ALEXA

“Shall we go downstairs?” My dad asked me right after his statement about Clara.

He didn’t even give me the time to process what he just said or ask to know exactly what he meant by that statement.

“We are not done talking, dad,” I reminded him.

“I know, Alexa, but it is wrong to keep a guest waiting, especially one who is visiting for the first time; I taught you that before,” he told me.

Yes, he was right.

He had taught me that and a couple of other things that had actually helped in shaping my life, so I decided to listen to him.

“Agreed, but this conversation is not over,” I told him.

“It certainly isn’t, but for now, let’s go downstairs,” he urged.

That was when he walked up to me, but it was to open the door, which he did. As soon as we got to the hallway, I had a deep unsettling feeling in my chest.

“Dad?” I called him.

“Yes, dear,” he answered and turned to me.

I opened my mouth but no words came out. I wanted to tell him the sole reason Donald pressured me for this dinn

  • Till Divorce Do Us Part   The Verdict

ALEXAFinally, the dinner that seemed to be stretching for so long ended, much to my relief.“Alexa, honey, do you want to maybe join me in clearing the table?” Clara asked, getting back to her acting. She had been quiet for long, and that was majorly because the conversation had shifted from false pretenses and silly compliments to business talk. But she would not fool me with any of her acting.“That’s the job of the maids,” I stated as we all got up. “Didn’t they set the table?” I asked her.I wouldn’t have minded clearing the table. It wouldn’t have been a big deal. Besides, all the years I was married to Mark, I cleared the table every single time, but I wasn’t doing that with a woman who suddenly began to act nice because a wealthy man was coming home with me.I could bet that if Ivy was still here, she would have made an attempt to match them together. Wasn’t that what she did with Mark? She knew that I had liked him, and that my dad had wanted to introduce him to me, but she b

  • Till Divorce Do Us Part   Getting Acquainted

ALEXAI watched Mark leave, and still couldn’t tear my eyes away from the door until Donald held my hand and squeezed it gently.Affectionately.“Huh?” I said dumbly, turning to him as though he had said something to me.He smiled instead.“Down to earth, Alexa,” he said nicely.I shook my head to get rid of any form of distraction, and that was the exact moment my dad returned to the table.“Apologies for taking longer than necessary,” my dad said in a gentlemanly way.“It’s fine, Mr. Silver. Your wife and daughter have been good hosts,” Donald said.He was lying.Clara and I had an altercation while my dad was away and I lost concentration for a few minutes, but yet, he chose to lie.“Then, I am a lucky man,” my dad said with a smile.“And I am an even luckier man to be a part of this beautiful family,” Donald responded. I almost cringed at that.“I suppose your business with him went well?” Donald asked gently, in a way that didn’t say that he was prying, even though that was exac

  • Till Divorce Do Us Part   Flared Up

ALEXAWhat was Mark doing here?!I did see a file in his hand, and after leaving with my dad, it was obvious that he was here for business talk, so why was I unsettled?I wasn’t feeling unsettled because I had now come to hate Mark. Rather, I was feeling this way because he saw me with Donald, and I couldn’t explain why.I didn’t even look at him for the few minutes he stood in front of us. I couldn’t look at him, and I wanted him to leave as quickly as possible.“Alexa?” Donald called.I heard the sound of his voice somewhere far away in my head, because I was far gone in thought.“Yes?” I answered, turning to look at Donald.“Are you okay?” Donald asked charmingly.“Yes, I am fine,” I told him, but I wasn’t.“Are you sure?” He asked me.“Yes, I am,” I responded.“Alexa is used to feeling lost most of the time, so I think this is one of those times,” Clara said with a smile, but I heard the insult laced with those words. And I just couldn’t take it.I turned to her instantly.“Why wo

  • Till Divorce Do Us Part   Speak Or Stay Quiet?

MARKI felt like a stranger who had just walked into an intimate family get-together and ruined it, but I couldn’t just turn around and walk away even if it was what I wanted to do.“Mark,” Mr. Silver said, sounding slightly surprised to see me.“Donald, dear, would you like some more water?” Clara asked her guest sweetly. And this guest happened to be sitting right next to Alexa. They were the perfect picture of a couple who had come to visit her parents for dinner. If I had any idea that this was going on, I would not have bothered coming at all.“Not yet, Mrs. Silver,” Donald responded calmly. “Your food tastes delicious by the way, and thank you for having me,” Donald added nicely.I wasn’t dumb. I knew exactly what it was that they were doing. Clara was intentionally being petty. Ivy and I never worked out, and she wanted to show me what being welcomed into the family felt like. As for Donald, he had smirk on his face that seemed like only I could see.“You should sit and join us

  • Till Divorce Do Us Part   A Family Affair

MARKMy cell phone rang and when I saw that it was Brent, I quickly picked up.“Hey, Brent,” I said into the phone.“Can we meet up somewhere and talk?” Brent asked me.“Have you found something?” I asked him, curiosity taking control over me.“I would love a physical meeting if you are up to it,” Brent insisted.“I worked late today, so I am only just leaving the office right now, but I can meet you up before heading home,” I told him.“That’s great. I know a nice spot just along your route. I will send you an address,” Brent told me.“Okay, see you in a couple of minutes,” I said and ended the call.About five minutes ago, I had given my secretary the permission to close for the day. She shouldn’t be leaving before me, and she usually wouldn’t, but I felt like giving her that grace today. I had been soaked up with work, and I knew that I would be working late.I had even thought that I would stay later than this, but I wrapped up earlier than anticipated. Overall, it was a very prod
