.“Why what?” She asked, confused.“Why do you want her to stay away from me? Do you like me?”“Oh, goodness.” She shook her head. “You’re misunderstanding the whole point here, Dominic.” She settled into the tall chair in the kitchen, grabbing an apple. She bit into it to calm her nerves.“I’d like an explanat
Roselyn’s eyes scoured the living room of Dominic’s penthouse in a quick glance. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the skyline. Expensive, carefully curated furniture. Every detail was intentional, but it lacked the kind of warmth that made it feel like a real home.“Welcome to my house, Roselyn.” Smiling, he gestured around, observing how she carefully surveyed the house. “Have a seat.”“Thank you,” she sighed. “You live here alone?”“Yes, had to get a smaller space after my divorce.”Her eyes widened. Did he just call this place? If this was small, then her apartment was minute.“It’s huge and very decent.” If Cassian hadn’t bought her a house after getting together with Marina, this kind of building would be strange to her. All thanks to Cassian, she had tasted luxury too, and wasn’t overly impressed as she would have been eight months ago. “It’s nice.”“Thanks. Make yourself comfortable while I get you something to drink. Water or soda?”“Water is just fine, Dominic.”After serving
“He missed you terribly.” Clara’s words cut the air, breaking the silence. Marina hadn’t expected to run into her so early that morning. She’d been avoiding a conversation because she didn’t want Clara to bring up what she saw yesterday.“He was turning into something else during your absence. I’m glad you’re back for him.”Marina brought the cup closer to her mouth and gently sipped from the coffee, allowing the words to sink in without guilt.“How terrible was it?” She asked Clara.“So bad Lily had to step in because he was drinking all the time, almost losing himself.” Clara walked down to where Marina was sitting in the kitchen. She held her hand and looked at her with a pleading gaze. “Please, don’t leave him anymore. I’ve never seen him in such a devastating state. Anne and I were genuinely scared for him.”Marina’s thundered. She wasn’t planning to leave Cassian again after everything that happened. She would stay with him, but no matter how much she concluded that she would s
“Hey,” he stroked her hair gently.“Hey,” she responded, clutching their fingers. “I think Clara saw us. Now, how do I face her?”A nasty chuckle left Cassian. “We’re adults.” He reminded her in case she’d forgotten that they weren’t committing a crime by sleeping with each other. “And we had sex.”Marina covered her face with her palms. “That woman is going to tease me until she has the last of it. I'd better not run into her when I’m leaving.”Cassian pondered on her words for a moment. The thought of leaving made him feel uneasy, but as Lily had advised, he didn’t have to do it all at once. They would start all over, slowly, at her pace, until she was ready to come back to him.“She has a boyfriend, Marina.”She lifted her body from his chest. “You think that old woman is still having sex at this age?”Cassian shrugged, not saying a word.“No way.” She smiled in disbelief. “She’s way too old for that.”“You never can tell, dear Marina.” His lips were curved into a sly smile. “She’s
Earlier today, she was on the streets in search of a job, trying to save her marriage, but tonight, she was comfortably sitting in a stranger’s car, on her way to have fun. Life was indeed a mystery.Throughout the journey home, her insides tingled with the anticipation of what was to come, and she
Marina hauled her bag down the streets with tears streaming down her cheeks. She had nothing on her. There was no money, no savings, and now there was no marriage. She had invested all her time and life in making Collin comfortable in the marriage, forgetting that her own happiness mattered, too.
Marina was determined not to give up on her marriage. The next morning, she set out of the house, in search of a job that would fetch her some money to go through the artificial conception method.Over the years of their marriage, she had asked him to give her a job at one of his companies, but he r
