I eyed Laura nervously.

Derek’s sister and I had never gotten along. She wasn’t exactly cruel, but she had a tendency to look off into the distance when she had to talk to me, and avoided me the rest of the time. I always got the impression she thought our marriage was a total mistake.

Had to agree with her there.

“Hey,” she said. “I brought you some water.”

“Um… Thanks.”

“I haven’t poisoned it or anything.”

“I didn’t say that!” I said, although the thought had briefly crossed my mind.

“Please open the door, sweetie,” I said, desperately hoping she hadn’t done anything drastic.Silence. “I have a key, you know.” I said. “I don’t want to use it, but I will if I have to. Just let me see that you’re okay and I’ll leave you alone.” All the while I was talking I was mentally kicking myself. Savannah had told me about her and Victor and Santorini while we were locked up in that warehouse. The city had a special meaning for them. I’d forgotten all about it… then thoughtlessly blurted it out at the worst possible moment. “I’m sorry I mentioned it. You know—that place. I never meant to make you feel bad. I didn’t even remember you told me about it. It’s a gorgeous city. Anybody would want pictures of it on their wall.”“Oh, stop babbling.” Savannah was standing in the doorway. Her hair was a bird’s nest and she looked like she’d been crying. “Savvie!” I threw my arms around her, practically crying myself. “Let me go.” She wriggled away irritably. “You’ve seen me. I’m f

“Sav?” I knocked on the door. “Savannah? How are you doing, sweetie? I brought you coffee.”She opened the door in her robe, bunny slippers on her feet. “Can I come in?” I didn’t actually wait for an invitation, just handed her the coffee and nudged my way in while she was distracted. I’d learned that move from Laura.I looked around as unobtrusively as possible. Savannah’s hair was brushed, but she wasn’t wearing any makeup. I don’t think I’d ever seen her without makeup before. She liked to wear a little bit, even at home. The cottage was clean and neat. There weren’t even any dirty dishes in the sink. I didn’t know if that was because Savannah was good about cleaning up, or if she just wasn’t eating. She’d be losing weight naturally right now anyway, so it was hard to tell. I tried to make sure she ate at least one meal a day with us. She stood near the door, sipping her coffee. “You want to check the bathroom?” she asked. “Maybe I’ve got drugs in there.” “What? Of course not!”

I cleaned up the pastry crumbs and considered the problem. What could I do to help my sister? She’d never listened to me. I washed the dishes and decided the only thing I could do was be there for her. Give her a safe, quiet place to heal. I sent her a quick text telling her I was going out. She had a key if she wanted to come in and watch TV or anything. ***I looked around the strip mall, trying to find the place Ryan had recommended. “Don’t expect to get a black belt or a trophy. She’ll teach you how to survive. You’re pretty tall for a girl, but you’re still at a big disadvantage fighting a guy. You don’t want fancy katas. You want to inflict maximum damage, run away, and live to fight another day.”I’d stared at him. The teacher must be impressive. That was the most words I’d ever heard come out of his mouth. Found it. It was a small door with a sign on it saying Personal Safety Classes. I walked in and looked around nervously. It smelled like a gym—rubber mats, old sweat,

“Hello hello hello!” Laura caroled. She barged past me into the house, handing over the bag of pastries without turning her head. “I want to see what they did.”Behind her followed Ryan, carrying a container of drinks. At least he nodded politely before giving them to me. “There’s an Earl Grey matcha latte there for Savannah,” he said.“Where’s the tiny house?” Laura said. “In the back yard, right?” She darted towards the French doors, but I got in front of her before she could open them.“Not a good idea,” I said. “We usually wait for her to come out. Savannah is not a morning person.”“The latte should fetch her out,” Ryan said. “I texted her before we came over.”“Then we can wait,” I said. I put the drinks on the kitchen table and dug out a plate for the pastries. “We can sit down, eat this lovely food, drink our delicious coffee, and you can tell me what’s been going on with you two. The last I heard, you guys were broken up.” “Yeah,” Laura said. They glanced at each other, and

“Mommy, look at it!” Emma said. Her voice would never be melodious, but she seemed to be quacking less than usual. “It’s beautiful… just like you, Auntie Sav.” She looked at me, her eyes shining. Little suck-up. I couldn’t help smiling nonetheless. Maybe it was just me, but both of the children seemed to have become significantly less annoying over the past week. They were making an effort to be nice to me, for one thing. When we were in New York Emma had taken my hand, looked me dead in the eyes and lisped, “Thank you for saving my mommy, Auntie Savannah.” Sickening. The place was nice, though, I had to admit. It was small, but the vaulted ceilings and skylights gave it a feeling of light and space and air. The front door opened onto the living room area. Plush gray linen sofa opposite a small freestanding fireplace. Hardwood floors. Cream-painted walls. There was a kitchenette to one side, featuring cabinets and appliances in matching cream, and an island with two barstools. “Lo

“She wouldn’t even let me fly them out on the company jet!” Derek said. The corners of his mouth turned down in a fetching little pout. “They went commercial. Commercial!”We were hanging out at my house after seeing them off at the airport. Well, watching from a distance as their plane took off. “That doesn’t sound like Savannah,” I replied. “She definitely likes the luxuries.” “Not enough to put up with me anymore, apparently.” He sighed and dropped his head dramatically onto his hands. A curl of hair flopped over onto his forehead. I patted him on the shoulder in a strictly platonic manner. “She’s having a tough time right now. Not only is she grieving for the baby, her body’s going through all sorts of hormonal upheavals.” At the sound of the word “baby,” Derek’s shoulders hunched. I immediately felt bad for bringing it up. He played it off, but Derek was grieving too. Add in the bruised ego from Claire’s rejection, and the man was suffering.“Claire told me she wants Savanna

“What am I doing?!” I thought to myself, heart pounding. “He’s the superspy, not you!” I hunched down in my seat, trying to hide my face. I probably looked like an idiot. I imagined what Derek would say if he could see me now. The way he’d roll his eyes. “There she goes again, jumping in without t

I yanked open the front door. “Savannah,” I said. “Claire.” Her hair was mussed and her eyes were sparkling with rage. In the morning light, she was incandescently beautiful. “What do you want?” I was done being gracious, especially with her.“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” she said, moving f
