Iris’s POV

I could feel the eyes of the pack members following me as I dragged myself up the steps, with my hair plastered to my sweaty face, my clothes sticking to my skin, and one hand cradled against my chest.

I could hear the whispers.

“Is that her?”

“The girl Alpha Rowan saved?”

“I thought she was a rumor.”

“She looks… rough.”

“Oh goodness, the poor thing.”

Fantastic. My first impression to half the pack was me looking like I had just wrestled a bear.

I wanted to shout. ‘This is not my fault! Blame Rowan! Or Lucas!

But all I could do was keep climbing.

One woman carrying a basket of laundry actually stopped walking. She glanced at my swollen hand, then at my sweating face, and smiled.

“Rough morning?” she asked, with a warm smile.

I forced a weak smile. “You could say that.”

Someone else snorted. “Guess the rumors were true. Rowan’s pet project is a mess.”

My face burned hotter than it already was.

This was the first time that any pack member had actually seen me, aside from the

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 261

Iris’s POVThe boat ride felt like it took forever. When we finally reached the other shore, it was morning.Maximus lifted me out of the boat without a word and carried me into another forest. He walked for what felt like hours. The paralysis continued to fade slowly, but it was not fast enough. I could move my fingers, and flex my toes. But my arms and legs were still mostly useless. I hated it.The forest eventually changed to desert. The ground changed from soft earth to sand.We had reached some kind of desert area. There were no trees, no signs of life. Just empty, barren land stretching in every direction.Where the hell were we?Maximus finally stopped walking and set me down on the ground. My body was still too weak to run, so I just lay there, trying to gather my strength.I heard an engine in the distance getting closer.Within minutes, a black car pulled up beside us, and two men got out.One of them immediately came over to me and grabbed my arms, dragging me roughly to m

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 260

Rowan’s POVI didn’t back down. I didn’t lower my eyes. I stared directly at the King, my own aura flaring to match his.“I will get my mate back,” I growled. My voice was low and deadly calm now. “One way or another. With or without your permission.”The room went deathly silent. Shane, Marcus, and Derek all tensed behind me, clearly ready to move if things went badly.Silas’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Are you threatening to defy my direct order?”“I’m stating a fact,” I replied coldly. “Iris is my mate. My responsibility. My everything. If you won’t help me get her back, then I’ll do it myself.”Silas bristled at my tone. His jaw clenched tight as anger flashed across his face.“Guards!” he called out sharply.Several palace guards immediately entered the study, their hands on their weapons.“If Alpha Rowan will not comply with my orders,” Silas commanded, his voice hard, “then he is to be detained until further notice. Lock him in the guest quarters under guard. He is not to leav

Rowan’s POVI stepped back, staring at him. The scar was the clue.“Shane,” I said quietly. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”Shane clenched his jaw, nodding. “He was my number one suspect”I gritted my teeth. “This just confirms it. Alpha Maximus took Iris.”Of course. It made perfect sense. I wasn’t surprised. Maximus had more than enough motives.“He supposedly left yesterday,” Marcus pointed out. “Everyone saw him leave.”“Then everyone was fooled,” I said. “He never actually left. Or he came back somehow. Either way, he has Iris.”“We need proof,” Derek said. “We can’t accuse an Alpha of kidnapping without solid evidence.”“We have proof,” I said, pointing at the unconscious Cole. “He just gave us the clue we needed.”“A clue isn’t proof,” Marcus argued. “Maximus will deny everything. And he has witnesses who saw him leave.”“Then we make him admit it,” I growled. “We go to his territory. We tear it apart until we find her.”“That would be an act of war,” Derek said carefully

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 258

Rowan’s POVThe guards dragged Cole down to the palace dungeons. I followed close behind with my hands clenched into fists. Shane, Marcus, and Derek came with me. King Silas had ordered a healer to wait outside in case things went too far.The dungeon was cold and wet. Water dripped from the walls. The smell of rot and blood filled the air. Perfect. They threw Cole into a cell and chained his wrists to hooks that were hanging from the ceiling. His arms were stretched above his head, and his feet were barely touching the ground.“Please,” Cole begged, his voice shaking. “I already told you everything I saw. I don’t know anything else.”“You’re lying,” I said, walking slowly toward him. “And I’m going to prove it.”I started simple. A punch to his stomach. It was not hard enough to break anything, but it was just enough to hurt.Cole gasped as the air was knocked out of his lungs.“Who took her?” I demanded.“I don’t know!” Cole wheezed. “I swear I don’t know!”My wolf growled in my hea

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 257

Rowan's POV I reached the tunnel entrance and searched for the hidden trigger to open it from the outside. It took me a few minutes, but I finally found the switch and the wall opened up again.I climbed back into the tunnel and started running back toward the palace.“Hold on, Iris,” I muttered as I ran. “Just hold on a little longer. I’m coming for you. I swear I’m coming for you.”The tunnel seemed even longer on the way back. Every second felt like an eternity. But in reality, it took a much shorter time as this time, I didn’t hesitate. I followed my own scent straight back the way I had come. Finally, I reached the opening back into the palace restroom.I climbed up the ladder quickly and pulled myself through the trap door.Shane was still there, along with several of the King’s guards. They all turned toward me immediately when I emerged.“Alpha Rowan!” Shane said, rushing over. “Did you find anything?”“She was taken through the tunnels,” I said quickly. “They crossed a lake.

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 256

Rowan’s POVMy elbow hit something as I pulled back from the wall, and suddenly I heard a soft click. The tiny hole of light expanded as the wall began to open up.I stepped through quickly before it could close again.Fresh air hit me immediately. I was outside now, standing in a dense forest. The moon provided enough light for me to see clearly.Behind me, the opening began to close quietly. Within seconds, the exit narrowed until it was completely invisible.I spun around, using all my enhanced senses to search for any sign of Iris or her kidnapper. But there was nothing. There was no scent. No footprints near the tunnel exit. No disturbed vegetation, nothing. It was like no one had passed through here at all.I ran a hand through my hair in frustration. What if I was wrong? What if this tunnel was just some random ancient passage that had nothing to do with Iris’s kidnapping? What if Cole’s story was actually true and I had wasted precious time chasing nothing?I gritted my teeth,
