Chapter 4

Author: Frostpine
Jameson got out of the car without a word.

He still believed I'd run away from home in a fit of childish anger. Every time someone brought me up, he looked disgusted, like I'd embarrassed him.

Caitlyn snapped, "What could possibly be more important than Isabella's competition? I think Mia did it on purpose. She saw Isabella win and couldn't handle it, so she stayed away out of jealousy."

Before I turned thirteen, Caitlyn had treated me well.

Everything changed after Isabella reunited with my parents.

In Caitlyn's eyes, I was just a delicate, pretty face, no different from those seductive women outside. But Isabella was different—confident, capable, dazzling.

She was the kind of woman who shone.

And I… I would never measure up.

I looked at Caitlyn's face, tense with anger.

'Mom, I'm not staying away on purpose. There's no way for me to come.'

As she walked inside, she kept talking, "Jameson, it's not easy for you. Mia's been spoiled since she was little. That's why she's willful and headstrong. She runs off the moment something doesn't go her way. Just ignore her. She's not here, but we're still a family."

Isabella came down the stairs. She wore mostly black—her tall frame lean and athletic. She was a picture of health.

The moment Jameson saw her, his eyes lit up.

Isabella sat beside him. "Mom, don't talk about Mia like that. This is all my fault. Jameson left the wedding because of me. If Mia acted out, it's only natural."

Her eyes brimmed with guilt.

Jameson immediately responded, "Isabella, this has nothing to do with you. MB is such a big event, of course I had to be there. The wedding... was just a formality."

Caitlyn added, "It's all Mia's fault. No sense of propriety—so petty. Her sister wins a championship and she throws a tantrum. She's so short-sighted, just like those women who rely on men to get by—small-minded and pathetic!"

I sat there, listening to them lift Isabella up by tearing me down.

And for the first time, I regretted the choices I made.

Once, long ago, I too was a racecar driver. Fast and fearless.

But then...

Jameson liked long hair, so I grew mine out.

He liked gentle women, so I softened myself, tried to be quieter, more tender.

I changed, again and again, all for him. And still, this is where I ended up.

After dinner, Jameson went to rest in my room. It was painted a fresh shade of green. He sat on the couch by the window.

Isabella's room was right next door. It used to be mine—until she returned to our family. Then I moved to the smaller one.

A knock came at the door.

Isabella entered with a plate of fruit. "Jameson, have some fruit."

The sight of her reminded Jameson of the kiss they'd shared the night before—how they couldn't stop themselves. His heart visibly stirred.

"Thanks, Isabella."

I moved to block her, instinctively.

But I forgot—I was no longer alive. I was just a soul now. I couldn't stop her.

She sat beside him, peeled a grape, and brought it to his lips.

He hesitated, then opened his mouth and bit into it gently.

She had changed clothes. A fitted black dress hugged her figure. She looked elegant and mysterious.

I could feel his gaze shift.

And sure enough, the next second, Jameson turned and pinned her beneath him, whispering, "Isabella, you're so beautiful."

Isabella, usually cool and reserved, wrapped her legs around him. "Jameson, do you want to…do it?"

That line—it struck him deep, scratched some primal itch.

As I watched the scene unfold, I nearly shattered.

'Get out. Get out of my room!'

I screamed, over and over. But they didn't hear me. Instead, they sank deeper into each other, shameless and oblivious.

I'd only been dead a day. And already, my husband and my sister were doing something worse than anything animals could.

I couldn't accept it. It drove me mad. But there was nothing I could do.

Ever since their first time together, Jameson and Isabella had been sneaking around behind everyone's backs. In my room, no less.

Nearly a week had passed, and still, I hadn't returned.

Jameson cleaned up the mess they'd made.

Isabella got dressed. Together, they went downstairs like nothing had happened, sitting at the dinner table as if the day were normal.

Over dinner, Isabella mentioned me. "Mia still hasn't come back?"

Jameson didn't even look up. "No."

"It's been a week?" Caitlyn frowned.

I was never the warmest person, but I didn't usually stay angry for long. Even she was surprised I hadn't returned after all this time.

Isabella peeled a shrimp for Jameson. "You should apologize to her. It's not worth dragging this out over something so small."

I was used to this. She always seemed so generous, like she didn't care about comparisons between us. But somehow, the things that were mine always ended up in her hands.

Now, she had Jameson too. And he listened to her.

"There've been some issues with the team," he said. "Once I finish up, I'll call her. We'll talk."

