Birth control pills?
Violet leaned against the door, her heart breaking into pieces.
What was happening?
Was her mind tricking her, making her imagine her husband's voice?
Clyde would never-
The shock froze her, and she stood rooted on the same spot, her ears picking up the rest of their conversation.
“Quit joking, Clyde…” Cora said, her voice playful. “You and Violet are married. Why would you want a baby with me?”
“Marrying Violet wasn't my choice,” Clyde grunted as if merely mentioning her name disgusted him. “If she hadn't interfered, you'd be Mrs. Crawford instead of her.”
“Clyde, but your family likes Violet.”
“That’s because she fooled my grandfather!” Clyde's voice turned darker. “She’s a gold digger. I'm only waiting for the perfect opportunity to chase her out!”
Each word sliced through Violet's heart.
Her shoulders trembled and her tears flowed like a dam.
How funny.
Clyde never loved her!
How did he conceal this hate so perfectly?
A gold-digger.
He was the one who took her to his family.
Three years ago, she was no one in this country.
Yet, Clyde never bothered about her origins.
He told her as long as she could cure his grandfather's broken leg, he'd be forever indebted.
He said he fell for her at first sight and couldn't wait to spend the rest of his life with her!
Why?
Why did he lie to her?
Violet crumbled the pregnancy test results in her hands, the ache spreading across her chest, rendering her heart weak.
As the sounds of her husband making love to another woman echoed through the office door, the promises he'd made her resounded in her mind.
'I'll love you forever.’
'You're the most perfect woman, Violet.'
'Believe me, I'll look at no other woman.’
'When our baby arrives, Violet… I'll announce it to the whole world.’
Ridiculous!
Clyde only planned to destroy her womb.
Didn't he care about the effect those birth control pills would have on her?
What if Violet died?
Would he ever care?
Violet considered barging in there to catch them red-handed.
Could she stand the disgusting sight, however?
Their moans alone made her want to vomit.
Violet wiped her tears and walked away.
She'd run from the trap of an arranged marriage, not knowing she was running straight into the monster's den.
Clyde had fooled her for a long time.
What if she never ran from her family?
Every hardship of the arranged marriage would be worth it compared to this deep betrayal.
She came to this country under the pretense of studying and met the love of her life.
Violet thought her story would be different from her mother's, but hers was even worse.
At least, her mother had a shoulder to cry on when her father broke her.
Her uncle, Liam, and his wife were there to stand for her.
But Violet was the rebellious daughter who thought she could forge her own happiness.
Was this her repercussion?
She came out of the elevator, her head lowered, her hair covering half of her face.
At least, the employees wouldn't notice that she was crying.
If only it would also conceal the air of gloom surrounding her.
Her once energetic footsteps were now reduced to a sluggish trail.
Surely, the employees could sense something was wrong,
And they didn't mind gossiping about it.
“Why does Mrs. Crawford look sad?”
“Minutes ago, she was literally jumping in happiness.”
“Wait a minute… Do you think she found out?”
“Hey, don't say it-”
“But I think she just did!”
Found out?
About what?
Clyde's relationship with his secretary, Cora?
Violet laughed inside, her fingers balling into fists.
The whole world must already know about Clyde's relationship with his secretary.
She was the only one left in the dark.
The oblivious wife who kept a happy smile on her face every day.
When she reached the car, the driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror, frowning this time.
“Mrs. Crawford, you're crying too much. I hope everything's alright. Didn't you see Mr. Crawford?”
Violet sniffled, using a hankie to dab her puffy eyes. “Please take me to the judiciary.”
“Huh?” The worry in the driver's eyes increased.
But he didn't say anything as he started the car.
Shutting her eyes, Violet cuddled her abdomen, the betrayal cutting deep into her veins.
She'd never grieved this much before. Not even when her parents proposed that arranged marriage.
Was this what they called a heartbreak?
In an effort to ignore the heartache, Violet strived to focus on the life growing inside her.
Despite Clyde's efforts, she fell pregnant.
Wasn't it a miracle?
“We'll be fine, Baby.” Resting back on the seat, She sighed. “He doesn't need us. We don't need him.”
