I look down on at my phone as I end another phone call to my girlfriend, which once again goes unanswered again.
Why won’t she pick up her phone or reply to my messages? I still don’t understand what I’ve done wrong.
With my phone still in my hand, I let my hand drop to my side as I look out across the city landscape. The air lightly blowing past me, ruffling my hair as storm clouds dot the horizon.
I have another story to write, but I can’t get my mind to think straight. For the first time since taking my job at The Glassbrook Times, I have asked for someone else to take the story and for a few days off.
The building storm in the distance is almost a perfect metaphor for my life right now. I’m standing off in the distance watching the clouds build and expand, while I’m helpless to do anything or to protect anyone in the path.
I take a deep breath as my mind continues to wonder what could be happening

I scan the airstrip, trying to see if there is anything wrong. I don’t like this and the fact that we had to move the meeting and departure time up doesn’t sit well with me. With a stern look, I head back inside the hanger where a large array of bodyguards and staff are. I double check the list of approved people and those standing inside the hanger. They all seem to be accounted for, and no additional individuals. However, no matter how many times I check and double check everything, I have this uneasy feeling that I’m missing something. I can’t put my finger on it, but there is something. I’m just hoping that I can find out what it is before it is too late. Through my earpiece, Charles barks, “Get everything loaded onto the plane. We are going to run out of time before the Prince gets here, so hurry.” I glance around the hanger as our staff loads several black boxes and briefcases, which
With a smile on my face, I watch Deloris turn and follow behind the royal family. My worries have melted away as soon as I see her smile. With my focus still on my girlfriend, my mother leans towards me and nudges my arm. “Are you going to talk to her as soon as the plane leaves? All this nonsense between you two has to stop.”I nod. “Yes. I’m going to talk to her and promise to never let anything like this happen again.”My mother stands back upright and chimes, “Good.”Not too far from us, the Queen glances over her shoulder with a faint smile on her lips. “I’m also glad to hear that. Otherwise, I was going to have to knock some sense into that girl.”However, I don’t acknowledge the Queen. Instead, I walk towards the hanger as Deloris runs across the pavement towards the plane. With her arm waving wildly in the air
I pace back and forth in the private hospital’s hallway as medical staff runs back and forth.I want to stop someone and find out what is going on with Deloris, but I don’t.As I turn back in the other direction, my mother’s cracked voice breaks through my thoughts and the endless questions swirling around in my mind. “Shane, sit down. You are going to wear a hole in the floor if you keep going.”I don’t think I can sit even if I want to. My anxiety builds just thinking about having to stay still for a minute.I take a deep breath and stop. As I turn towards my mother and the Queen, I shake my head. My voice sounds as rough as I feel. “I don’t think I can. I think it is better for me to keep pacing.”As my mother goes to open her mouth, Charles comes running down the hall. “How is she? Did she make it out of surgery yet?&rdq
I march into Dee’s office with Page, Max and Trevor following close behind. As I storm around the desk, Trevor quietly shuts the door. When I hear the door click shut, I let all of my emotions go. “WHAT THE HELL WAS ALL THAT? HOW DID A BOMB GET PLACED WITH ALL THE OTHER BOXES AND BAGS FOR THE TRIP?”I push Dee’s chair out of the way and lean forward with my hands resting on top of her desk.I stare at each person one by one, however, none of them reply, until my eyes stop on Trevor. He gulps and pushes his glasses up his nose before he glances sideways at the other two.He reluctantly turns his attention back to me and gulps again, while I’m shooting daggers at him with my eyes. He tentatively says, “I haven’t had a chance to review all the video. The team is still working on that. So, we haven’t come to the point where the extra case makes its way into th
I gently lift Deloris’ hand into mine and lovingly gaze at her bandaged face while I sit beside her hospital bed. My heart aches seeing her in this condition. She looks so peaceful, and I know she needs to rest, but I can’t help but to be a little selfish. I want her to open those beautiful brown eyes and look at me. Tell me she won’t ever scare me like she has.I don’t think I could handle another day like that day.Looking back, I’m glad that I had my attention on Deloris, even though a part of heart was ripped from my body when her body went soaring through the air.My thumb gently rubs circles on the back of her hand while I continue to stare at her.The Queen silently doing something similar to the King not far away.I lean forward and caress the side of side of her face, before I stand and gently kiss her forehead. The whole time I’m silently praying th
With my fingers hovering over my laptop, I glance across the room at Deloris, who is still lying motionless on the bed. Then my eyes drift over the King, who is in the same state as my girlfriend.I know I need to write a press release for the Queen, but I can’t help to keep throwing my feelings into the articles, too. I still haven’t finished an article yet, and I’m running out of time. Charles and the Queen have given me a deadline, but I keep holding myself back.My focus turns back to Deloris, as a slight pain tugs at my heart. When will she wake up?I shift my attention back to my notes beside my laptop. I guess I will start with the worst-case scenario, which at this point may be the most likely one to use.I scan through everything regarding Charles taking the throne and being crowned the next king. I take a deep breath and begin typing. It doesn’t take long
No. This shouldn’t have happened like this. I look at the Queen and Uncle Charles as a wave of panic washes over me. My heart races and thunders within my chest, while my breathing becomes quick and shallow. Loud voices swirl around me, but I pay attention to what they are saying. As my eyes roll back into my head, the one voice that pulls me back from the darkness is Shane’s deep, frantic voice. “Deloris! Baby, stay with me! Please, I can’t handle not having you here with me.” My heart aches with the amount of pain he has woven through each syllable. I try to take a steady breath as I whisper, “Shane.” The darkness that was closing in on me just moments ago slowly fades away and once again, I’m looking at my handsome boyfriend while his warm hand grasps mine. His warmth comforts me and with my eyes locked with his, I ignore the other people in the room as they scurry around the bed.&
I lay back on my bed and stare up at the white ceiling. How could this all happen while I’m unconscious? Shane caresses my cheek as he softly asks, “Hey, baby. What are you thinking about?” I slowly shake my head. “I can’t believe with all our top agents that we can’t find the person responsible for this. We can’t even find your friend, Chris. How can we be lacking so much? Or is it that the mastermind behind this whole thing has too much power and stops us when we don’t even realize it?” I pull my focus off the ceiling and turn my attention towards my boyfriend. A slight frown now adorns his face. He sighs and slides his hand down off my cheek and rests it on my arm. “I’m helping Charles by giving him all the information I know about Chris and where he might be hiding. It is only a matter of time now. They will find my friend. However, I still don’t think that my fr