Jameson managed the Phantom Speed team. It was part of the Jameson family's business. His grandfather had placed him there to gain experience.

A week had passed. My body might've been destroyed already.

Talk? How does a dead woman talk to the living?

When Caitlyn heard about problems with the team, she immediately turned concerned. "Jameson, focus on the team. Isabella just signed with Phantom Speed—there can't be any problems. As for Mia, don't worry about her. Your dad's getting discharged in a couple of days. Mia's always been filial. She'll definitely come home for him."

I used to think that thirteen years of living with Caitlyn, even without blood ties, would count for something.

But I was wrong.

In her heart, Isabella had always been the one who mattered. Whenever it came down to Isabella's interests, she never hesitated. Her choice was always Isabella.

Thirteen years was nothing but a dream.

Paul had a weak heart. He'd been hospitalized recently. He was due to be discharged the day after tomorrow.

At home, he was always overshadowed by Caitlyn, too meek to stand up for himself.

Even when he showed me kindness, it was done in secret.

They all believed I'd come back for him, because I had always been obedient. That's what they liked most about me.

The day Paul was discharged, Jameson finished his work with the team.

He drove to the hospital.

Outside the room, he overheard the nurse speaking. "Please be patient. Mr. Dawson needs a full-body checkup before he can be discharged. Mr. Dawson, you're so lucky to have such a beautiful and devoted daughter. She came here so early on such a cold day just to take you home. It's really touching."

'Ah. So she's finally decided to come back,' Jameson thought as he quickened his steps and pushed open the door.

"Mia, how long are you planning to keep this up?"

"Yeah, if there hadn't been that mix-up at birth, Isabella probably would've been the one marrying Jameson. I heard that Mia is spoiled and temperamental, always running away from home. She still hasn't returned home yet," a woman said."No wonder Jameson is here with Isabella. Tsk, women really shouldn't be so dramatic," another added.I never responded to Jameson's messages. In a fit of anger, he brought Isabella to the party instead. The two women gossiping were Jameson's aunts—Adam was the third son of the Rhodes family, with two older brothers above him. I couldn't help but laugh at Isabella's words.Listen to her—how gracious she sounded. That casual "there's no need" was dripping with contempt, as if she were saying, I'm a renowned female racer. Why would I even bother with some fake heiress? But only I knew the truth: all the honors Isabella had today were stolen from me.Back then, if she hadn't suddenly fallen ill right before the race, I never would have been forced by my mentor to fill in for her at the last minute. And it was that race that completely destroyed my career.During the competition, the engine malfunctioned, and my car flipped. I was trapped in the raging fire, suffering severe burns and multiple fractures. Even my eye disease that had been cured once flared up again. The doctor had warned me that if my condition ever relapsed, it would be irreversible. And sure enough, when I finally woke up in the hospital, the world before me was nothing but a blur—I couldn't see a thing.None of the Dawson family, not ev

Even Marcus couldn't help feeling a little curious.I wasn't expecting Sebastian to say anything moving, but I still found myself wanting to hear how he would respond. But to my surprise, Sebastian simply lifted his foot and walked out, tossing back an indifferent remark, "You're overthinking it."Just like that. He was cold as ever.I stared at his departing figure, feeling a stab of regret. If only I had gotten along with him back then.Maybe he would've recognized me by now—and maybe, just maybe, the real killer would already be brought to justice. But no. We had been sworn enemies. If Sebastian ever found out that the headless female corpse was actually me, he would probably sneer and say, "Mia, weren't you so proud of yourself? Look at you now. Beheaded. Serves you right."…Meanwhile, Jameson headed to the Dawson family's house.Caitlyn was busy at the hospital and wasn't home.Paul invited him in for some tea.But Jameson raised his hand to stop him. I turned my head at the sound and saw Sebastian walk in.He was tall and broad-shouldered, his features sharp and defined. Dressed in a white lab coat, his posture was straight and commanding. A pair of gold-rimmed glasses perched on the bridge of his nose, he exuded a natural air of sophistication. The only thing that stood out was the coldness in his eyes — a chill as cutting as a winter glacier.Jameson was drawn by the noise too. When his gaze locked with Sebastian's, he froze. A flicker of guilt flashed across his face.It took him a long moment before he spoke, stammering, "Y-You're back, Sebastian?"But Sebastian barely gave him a glance, as if even acknowledging him was beneath him.He turned instead and handed a report to Marcus."I tested the wound's cut angle and bleeding pattern," he said flatly. "Based on the blade material, thickness, and shape, I filtered through industrial and kitchen knives and selected the ones that matched the characteristics of the murder wea