…At Crawford Mansion.Clyde was himself again despite the chaos going on around him. After Violet confessed everything- things he never knew existed- he somehow felt relieved. He felt so relieved that she no longer had any doubts. He was very relieved that she was no longer leaving him. He held her hand while the other hand was on the steering wheel. As he drove the car inside the mansion, he was neither anxious nor wary.He wasn't afraid that his grandfather had summoned him again. He wasn't a bit scared that the old man might pass the worse judgment. “Can you at least act as if you're in a bad mood?” Violet threw him a helpless look. “If you smile like this at Grandpa, his anger might worsen.”“I can act.” Clyde shrugged. He pulled over at the parking lot and they left the car.“Are you sure?” Violet didn't believe him. “You’re not a great actor, you know.”“Says who?” Clyde pulled her in for a kiss.Violet's eyes widened. She struggled to break free but he overpowered her.“Hey
At The Hospital Inside the VIP Ward, Asher sat on the chair by the bed, staring at her solemn expression as she slept soundly. An inexplicable guilt hit him, and he couldn't help but reminisce about the past.Freya was actually right. He, indeed, took advantage of her.He could have controlled himself, yet he didn't.Several times he’d broken his own vows to himself. He'd lost control again and again as if he was never aware of his own body.Even at the rooftop, he'd initiated that kiss.Asher didn't know what had come over him.A gentle peck of reassurance suddenly turned into a wild fiery kiss, and that was when Violet and Freya barged in.Damn! Was luck never by his side? How strange it was that he never regretted his action. How funny was it that he was more worried about her health.Moments later, she shifted on the bed, dragging his attention.Asher reached out and stroked her away, pulling some strands out of her eyes.As she fluttered them open, he was lost in a pool of vulne
After Asher’s outburst, a deadly silence descended.Violet’s lips parted in shock, yet, not a single word left her mouth. As if caught red-handed committing a bad act, she sunk her head in shame.Memories of her and Clyde in intimate positions flashed through her mind.Memories of him touching her, and memories of her responding to his touch. She lifted her head and faced him.Staring into his eyes, she saw the hurt. She felt it.Violet didn't see it coming. She never expected Asher to know- she never thought that he’d think about such things. But his statement wasn’t a lie, which made matters worse.Which was why even as he stared at her with questions in his eyes, seeking clarification, she couldn't defend herself.Of course, she'd been selfish in this relationship and had no right to blame him.“Let’s go.” She took Freya’s hand. This time, Freya didn't protest. She was eerily quiet, her expression sad and regretful. Outside the hospital, Violet took in a long drag of the fresh ai
How strange was it that the shock didn't make Violet unconscious.Maybe it was because she saw it coming and Freya had already told her about Tasha. But Tasha wouldn't have seen it coming. The shock of seeing someone so similar to you was definitely unbearable.Asher rushed her to the hospital, and as they stood outside the emergency room, Violet couldn't contain her sadness. Her anger was no more. She only now felt regretful.Maybe they shouldn't have barged in on them that way.Although Asher’s way of handling things was strange and uncalled for, if they knew something like this would happen, they would have alerted him first before meeting Tasha.Ever since they arrived at the hospital, Asher looked disoriented. His eyes were fixed on the emergency room’s door and, now and then, he paced back and forth. Why did he look so scared and worried? Is it because of Violet’s appearance?Or was he afraid something bad had happened to Tasha? She only fainted, right?“Cool down, Ash,” Freya br
Violet never expected the location to be so far.Twilight Hotel was located in the center of the city, and the ride took almost thirty minutes.By then, her nerves were already tense, anticipation making her tap her feet rapidly on the floor.Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath to calm down.“It’s okay, Vi. Relax.” Freya touched her shoulder, giving her a reassuring rub.Violet returned the gesture with a smile. They left the car and entered the enormous hotel. Asher didn't tell Freya what room they were in. Bringing out her phone, Freya dialed his number and communicated with him as they passed by the security. While Freya spoke with him, Violet glanced around the place.“No. I'm alone,” Freya said.“It’s not something that can be said on the phone,” she added after a few seconds’ pause.“Damnit! Ash! I'm already at the hotel, just tell me where you are!”Freya finally hung up, looking displeased. She made a funny face at her phone and shoved it inside her pocket.“Urgh! He's
A twin?Who?Violet could believe Freya was only bluffing if only her best friend hadn't looked deadly serious. She even told her Asher was in town. She told her so many things that she couldn't grasp a single statement.“Listen to me, Violet!” Even an hour later, Freya was still persistent in convincing her. “It's not like I don't trust Asher. But I have a bad feeling about all this. He found the exact replica of you and called her his wife- that's absurd, Asher vowed he'd love you forever!”Asher’s love for her wasn't the thing that mattered the most. The idea that she had a lost twin out there was what scared Violet. How?And when?As far as she could remember, she neither had any sister nor siblings. She was the only child her parents had. Her parents divorced while she was young, but her father wouldn't have a daughter who was the same age as her and also looked exactly like her.Violet thought she looked more like her mother. She'd inherited most of her physical features.“You s
