Callie's POV

Mason came on the third day.

I heard him before I saw him. His voice was in the hallway, sharp and impatient, telling someone on the phone that he didn't have time for this and that the meeting would have to wait. Then the door opened, and my husband walked into my hospital room for the first time since the crash.

He looked perfect. Fresh dark suit, clean shave, and hair combed back the way he liked it. If I didn't know better, I would have thought he had spent the last three days resting at a spa. The only sign that anything had happened was the white tape wrapped around his fingers, where the metal had cut him while he was saving her.

He stopped at the end of my bed and looked at me. His eyes moved over the cast on my leg, the stitches on my forehead, and the bruises on my arms. I waited for something to change in his face. Guilt, or shock, or even a little bit of pain.

Nothing changed.

"You look better than I thought you would," he said.

Theo was standing by the window. He had finally gone home that morning to shower and change, but he had come straight back with coffee and a bag of the lemon cookies I liked from the bakery near my house. I didn't even know he knew about those cookies.

Mason looked at him and frowned. "Theo. Can you give us a minute?"

Theo didn't move. He looked at me instead. "Callie?"

"It's okay," I said. "I'll be fine."

Theo picked up his coffee and walked to the door. As he passed Mason, he stopped and said something too low for me to hear. Mason's jaw went hard. Then Theo was gone, and the door closed behind him, and it was just the two of us.

Mason pulled the chair away from the bed and sat down. He didn't take my hand. He didn't come close. He sat the way he sat in business meetings, with one leg crossed over the other, like I was a deal he needed to close quickly.

"I know you're upset," he said.

I almost laughed. Upset. Like I had found out he forgot to buy milk.

"You left me there," I said. "You looked right at me, Mason. I saw you look at me. And you turned around and walked away."

"I didn't see you," he said. "It was dark, and it was raining, and Kendra was screaming. I was only thinking aboutgetting her out."

"You looked at me," I said again.

He rubbed his eyes like I was giving him a headache. "Callie, I'm not here to fight. I came because there are things we need to talk about before you go home. The press has been calling. People are asking questions about the crash, about why you were in the car with her. My lawyers think it's best if we keep everything quiet for now."

"Quiet," I said.

"Kendra is very fragile right now," he said. "The doctors said stress isn't good for the baby. She's been crying for three days because she feels like this is all her fault. So I need you to promise me you won't make a scene. No talking to reporters. No calling her. When you get home, we'll sit down and work out what happens next like two adults."

I stared at him. I couldn't believe the words coming out of his mouth. I had broken bones, and stitches in my head, and I had almost died in that car, and he was here to ask me to be quiet so his girlfriend wouldn't feel bad.

"Was any of it real?" I asked.

He looked confused. "Any of what?"

"Our marriage," I said. "Five years. Was any of it real for you? Did you ever love me even a little, or was I just someone to keep the house clean while you lived your real life?"

For the first time, something moved behind his eyes. But it was gone so fast that I wasn't sure I saw it.

"This isn't the time for that conversation," he said.

"It's the only conversation I want to have."

"Callie." He said my name the way you talk to a child who won't go to bed. "You married me knowing what my life was like. You knew I worked. You knew I wasn't the kind of man who brings flowers home every night. I gave you a good life. A big house, nice clothes, everything you could want. I never hurt you."

"You never hurt me," I said slowly.

"Not on purpose," he said. "And I never lied to you."

"You had a baby with another woman."

His face went cold again. "That just happened. It wasn't planned. And I won't let my child grow up without a father, so you need to get used to the idea that Kendra is going to be in my life from now on."

The room went very quiet. I could hear the machine beeping beside me, slow and even. I could hear my own heartbeat.

Three days ago, those words would have broken me into pieces. Three days ago, I would have cried and begged him to tell me what I did wrong, and I would have promised to be better, to be prettier, to be more interesting, anything to make him stay.

But that woman died in the car. I felt her go.

"I want a divorce," I said.

Mason looked at me for a long moment. Then he smiled. It wasn't a kind smile. It was the smile of a man who had heard a joke that wasn't very funny.

"You don't mean that," he said.

"I mean it."

"You're on painkillers, and you're angry, and you're not thinking clearly." He stood up and buttoned his jacket. "When you get home, you'll feel differently. You always do."

"I'm not coming home," I said.

He laughed then, a short, quiet laugh, and walked to the door. He put his hand on the handle and turned back to look at me.

"Where would you go, Callie?" he asked. "Think about it. You have no job. You have no money of your own. Your parents are gone, and every friend you have is my friend first. You gave up your whole life to marry me." He shook his head almost gently. "Without me, you have nothing. You have nobody."

The door opened before I could answer.

Theo was standing in the doorway with my discharge papers in his hand. He looked at Mason, and then he looked at me, and his voice was calm and clear.

"She has me," he said.

