Adrian leaned closer to Claire, murmuring something I couldn’t hear. She laughed softly, the sound slicing through me. His hand brushed hers. My jaw clenched.

Savannah noticed. She tilted her head, and a look of calculation flashed through her eyes. “You two seem close,” she said brightly. “It’s so nice to see you happy, Claire.”

“Yes, we are close,” Claire replied. She picked up her fork and resumed eating.

Adrian exerted himself to make polite small talk and Claire relaxed slightly. The atmosphere lightened. Anyone who walked in would think we were a normal, happy group. They’d be wrong.

When Claire excused herself to go to the restroom, I acted on instinct and got up to follow her.

She was already inside when I entered, washing her hands. “Are you following me now?” she said without looking up.

“I need to talk to you.”

“About what? Dinner etiquette?”

“About this,” I said, stepping closer. “You showing up with him.”

She raised her eyebrows. “I beg your pardon?”

I caught her arm.

Ryan snatched the photo back from me, but it was too late.“Where did you get that?” I asked.Micro-expressions flickered across his face. Panic. Calculation. Something darker.I schooled myself to show friendly teasing, with a hint of female indignation. “I hope you’re not cheating on Laura,” I said. “International super-spy or not, you’ll come to regret it. She’s mean. And vengeful.” “What’s this?” Laura asked. “Let me see!” She took the picture and looked at it closely, a thoughtful expression on her face. “She’s not a fashionista, whoever she is,” she said. “The clothes and hairstyle are way out of date.”“It’s an old photo,” Ryan said. He was watching me carefully, measuring my reaction. “You don’t know who she is?”“Me?” I asked. “How would I know who she is? And why are you carrying her picture around if you don’t know who she is?”He searched my face for a beat longer before pocketing the photo. “Just doing a favor for a friend.” Derek, oblivious as ever, clapped his hand

Emma waved a squishy bunny toy. “Look, Mom!” she said. “Nicholas gave it to me!” She yawned delicately, covering her face with her hand.I smiled at the paramedic and thanked him. He finished packing up and waved goodbye. Ethan showed me and Adrian his squishy fish. The children looked rumpled and tearstained, but seemed to have bounced back from their scary experience with the resilience of youth. We started making our slow way back to our parked cars. Rodrigo and Mark were at the rear, looking downcast as Derek berated them. The words “fucking useless” floated up and I cast an irritated glance at my ex-husband. He could at least watch his language around the children. Besides, it wasn’t their fault. Savannah had called them away. Apparently, as Derek’s new girlfriend, she outranked his ex-wife. And needed two bodyguards to feel safe enough to go to the bathroom. I snorted and muttered a low “ow” as pain shot through my throat. Every time I swallowed I felt it. It was bruised and

“Darling,” Savannah said, eyes coyly downcast. “I need to go to the little girl’s room.” “Now?” I asked, glancing at my watch. “Claire and Emma will be out soon.” Her mouth tightened. “Yes,” she said. “I won’t be long.” She placed her hand protectively on her belly and gave me a luminous smile. “Our baby is really active today!” The tension started in my neck and spread down my back. I told myself I was thrilled to start a new family with Savannah, but maybe my body knew something I didn’t. I watched her thread her way through the crowd, still slim and graceful, turning male heads wherever she went. Who wouldn’t want her, right?Adrian was leaning against the railing, eyes casually scanning the area. Looking relaxed and competent, the way he always did.The bastard.“Hey, Adrian,” I said. “Come here for a minute. I want to talk to you.” “The ride’s finishing up now,” he said. “I want to be there when they get out.”“Five minutes,” I said. “Why don’t we go over there, where we can

“Hey! You there! What are you doing!” someone yelled. The angel who saved my life looked like an elderly lady in a pink tracksuit. Her eyes were wide and shocked and she’d dropped her cotton candy to point at us and scream. I’d noticed all this in a split second. My mind was in overdrive, everything slow motion and too bright, looking for some way, any way, out of the mess I was in.My attacker faltered, relaxing his hold. I was able to take a breath and remembered the afternoon Rodrigo and Mark had spent running me through self-defense drills. Dear god, where were they?“If someone gets a garrote around your neck, you’re pretty much dead,” Rodrigo had said. “But if you can, turn to face them, to take the pressure off your throat, and punch them in the groin. Then run like hell.” Lucky for me, my would-be killer was a sadist who stopped to gloat instead of getting down to business. I fell back against my attacker and turned around, clawing at his groin. I found something soft a

I forced myself to stay calm. “If that’s true, then congratulations,” I said. Her smug smile dimmed. She clearly wasn’t getting the reaction she wanted. I moved closer, forcing her back a step. “But if you ever talk about my daughter like that again, I’ll make sure you regret it,” I said. My tone was steady and firm. I impressed myself with how cold and implacable I sounded.Savannah tossed her head. “You don’t get to tell me what to do.”“Watch me,” I said quietly. For a long second, we stared at each other. Then she turned on her heel and walked away, disappearing back into the crowd.I stood there, hands trembling slightly. I took deep breaths until the shaking went away. Then I bought the snacks, did what I set out to do. When I returned to the group, hands full of fried sugar, Adrian took one look at me and raised his eyebrows, silently asking if I was okay. Derek reached out. “Here, let me take those,” he said.“I don’t need your help.” I dodged around him and headed for on

I picked up a slime-making kit with an evil smile. Emma loved slime, and Derek and Savannah could deal with the mess. It had glitter in it. I showed it to Laura, who responded with an identical evil smile and a thumbs-up. When she heard I was going to the amusement park with Derek and Emma tomorrow, she’d insisted we go shopping for toys. Nothing extravagant, just fun little surprises I could bring my daughter to show her I was thinking of her. Browsing the sticker aisle, my mind drifted back to the scene with Savannah and that strange man earlier. Something very strange was going on there. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I’d be willing to bet money that he wasn’t a random stranger. Their body language was too intimate. Laura nudged me with her elbow and held up a stuffed rabbit with ears as long as her forearm. Its long, silky fur was pink shading to purple. I smiled and nodded. That man was giving me serious danger vibes, but Savannah’s life wasn’t my problem. I wasn’t go
