I didn’t pay much attention to the subject growing up, but it was always described to us as something that happens after you’ve been marked. My mom told me it varies all the time, sometimes days, sometimes up to a year, but it drives a female mad with lust, unable to control who she lets mate with her.

It could even draw unmated males to her if her own mate is no where near, though it was meant to ensure an heir is produced, the heat lowering her inhibitions so that the mating process would be completed if for some reason it hadn't been, allowing the bond to take full effect. In the end, it essentially forced her hand into the bond and had always seemed barbaric to me, but it's why most Alpha's would mark their mates immediately regardless of consent.