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale     She Told Me You'd Be Asleep

Callie's POVI didn't hear my phone ring. It was in the bottom of my work bag, under the new sketchbook, on silent. Jules and I had been working late at the Whitmore Grand, choosing fabric for the chairs, and by the time I saw the missed call, it was almost nine o'clock at night. There was one voicemail. From Diane.I almost didn't play it. Then I pressed the button and held the phone to my ear."Callie, it's me." Her voice was shaking so hard I barely knew it. "Please listen. Don't go home tonight. Don't go to that guest house. I heard her on the phone. Kendra. She told a man called Rafe to come tonight after Theo goes to bed. She said to make it look like an accident." There was a long breath, like she was crying. "I'm so sorry, my girl. I'm so sorry I didn't believe you. Please call me back."I sat down on one of the old restaurant chairs because my legs wouldn't hold me.Jules took the phone out of my hand and listened. When she was done, she put it down on the table very slowly a

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    Get It Yourself

Diane's POVI went back to my son's house the next morning because I couldn't sleep. All night I sat in my kitchen holding a strip of white lace, the lace I had sewn with my own hands for three nights before Callie's wedding. And all night, one question kept going around in my head. How could I have been so blind?Mason's car was gone. He had left for work early. I almost turned around. Then I thought, no. I need to see this girl without my son standing in front of her.Kendra opened the door in a short pink robe, with a cotton pad between each of her toes."Oh," she said. "It's you."She didn't move out of the way, so I walked past her.The house was a mess. I had never seen it like this, not once in five years. Dirty dishes were stacked in the sink and on the counter, with old food dried on them. Shopping bags covered the dining table, at least fifteen of them, some still full, with the tags hanging off clothes she had never worn. Mason's black credit card was lying on top of them.

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    Pink Ink

Callie's POVI don't remember screaming. Theo told me later that I did.All I remember is the box falling out of my hands and the white lace spilling across the doorstep like snow, and then Theo was there, running across the dark garden in his socks. He saw the dress. He saw the card. For a second, his face went so cold and so still that I didn't recognize him. Then he pulled out his phone. "How did this get to her door?" he said into it, very quietly. "You had two men in this house. Two."I could hear a man's voice on the other end, fast and nervous. Theo listened, and his jaw got tighter and tighter. When he hung up, he knelt down in front of me on the cold step."A courier van came at ten forty," he said. "The driver wore a uniform. The label on the box said it was from the Whitmore Grand, so they thought it was work for you. They let him through." He breathed out slowly. "It was the same man from the gray car outside the hotel.""What man?" I whispered. "What gray car?"He looked

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    The Garden Table

Callie's POVTheo came to the Whitmore Grand twenty minutes after I hung up. He walked into the empty restaurant fast, still in his work suit, and he didn't slow down until he could see me."You okay?" he asked."I'm fine," I said. "You didn't have to run.""I didn't run," he said, a little out of breath.Jules looked at him, then at me, then back at him, and hid a smile behind her coffee cup. When we walked out to the front steps, I noticed three men in dark suits standing near the street. One of them was talking to a man in a gray car parked across the road. A second later, the gray car pulled away fast and was gone around the corner."Who are they?" I asked."Hotel security," Theo said, opening the car door for me. "Mrs. Whitmore takes good care of her people."I looked back at the men. One of them nodded at Theo. Just a small nod, the way you nod at your boss."It's your first week," Theo said before I could ask anything else. "You got the biggest job in the city and survived Kend

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale    Theo Is a Superhero

Theo's POVFrom the top floor of the Meridian Tower, the whole city looked small enough to hold in one hand.I had worked in this office for six years. Very few people in the building knew my face. To most of the staff downstairs, I was Mr. Navarro from the president's office, a quiet man in a plain suit who came and went through the side door. The president himself, they said, never came down. Nobody had ever seen him. That was how I wanted it."Hale Ventures stock dropped another nine percent this morning," Owen Reyes said, putting a tablet on my desk. Owen had been my right hand since my father handed me the company. "Their investors heard the Meridian deal is dead. They're nervous.""Good," I said.Owen raised one eyebrow. "You've been waiting a long time to say that."I didn't answer. I looked out the window at the gray sky, and my phone buzzed on the desk. When I saw the name, I picked it up before the first ring finished."Callie.""Hi," she said. Her voice was small and tight.

  • Too Late, Mr. Hale     Not Yet

Callie's POVThe police didn't come for me. Instead, the next morning, a short message came from Margaret.Mediation meeting moved to today. Two o'clock. Mason's lawyers want to settle fast. Wear something that makes you feel tall.I didn't own anything like that anymore. Jules came over with three dresses in a garment bag and made me try every one. We chose a simple dark green dress with long sleeves. When I looked in the mirror, I saw a woman I hadn't seen in a long time."You look like the boss of somebody," Jules said. "Go and be the boss of him."At noon, my phone buzzed. A new number, of course. It was a photo of my old kitchen. Kendra was standing at the stove in my yellow apron, the one with the little lemons on it, holding a wooden spoon and smiling at the camera. Behind her on the counter were six plastic boxes from a Thai restaurant.Making my man lunch in OUR kitchen, the message said. He says it's better than anything you ever made.Jules looked over my shoulder and snort
