Chapter 1

My name was Megan Locke, and I was at the mall with my best friend, Millie Carter.

"Come on, babe, enough with the long face." Millie took my hand and dragged me toward the changing room before shoving me inside. "Here, pick out a new outfit that actually suits you. Maybe it'll bring you some better luck."

She handed me a long, red dress. Seeing as she wasn't taking no for an answer, I had no choice but to take it.

When I finally emerged, Millie clapped a hand over her mouth and exclaimed, "Wow! It's like the dress was made for you!"

It was a simple maroon knitted dress, yet the soft material hugged my body like a second skin, accentuating every curve. The low-cut neckline perfectly displayed the elegant lines of my neck and collarbone, though it stopped just shy of being indecent.

"You're definitely getting that."

With that said, Millie handed her card to the cashier before hooking her arm through mine. "Megs, that ex-boyfriend of yours must have been blind. Then again, breaking up is the best thing that could've happened to you. You deserve so much better."

Millie didn't waste any time; she dragged me straight to a private club specifically for she-wolves.

I downed a mojito, the liquid burning a trail straight down my throat. As someone who didn't drink, this was already incredibly strong to me. Nonetheless, neither the flashing lights nor the alcohol could dim the glaring light of my phone screen.

I stared down at my ex-boyfriend, Jason Moore's latest Instagram update. It was a photo of him and his new girlfriend on the beach with the caption, "New beginnings." They both wore matching, silly grins.

It was a stark contrast to his time with me. When we were dating, he was cold and indifferent—almost like a dead fish, with no passion to speak of.

"Stop looking at trash, Megs." Millie leaned over, pressing her red lips against my ear. "There are still plenty of good wolves out there. No point in being hung up and crying over that one wolf."

"See that?" my clearly drunk best friend yelled over the music, pointing at the wolves dancing on the stage. "Even here, not a single one of them is inferior to Jason!"

On the stage, the dancers were gyrating their hips, the zippers of their pants tugged low enough to reveal dark blue underwear and the massive bulges beneath. As I watched, a she-wolf shoved a stack of bills into one of the dancer's waistbands.

My mind screamed in protest, but the haze of alcohol only magnified my resentment. I had a great figure, and I was beautiful! So why was I the one who got dumped?

"Another mojito," I called out.

The pale yellow liquid slid down my throat like a warm current, and the edges of my vision began to blur.

"Megs, wait here for me, okay? I'm going to dance for a bit." Hopping off her barstool, Millie squeezed her way onto the dancefloor as the music cranked louder.

It wasn't long before a wolf took her seat. The collar of his white dress shirt was open, and he had deliberately left several buttons undone to reveal his pectorals.

"That drink won't be enough to drown your sorrows, gorgeous." He waved at the bartender. "Give the lady a whiskey."

His gaze swept across my neck and chest with a lecherous gleam. Normally, I would have detested such a look; it made me feel violated. However, Jason's hateful face abruptly popped into my mind, and a rebellious impulse surged through me, fueled by the alcohol.

To hell with propriety. To hell with restraint.

Meeting the stranger's eyes, I lifted my chin and thrust my chest forward. My tone was challenging. "Are you trying to hit on me?"

He smiled, revealing cigarette-stained teeth, and shifted closer. "No need to be so blunt. I just saw you drinking all by yourself and thought you could use some company."

Pushing the glass of amber whiskey toward me, he added, "My treat. An alluring lady like you shouldn't be bothered by worries."

After saying that, he leaned even closer, bringing the sharp angles of his face into focus. His breath puffed against my face, smelling distinctly of cigarette smoke.

That glass of whiskey seared through me like fire, and everything afterward seemed to be draped in a hazy fog.

All I remembered was the pounding music and the sting of the spirits as he held a hand out to me in an inviting gesture. "Miss, it's a beautiful night. How about you and I go have some fun together?"

