Chapter 4

Author: Lingering Dream
After I was discharged, I applied to start the closed‑door training program early and turned in my phone.

Once I finished packing, there was only one thing left on the table. It was a paper bag with James's name written on it.

On Saturday afternoon, I went to the office to finish my resignation paperwork. By evening, I returned to the apartment for the final inspection. The elevator doors opened, and James came rushing out. He looked around the empty apartment, his expression darkening.

"What's this about you quitting?"

I looked at him. "It means exactly what it says."

He stepped closer.

"The livestream wedding was just for the show. Once today is over, all of this ends."

I stared at him. "You've been saying that for five years."

He fell silent.

Right then, his phone rang. Zara's name lit up the screen. She was calling to hurry him along.

After it rang three times, he finally answered. Her voice came through, frantic. "James, where are you?

"The livestream is about to start. If you don't come, it's all over."

I stood there, watching him hold the phone in silence for several seconds.

Then he said, "I'm on my way."

He hung up and looked at me. "Don't leave yet. Wait until I get back. We'll talk then."

I did not answer.

His eyes drifted toward the paper bag in the room, as if he wanted to take it with him, or maybe leave it behind. In the end, he turned and stepped back into the elevator.

Just before the doors closed, he called out, "Yvonne, today really matters.

"Wait for me. Just this once."

At eight that night, I got into a car headed for the airport.

Before turning in my phone, I checked the trending searches one last time.

Zara was standing onstage in a wedding dress, smiling as she announced that the so‑called Hundredth Challenge was not actually a wedding. It was simply the grand finale of the five‑year couple challenge they had been doing all this time.

The livestream chat instantly flooded with congratulations.

However, not long after, the host pulled out a document.

"During a recent advertising compliance review, our sponsor requested that both of you sign a statement confirming the authenticity of your relationship."

The host looked between them.

"So, I need to confirm something. Are you two actually a couple in real life?"

The camera cut to James.

Zara grabbed his hand, her eyes red. "We've made it all the way to the final step. Don't let five years of effort go to waste."

The audience waited. The camera zoomed in, and the host held out a pen.

The answer had actually been there for a long time.

A few seconds later, James took the pen and signed his name.

The livestream erupted in cheers.

I locked my phone and handed it to the training coordinator. I never looked back.

Meanwhile, during a break in the livestream, the company head hurried over to James.

"Why haven't you approved Yvonne's resignation yet?

"She finished all her paperwork today. The new project team is leaving tonight."

James's face changed instantly. "What did you say?"

"You didn't know she quit?" The head frowned. "She's starting the closed‑door training early. Her flight is tonight. She should be boarding soon."

The moment he finished speaking, James turned and ran.

He was halfway to the airport when he suddenly remembered the paper bag was still in his car.

He tore it open and looked inside.

After reading what was in it, he called me over and over like a man losing his mind.

Before Hank and I got married, we never filmed any couple challenges or made a list of a hundred things we had to do.We only did three simple things together. We picked a wedding date, invited the people who truly mattered to us, and announced our marriage at both of our companies. The day we made the announcement, many coworkers came to congratulate us.Hank even asked me, "Do you want to keep the announcement limited to a smaller group?"He knew I still had some scars from everything that had happened when I made my relationship public. He also knew that just because I said I had moved on did not mean every trace of the past would disappear.I thought about it for a moment, then shook my head."No."If we're getting married, then we should tell everyone openly."He nodded and handed me the list of people who would receive the announcement. He did not make the decision for me. He did not hide me behind those three words, "I'm doing this for you."During the wedding prepara

A year later, I returned to my old city for the company's annual conference. This time, I came back as the head of the new project team and one of the conference's main speakers. Before I went onstage, my assistant straightened my materials and smiled."Ms. Wheeler, a lot of people out there are waiting to hear your case study."I took the microphone and nodded. When I stepped into the spotlight, I saw plenty of familiar faces in the front rows.I saw James. He was sitting off to the right. His name badge read Project Consultant. He was no longer the Mr. Porter everyone used to crowd around. My eyes rested on him for only a second before moving on.The presentation went smoothly. I talked about rebuilding a brand, communicating with users, and the challenges of launching a project in a new location, along with the adjustments we had made along the way.The audience applauded several times. When I finished, the host smiled."Ms. Wheeler, we hope you'll come back to headquarte

When we reached the hospital, Hank pulled into a parking spot."I'll wait for you here.""It might take a while," I said softly."That's okay."By the time I finished my examination and came back out, it was almost two in the afternoon. Hank was leaning against the car, holding a cup of hot soup."The line at the doctor's office was pretty long. Drink something first."I stared at him. "How did you know I hadn't eaten?""You only drank half a cup of coffee at the morning meeting." He handed me the soup. "You had the tests done on an empty stomach. Your stomach's probably feeling awful."For a moment, I did not say anything. I lowered my head and took the cup from him.Warm steam brushed my face, and my eyes suddenly stung. The more time I spent around him, the more I realized that this was simply who Hank was. When I worked late into the night, he left the last light in the hallway on. However, he never texted me to hurry up.When I was in a bad mood, he only asked, "Want t

The head of the company's internal investigation team looked up at her."Ms. Charlton, we've already pulled the records for the original drafts."The final versions of the scripts were completed after Yvonne submitted her proposals."Zara's lips moved, but no words came out.James lifted his head."A lot of the content came from Yvonne."She never gave us permission to turn our private relationship into promotional material for the couple account."Once those words were out, there was no way to contain the situation anymore. That same day, the company issued an internal disciplinary notice. James was removed from his position as director and demoted to an ordinary project consultant. All operating rights for the account were revoked.Zara's eligibility for company partnerships was suspended pending further investigation.Neither of them blamed the other, and neither felt the need to post a long statement trying to clear their name. The account that had once gained millions

After James left the account, Zara still tried to keep it going. She continued posting breakfast photos, bouquets, and gym selfies as if nothing had changed. Even her captions stayed the same.[We've both been busy lately, but the love is still there.]The comments, however, were not buying it.[Where's James?][Why haven't you two appeared together since the livestream wedding?][What exactly was the hundredth couple challenge?][Weren't you supposed to have a fresh start?]Zara started a livestream. On camera, she wore a white sweater, her eyes slightly red."Everyone, please don't overthink it. We've just been really busy with work."The comments flew across the screen.[Then let James come out and say something.][Didn't you two announce your marriage?][You're so busy you can't even appear together once?]Zara gripped her water glass so tightly her knuckles turned white."He's not available to be on camera."The moment she finished speaking, a link suddenly flooded

There were only three things inside. There was a photo of James and me from five years ago, a key to the apartment, and a hospital report.James stared at those few lines on the report. His whole body went rigid. That day, in the pouring rain, I had fallen into the mud. He had shielded Zara as she got into the car.He had thought the only thing I had lost that day was a cake. He had been wrong.By the time he reached the airport, boarding for my flight had already closed. He rushed to the counter, his voice falling apart."Has Yvonne already gone through?"The airport employee could only repeat the same thing."I'm sorry, sir. We can't disclose passenger information."He ran to the security checkpoint, but the guards stopped him. Then Joyce came back out from the other side. She looked as if she had known all along that he would come. She handed him an old notebook."Yvonne asked me to give this to you."James opened it. Pages one through ninety‑nine were filled with dates.