This time, a few undercover officers from the Vallencourt precinct had staked out the area for over a month before finally arresting a dozen or so people.Since Marcus hadn't been able to directly participate in the headless corpse case, he'd had a lot of free time lately. That was why the higher-ups assigned him the task of handling the interrogations.Inside the car, Marcus glanced over, puzzled. "Why are you following me?"Jameson's mind flashed back to that photo of Mia kissing another man. His voice was cold as ice. "To catch someone."Even though his tone stayed calm, the anger beneath it was impossible to miss."You're not a cop. Who are you catching?"Jameson let out a low, mocking laugh. "Marcus, in your mind, Mia must be some pure, untouchable angel, huh?"Marcus turned his head slightly. "What's that supposed to mean?"Jameson didn't waste time. He pulled up the photo—the one of Mia kissing that stranger—and shoved it at Marcus."See for yourself. Mia's not as pure

George was over eighty, but his slap still packed a punch. Without warning, his palm struck the other side of Jameson's face. The suddenness of it made my spirit jolt backward."Grandpa, Mia, she..." Jameson started, wanting to tell him about the affair. But then he remembered Adam's warning and bit his tongue. If Grandpa found out he couldn't even manage his own marriage, he'd think Jameson was incompetent."So many days have passed, and you still haven't found Mia? What the hell have you been doing?" George barked. He sat upright on the bed, his face pale and weary. The weather had turned colder, and his age showed in the way even a mild cold took a toll on him.Jameson immediately answered, "Don't worry, Grandpa. I'll find Mia soon. She's just angry. Once I talk to her properly and say a few nice words, she'll come back."I listened to his smug self-assurance and let out a silent, bitter laugh.Even if I weren't already dead, even if I were alive, after all the filthy thing

Jameson caressed Isabella possessively. The temperature inside the car began to rise."Alright," she said, "you're my one and only."Jameson curled his lips into a satisfied smile. "Isabella," he murmured, "you feel so good."Isabella caught his hand. "There are people outside.""Relax, there's an anti-peeping film. No one can see inside. Doesn't that make it even more exciting?"I couldn't even be mad anymore.Just a moment ago, Jameson had been furious. Now, he was already playing these little games with Isabella.Maybe he really did believe I had cheated. Maybe that was why he felt no guilt, why he could do this even now, with her.…At the Rhodes's family home, Adam threw the divorce papers straight at Jameson's face. "Don't even think about it!"Disgust flickered in Jameson's eyes. "Dad, that bitch Mia ran off over something trivial and now she's fooling around with some random guy. Why shouldn't I divorce her?""You think a few photos are enough to prove she cheated?"

I stared at Jameson's furious face, feeling nothing but silent exasperation.I had only been gone a short while, and yet here he was again—falling for Isabella's words, ready to chase down some imagined lover. I was a dead woman—where would I even find a lover? After everything that had already happened, I was calmer this time. Only, the hatred in my heart toward Jameson and Isabella deepened even more. If the heavens ever gave me another chance, I would never let those two get away with it. Never."No wonder you said before that Mia must have sold off all those things for money—just to support some man on the side," Jameson muttered. His face had passed beyond mere anger into something almost grotesque.I looked at him coldly.'Jameson, what right do you have to despise me? Aren't you just as filthy, just as rotten?'Isabella pulled the car to a steady stop at Clinton Street. The window on the passenger side lowered with a quiet hum.Not far ahead, a street race was underway—t

"Yes… Yes… I… like it..."Jameson's movements grew rougher, almost violent, as if he was pouring every bit of resentment bottled up inside him into her body.He thought, 'Mia, don't blame me for betraying you since you have the nerve to betray me!'A cruel smile played on Jameson's lips. "Isabella, you look beautiful in high heels. From now on, only wear them for me, alright?""Mmm... okay..."Jameson's anger, fueled by betrayal, found its outlet in Isabella. The bathroom was filled with the sounds of breathless, feverish entanglement. But my attention stayed fixed on the heels.Jameson seemed to have a special fondness for high heels. I still remembered—the year I agreed to be with him, the first gift he gave me was a pair of red high heels.I had never worn them. I hated high heels. And yet, after my death, he'd given those same shoes to Isabella. She wore them now. In a moment like this.Who would have thought Jameson, who looked so polite and composed on the outside, hid
