Chapter 5

Author: Long Journey
Just when I was ready to tell Eliza the truth, it struck me—she had already blocked me.

She said I was too malicious, that she wanted nothing more to do with me.

So I had no choice but to seek her out in person. Yet on my way to find her, I was caught in a car accident and died instantly.

Looking back now, I realize it was all nothing but self-delusion.

In her eyes, Caleb was pure and untarnished. How could she ever believe he was the one who killed her mother?

The shrill ring of a phone snapped me from my thoughts.

Eliza, who had been sitting cold and impassive, glanced at the caller ID. A flicker of emotion crossed her face.

"Eliza, shall we go visit Mom's grave together tomorrow?"

"Okay. I'll come pick you up."

"Alright."

Then, after a pause, Caleb said, "And what about Gordon? Is he coming?"

Eliza's expression darkened at once. "He's dead."

The call ended. Without warning, she turned her car around.

I followed her all the way to the crematorium.

As Jude's car sped forward, the scenery outside the window was nothing but fleeting shadows.Jude's jaw was clenched, the corners of her mouth trembling. She was far too tense, her eyes fixed unblinkingly on the road ahead.I wanted to tell her she didn't need to drive so fast—that I wasn't in a hurry. As if hearing my thoughts, Jude eased her foot off the accelerator. She smiled faintly. "We're almost there, Gordon. Are you afraid?"There was something in her eyes I couldn't decipher.I shook my head. No.She smiled again, this time with relief. "Good. Don't be afraid. Gordon… in your next life, don't treat yourself so poorly."I froze for a moment, parted my lips, and mouthed silently: Alright. The car finally stopped by the sea.But Jude did not move. Her hands gripped the steering wheel, trembling. We both knew—once we stepped out, it would be a true farewell.I laid my hand over hers. She couldn't feel it, but I wanted to do it anyway.Jude smiled faintly. "Let's go."

The wedding hall erupted in chaos.I couldn't stop myself from looking toward the stage.A heartbeat later, the doors burst open and several police officers stormed in.Jude suddenly smiled. "Seems someone still has a shred of conscience left. Gordon, the show is about to begin."I watched her press a button. The massive screen that had once displayed wedding portraits now flickered, revealing surveillance footage. One clip showed my car accident.Another showed Caleb fleeing the Sutton family estate. At last, I understood what Jude's so-called grand gift was—she intended to expose Caleb's true face here and now.The wedding dissolved into an uproar of horrified whispers.Panic seized Caleb. He turned desperately to Eliza for protection. But she shoved him away, her gaze colder than frost, as if she were staring at filth."Caleb, did you really think your crimes could remain hidden forever? You killed my mother. You killed Gordon. You deserve to die."Caleb broke down, sho

The wedding I once longed for, Eliza gave in full—only not to me, but to Caleb. The gown, the rings, the invitations. She abandoned everything else—her company, her responsibilities—throwing herself entirely into preparations for her marriage to him.And yet, in that, there was a silver lining. It meant, perhaps, I could finally leave her. When she went on dates with him, I no longer found myself trailing behind. When they took wedding photos together, I stayed in the car, keeping a distance of miles between us.I tried not to follow her. I tried to pull away.To my surprise, I succeeded.I couldn't wait to run. I fled, far and fast, like a wandering ghost adrift on empty streets."Gordon."The sound of my name stopped me in my tracks. I turned lightly, almost weightlessly. In the dead of the night, under the streetlamp, Jude stood, holding a pack of beer. Her eyes welled up the instant she saw me."Gordon, it really is you."I had nearly forgotten. Jude could see me.She

Eliza froze in place, stunned. Jude seized the moment, yanking Eliza's head back by the hair."Ugh—"Rising from the floor, Jude towered over her, eyes cold with contempt."Now take your people and get out of my house."But Eliza shot to her feet instead, shoving Jude aside and charging straight into the study. The desk there was littered with photographs of me. In every single one, my face was drenched in blood, some so mutilated that my features were barely recognizable.I turned away after only a glance. I knew how terrible I had looked in death: one eye dislodged from its socket, a deep depression caved into the left side of my skull. Even the coroner had struggled to confirm my identity.Yet Jude had laid out those gruesome images openly across her desk, as though unafraid of the nightmares they must summon. Now those photographs lay in Eliza's hands. She studied them with an obsessive intensity, refusing to overlook even the smallest detail. Her grip bent one corner of a

Half a month passed before Eliza finally returned to our home. She shoved the door open with violent force, the sharp click of her heels echoing through the hall."Gordon, get out here!"One door after another she flung open, but still, she couldn't find a trace of me.Her already dark expression grew even stormier. While ordering her subordinates to track me down, she muttered under her breath, "Gordon, if you want to run, you'd better run far. Because when I catch you, I'll break your legs myself."But the man whose legs she threatened to break stood right before her eyes. Before long, one of her subordinates sent a location. Her expression twisted into something terrible. Puzzled, I glanced at the screen, only to see it was Jude Lawson's home."Ms. Sutton," a subordinate reported, "Mr. Ford's last call was to Jude Lawson. She claims she never saw him, but we suspect she kidnapped him."Eliza gave a cold laugh. "Kidnapped? Hah. More likely he went willingly. I'll be right th
