I didn’t realize I was holding my breath until after I’d slammed the door shut. The aftershocks seemed to vibrate through my apartment, and through my body, too. My lips still tingled from Derek’s kiss. His passionate, desperate kiss that I definitely did not ask for and certainly didn’t want.

“Are you sure about that?” whispered a voice deep in my heart.

My mind, and my body, kept replaying the scene. His violent embrace, the feverish intensity of his kiss.

What did he think he was doing?

“Are you going to arrest me?” I asked, my heart pounding. “Should I arrest you?” Detective Lowinsky said. His voice was cool and dry. He’d always been very sympathetic before, but back then I was the victim. Not the perpetrator. I gulped and looked at him anxiously. He relented. “No, I’m not going to arrest you. Not right now, anyway. However, I would like you to follow me to headquarters so I can get your statement.” He slapped the roof of my car and addressed my watcher, “Move ‘em out, Nelson.”“Sir yessir,” the patrolman replied. “Smartass,” Lowinsky muttered.I caravaned down to the station, sandwiched between police cars.My palms were sweaty on the steering wheel, and I wondered how the children were doing. Where was Derek bringing them? Could Savannah babysit? Did she have plans? She never had plans anymore. I was getting really worried about her. Having a job was helping, but she seemed to be withdrawing further and further into herself…I took a deep breath and forcibly s

I sat on the side of the road, trying to pull myself together. The truck driver had blocked the lane with traffic cones and was directing people around the accident. What a nice, competent man he was.And I’d turned him into a killer. I shivered in the sunlight, and glanced at my car again to make sure the kids were okay. Emma waved at me. She didn’t seem too upset, but it could be hard to tell with children. Maybe I should go join them. It must be scary for a child, being alone after that traumatic experience. God alone knew how Ethan was feeling. On the other hand, when the cops came I didn’t want to look like I was trying to flee the scene. What kind of crime had I just committed? I’d killed a man. It was probably involuntary manslaughter or something, at least. There was nothing else for it. I needed help.I took out my phone and called Derek. “Hello?” He sounded subdued and cautious. Kind of reserved. Sad, even. Not at all the temper tantrum I’d been expecting. He couldn’t

“Mom! Mom, guess what?!” Emma raced across the parking lot, her backpack bouncing and her cheeks pink with excitement. Ethan walked a few steps behind her, his hands buried deep in his jacket pocket. He was growing like a weed. I’d have to buy him new clothes soon. He was still a reserved and introverted little boy, but there was a new confidence in the way he moved that warmed my heart.“Slow down, sweetie.” I laughed, crouching down to hug my daughter before catching Ethan’s eye and giving him a big smile. “How were rehearsals?”“Amazing!” She did a little dance of joy, twirling in the parking lot. “And Isabella was there too! She got her costume today,” she signed.“That’s wonderful!” I said. Ethan caught up with us and I touched his shoulder. “And how’s our budding prop master? I heard they loved your Ghost of Christmas Future so much they’re having you design all the ghosts’ costumes.”Ethan ducked his head, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Yeah. I’m helping p

I looked up at Victor’s face. His eyes were dark and full of a pain that mirrored my own. Michael’s death had hurt him terribly. It wasn’t just the death of the son he’d loved. The loss of the family he’d dreamed about ever since he was a little boy and his father had abandoned him and his mother. He’d built his identity on being smart and tough and able to protect himself and his people. Now that bedrock was gone and he was flailing, frantically trying to fix it.I reached up and touched the muscle twitching at the corner of his mouth. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. He closed his eyes. Our shared grief closed the last remaining distance between us. I didn’t think. I just wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him down to me. He let out a low growl and crushed me against him with a ferocity that squeezed the air out of my lungs. His mouth pressed against mine with a desperate hunger. His hands slid from my shoulders to my waist, pressing me against the wall. I pulled him closer,

  • Too Late To Apologize, Mr. CEO   Chapter 153 - Savannah’s POV

Still sobbing, I ran for my cottage, Victor yelling behind me. I made it through my front door just seconds ahead of him, slamming it behind me and locking it. The image of Claire and Victor still hung in front of my eyes, like it was burned into my retinas. My tears didn’t blur it at all.“Savannah, open the damned door!” Victor’s fist slammed against the heavy oak. “Don’t do this! It’s not what you think!” “Go to hell!” I screamed. I pulled down my largest suitcase and started throwing clothes into it, just shoving in the first things that came to hand. I didn’t care if they got wrinkled. I just wanted to get out as soon as I could.Leave my sister and my boyfriend to their romantic bliss. How could Claire do this to me? After everything we’d been through! I’d taken a kick meant for her, and it had cost me my son, my future, and my mental health. I’d bled out onto a cold concrete floor to keep her safe, and this was how she repaid me? By taking the only man I’d ever truly loved

I wiped the tears of laughter from my eyes. “Derek’s been driving himself crazy, wondering who you are,” I told Victor. “He’s sooo jealous.” Claire rolled her eyes. “He followed us to the prison the last time we went to see Adrian.” I started laughing again. “I didn’t know he’d gone that far.” “So that’s who that was,” Victor said. “What I want to know is how he knew we were going. Does he have people on you or something?” He looked at Claire. She shrugged. “They’d have to be really good. I haven’t seen anybody, and I pay attention nowadays. Plus I’m pretty sure Ethan would spot them right off.”“Oh, it’s simpler than that,” I said. “He put a backdoor in your security system.”“He did what?!” Claire snarled. I looked at her respectfully. I didn’t know if she realized it, but she’d moved into a fight-ready stance. Weight balanced, knees slightly bent, hands at waist level. Her eyes blazed with fury. She looked completely different from the sweet little mouse Derek had married al

I walked back into the ballroom, ignoring the music and the high society donors in their best formal wear. I was looking for a waiter. Spotting one across the room and heading over, I nabbed a glass of champagne and gulped it down. The next glass received the same treatment. Then I picked up a glas

I put my phone down with a loud click. Claire still had me blocked. I’d tried everything. I’d sent a series of increasingly desperate text messages that went undelivered. I’d voicemailed until I could barely talk. No reply. I’d even resorted to that ancient technology, a handwritten letter. It had

I yanked open the front door. “Savannah,” I said. “Claire.” Her hair was mussed and her eyes were sparkling with rage. In the morning light, she was incandescently beautiful. “What do you want?” I was done being gracious, especially with her.“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” she said, moving f

I tugged at my arm, but my harasser had a good strong grip.“Be patient, babe,” he muttered. “Got a nice truck. Crew cab. Plenty of room in the back seat.” He leered at me.I whimpered. For some reason, I couldn’t get it together to scream. Fight back. Anything. I was too groggy and weak. It was al