"You—""Think of it as business, sweetheart. 50,000 gold coins for each of them. I don't do deals that lose me money." Woody crowded closer, pulling me onto his lap. His palms slid up my thighs. "Besides, if we count the other night, you're still getting the better end of the deal here."My mind whirred. The situation was spiraling faster than I had anticipated. Ah, damn it!"No!" I couldn't stop myself from trembling, so I leaned into it, playing the part of the terrified victim. I hooked my arms around his neck. "You know I can't… I don't even know them."His hands wandered across my waist, but he remained silent. Seeing he had no intention of speaking up, I pressed my face into his chest, fighting the instinctive urge to gag. I drew slow, shaky circles on his chest with a finger. "Do you think you could—""Nope," he cut me off, leaning down to inhale the jasmine scent I'd sprayed in my hair. "Relax. Very soon, you'll be enjoying pleasure like you've never known. Once you ge

"You only need 5,000 gold coins to get your photos back. Isn't that a steal?" Woody finally cast aside all pretenses, the predatory look on his face making me feel like prey. "I'll be waiting for your answer. If you don't show up on Saturday night, I promise those photos will be uploaded all over the internet that same night."Before I could refuse, Woody downed his drink in one gulp and walked out. Afterward, I recounted every detail of the meeting to Aiden and Millie. Millie immediately insisted on going in my place, but I wouldn't hear of it. I couldn't let her pay the price for my mistake. "Who the hell pays blackmail money at a hotel?" Millie roared furiously. "This is clearly a trap! Maybe we should just borrow the 200,000 gold coins and be done with it."Aiden stepped in. "Millie, don't be naive. You know that even if Megan pays 200,000 gold coins, someone like that will never let her go." Then, he handed me a ring. "This is a special ring for self-defense. I went back to that underground club.Like before, handsome wolves were dancing on the stage, but I wasn't in the mood to enjoy the show this time.My phone weighed heavily in my pocket, a constant reminder of the message I'd received yesterday from an unknown number. The mysterious sender had sent a shocking photo of me. I was barely clothed, lying on a bed with unfocused, glazed eyes. Beneath it was a chilling command. "Tomorrow night, eleven o'clock, at the place we first met. Come alone, or I won't mind sharing these."The moment I'd read those words, it felt as though a cold snake had crawled up my spine and coiled tightly around my throat. The sensation was suffocating. The noisy, thumping environment of the club made me restless. I could hardly think straight; my mind was a chaotic mess. "Hello, beautiful. I'm so delighted you came."The familiar voice rang out behind me. It was him—Woody. He calmly took the seat across from me. Despite the dim lighting, I could fe

By the time the police finished questioning me, it was already four in the afternoon."Ms. Locke," a voice called out behind me.I turned to see one of the officers who had been in the room—a young wolf who had been quietly recording my statement. He had changed out of his uniform and into a plain gray hoodie and dark pants. His dark brown hair fell casually across his forehead, and without the stern professionalism of his badge, he looked like a freshly graduated university student. He was exactly my type, but I was so drained that all I wanted to do was go home and sleep. "Hi, I'm Aiden Carter. Millie has to attend a meeting, so she told me to see you home."After that brief introduction of himself, he led me toward the parking lot. It wasn't until I sank into the seat of his unassuming gray sedan that true exhaustion washed over me. Outside the window, the city's night scenery passed by in a blur of kaleidoscopic colors. However, instead of taking me straight home, Aiden

The shrill ringing of my phone abruptly pierced the haze clouding my mind, snapping me back to my senses."No!"I suddenly realized I couldn't go through with this. I couldn't sleep with a stranger—an unfamiliar wolf I didn't love. I shoved him away from me, causing him to stumble back and crash against the wall."Are you dissatisfied with my service?" He had already unzipped his pants, revealing a wolf-claw tattoo near his crotch and a prominent, heavy bulge. "I don't need that kind of service." Struggling to pull my heavy, sluggish body up, I scrambled for my clothes and yanked them on. "Please leave.""Sweetheart, putting on a strong front now won't end well for you." He stepped toward me, seizing my wrist with a shocking amount of force. "I wasted a lot of effort and energy on you. You've got to at least let me have my fun too, right?""Let me go!"With a loud crack, I landed a harsh slap across his cheek.A dark expression crossed his face, momentarily overlapping with th

The wolf's hands left my body as he moved to a nearby cabinet and produced a gray candle. The moment he lit it, a sweet smell immediately masked the scent of the massage oil.I instinctively furrowed my brow."This candle is made from a special ingredient found only in the southern swamps," he explained. His voice rumbled right above my head, steady and almost hypnotic. "It's meant to soothe the mind and relax the senses. "I'll combine it with a new massage technique. Soon, you'll be feeling so good that you'll forget every worry you've ever had."I didn't respond to his words. Whether it was the alcohol or the candle, my entire body felt loose and limp, as though my bones had turned to jelly. My mind felt like it was drifting through a thick, heavy fog. He pressed close to my hips, and I could feel the sweltering heat radiating from his abs. I squirmed, trying to shift away from the scalding heat, but the friction only caused the wolf behind me to let out a low groan and a mu
