Estelle's POV

"Fine. If you won't answer, I'll answer for you."

I turned so everyone in the hall could hear me.

"You're scared because you already know I didn't touch that necklace," I said. "When we got here, Cassius carried that blue box into the house himself. It was closed. It was perfect. He never let it out of his hand."

Cassius's fingers tightened around the box.

"Then he went upstairs and gave it to Delilah before the party," I went on. "And suddenly, like magic, the chain is broken and the diamond is gone. The moment it touched her hands."

I let that hang in the air.

"I think everybody here can do the math."

Whispers rolled across the room. A few guests who had been heading for the door stopped and turned back around.

"So the problem isn't the video," I said, looking straight at my family. "The problem is that you're scared to watch it. Because deep down, you know Delilah broke her own necklace. And you just want me to take the blame for her. Again."

Then I looked at Delilah.

"Isn't that right, Delilah?"

Delilah pressed herself closer to our mother. She didn't say a word. She just shook her head over and over, tears sliding down her cheeks.

My mother stepped forward with her hands raised, like she was trying to calm a wild animal.

"Estelle, please," she begged. "Delilah would never do something like that. And you... you're both my daughters. My two beloved girls. I can't stand to see either of you suffer. Please, let's stop this."

My two beloved girls.

Something inside me snapped.

"Stop," I said. "Just stop."

My mother froze.

"Three years ago, I might have believed that," I said. "Three years ago, I would have cried and thanked you for saying it. I wanted to hear those words so badly."

I took a step toward her.

"But after what you did to me? After you deleted the only proof that I was innocent? After you sent me to that convent to be beaten and starved, and never came to see me even once?" My voice broke, but I kept going. "Hearing you stand here and lie to my face like that... it makes me sick."

My mother's face crumpled. She put her hand over her mouth.

I looked at my father. At Cassius. At Delilah. Then back at my mother.

"You know what? I'll give you exactly what you want."

I reached up and pulled the piece of string out of my hair. It was the only thing I had brought from the convent. I dropped it on the marble floor between us.

"As of tonight, I am no longer a Silverthorn," I said. "I give up your name. I give up every right that comes with it. Your money, your house, your inheritance. I don't want any of it."

Gasps filled the hall.

"I'm done playing your games," I said. "I'm done being part of this family."

"No!" my mother cried. She lunged for my hand, but I stepped back. "No, Estelle, you can't! You don't mean that!"

"I've never meant anything more in my life."

I turned around and walked toward the front doors. My back burned with every step. Blood dripped onto the floor behind me, a little red trail across the white marble.

Nobody stopped me this time.

Just before I reached the doors, I heard Cassius's voice behind me. It wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It was quiet and shaky, like he was talking to himself.

"Have I..." He swallowed hard. "Have I been wrong about her this whole time?"

I didn't turn around.

He would have to answer that question on his own.

Estelle's POV"Master Cassius? Shouldn't you be inside at the party?"Aunt Ruth stepped in front of me as Cassius came running up to the back gate. But he didn't even look at her."Stop right there, Estelle."I kept walking."Are you deaf?" he shouted. "I said stop! Where do you think you're going?"He grabbed my arm and yanked me back through the gate."Let go of me.""It's always something with you, isn't it?" His fingers squeezed tighter. "First you turn Delilah's birthday into a circus, and now you're trying to sneak out the back gate in the middle of the night like a thief? Stop acting like a child and get back inside.""I'm never going back in there.""Careful, Master Cassius!" Aunt Ruth cried. "Her back! She's hurt!"But Cassius only pulled harder."Come on," he said, and his voice changed a little. It wasn't as hard anymore. "You can't go out alone this late. It's dark. It's not safe out there.""Just let go of me!"I twisted my arm, trying to pull free. He grabbed my other sh

Estelle's POV"You think I wanted this?"I turned back around to face Cassius. My whole body was shaking now."You think I wanted to bleed all over my grandmother's dress? In front of all these people? Just so you could shout at me and call me a liar?" I shook my head slowly. "Do you really think I have so little respect for myself?"Cassius opened his mouth. Nothing came out. His eyes kept going back to the red stain on my dress."Estelle..." My mother's voice trembled. "Sweetheart, what happened to your back? Who did this to you?""Ask the convent you sent me to," I said. Her face went white. But before she could say another word, Delilah pushed herself up from the floor, holding her arm, and limped toward me."Estelle, does it hurt very much?" Her voice was soft and sweet like honey. Tears shone in her eyes. "Oh, I'm so, so sorry. I didn't mean it. I was just having a terrible day, that's all. Someone ruined the birthday gift Cassius got for me, and I was so upset I couldn't think

Estelle's POV"Mom! Mom, it hurts so much! Ow!"Delilah lay on the marble floor at the bottom of the staircase, crying like a little child. Her tiara had slipped sideways in her hair. Her pink gown was spread around her like flower petals. And I was lying right beside her.It happened so fast. One second, my mother was holding my wrist by the front doors. The next, Delilah came tumbling down the last steps, and instead of rolling to the floor, she twisted her body and crashed straight into me. Her shoulder hit me hard. I flew backward and landed flat on my back on the cold marble.Pain exploded across my skin. White, hot, burning pain. Every cut Sister Agatha had given me this morning tore open at once.I bit down on my lip so I wouldn't scream."Oh, my baby! My poor baby!" My mother dropped to her knees beside Delilah and pulled her into her arms. She didn't even look at me. "Where does it hurt? Do you have a boo-boo? Show Mommy.""My ankle," Delilah sobbed. "And my arm. It hurts so

Estelle's POV"Stop lying!"Cassius's voice cracked across the hall like a whip. He stepped between me and our mother before she could answer Dad's question."I know you're angry because we ignored you," he said, pointing his finger in my face. "But if you had a problem, it was your job to tell us. Not to keep quiet for years and then explode in front of the whole city!""Cassius..." my mother whispered."No, Mom. Somebody has to say it." He turned back to me. "You're jealous. That's all this is. You're jealous that Delilah had a better life than you. That's why you bullied her before, and that's why you're trying to throw all the blame on her now."I didn't say anything. I just watched him."Did you ever stop for one second and think about doing the right thing?" he shouted. "No! You just keep punishing us for your own bad luck. You are the worst person I have ever met.""Cassius, don't talk about your sister like that," my mother said, reaching for his arm.He shook her off."Mom, s
